The things is..........................what is the point of having 'knowledge' these days anyway? Maybe the future is just 'outsourcing' it to Google and Wikipedia.

So that does leave more 'space' in the brain for other more important thoughts perhaps.

Another example is SatNav - now I don't have to clutter my head with directions etc - and I can think some more sublime thoughts instead.

PS Gav darling - please can you post a reply to this. Thanks.

Nah, I think it's just a description of normal welcoming policy in Tesco's at Waltham Abbey.

I tell you what. If you really want an answer to that, park in a parent and child space at my local Tesco's and you will have your answer.

If you knew me, you wouldn't need me to clarify.

And now, the Bible itself has been translated into SMS.

Wrk hard at wateva u do. U will soon go 2 da wrld of da dead, where no 1 wrks or thinks or reasons or knws NEting. (Ecclesiastes, chapter nine, verse 10).

Apparently to send all of it by SMS would take 30,000 messages.
SMS is not something old farts "can't understand". It's just a means of communication that takes longer to comprehend than ordinary english. That's because it is far more reliant on context than ordinary language, which involves a different part of the brain. The one that decodes type is more closely related to the visual processing centres, whereas the bit that can decode context is on the other end of the brain.

Since the object of sending an SMS message is to communicate something, txt spk should be used only when it is going to help to keep the message length down.

I know what you mean, and I apologise.

The reason I sometimes do it is because the damage done to the inside lane by HGVs is often so substantial that driving in that lane can shake your fillings loose. So address your complaints to the Dept of Transport, Jam making and T-shirt Logos, or whatever it's called now.

    Txt spk.

Why can't they use the proper spelling and punctuation?
I really don't understand this. Modern phones will produce correctly spelled words with minimal input, so why send incomprehensible abbreviations?

    "earlier accident"

The traffic reports keep talking about an "earlier accident". Of course it was earlier, calling it so adds nothing to the traffic report and just annoys me when I'm stuck in the queue of non-moving traffic.
You should not complain about this. The traffic reporters are among the few people in this world who are actually involved in future-proofing.
When the technology becomes available to predict an accident and resultant delay on a particular road, the reporters will not have to change anything to report this prediction. A major advance...?

I'm complaining about the use of the word "earlier" all accidents are "earlier" the word is totally redundant.

But I do like the way timbp is thinking

We seem to have a woman on the Grumpy Old Man's Thread. She can stay, but only if she wears American Tan stockings and suspenders and a WAAF uniform

Sorry, it's a Grumpy Old Female soap addict thing.

And you're taking your time getting into the uniform. Would you like some help straightening your seams?
