I've just checked the "Luminous Frog" website and as yet there are no photos of Southport this September. Does anyone know when they'll appear? Ta.

Fancy dress: Parade system didn't work well. Judges on inside, audience on outside, too many people, too much time, audience can't see who's being picked, etc. Not sure how to fix that. Possibly pick finalists during social dancing before cabaret? Finalists were all excellent. I'd have preferred finalists to have been judged individually.
Anniversaries, engagements, yada, yada, yada: does nothing for me.
    Buttons: meh.

Just watched DVD fanastic watching the cabarets again, excellent editing!

RE Fancy dress you can see they have been asked several times to walk on round but they just stand there in the parade, so that doesnt help the public watching when they dont move. As for seeing whose picked thats always been hard until the short list has been chosen.
The fantastic success of the fancy dress means lots of people enter!
as for picking during freestyle that wont work as not everyone comes dressed until the cabaret?

what do you want from a Cabaret?

    whats "meh"?

    Roll on February 2008!!

Re: Southport Sept07 - The Aftermath

This thread reminded me of something I wanted to mention re: Southport DVDs which is that I think they should feature more clips of social dancing. I watched a DVD of my first weekender recently (Camber Nov 2005) and there was 25 mins or so of social dancing filmed and played on there. Okay, some (a lot) of it was a bit cringeworthy but I bet the people featured don't see it like that. Adding more social dancing footage shouldn't need major editing, may encourage more people to purchase a DVD and shouldn't add much expense to the whole venture (except the song royalties I guess and I have to admit I do not know how much those would be - anyone?)

    What about it Johnah/Wes?

    I totally agree.
Some of my most inspirational moments at Southport weekenders have come from watching people freestyling... it would be fantastic to capture some of that magic on camera.
I know we have snippets on the recent DVDs but a) they're quite short and b) I get the impression people see they are being filmed and think "do something quick!", so rather than just freestyle you get a couple of moves and then a pose and smile at the camera...

Southport offers lots of fantastic teaching, which is captured on the DVD , and lots of fantastic freestyle - why not have some of that shown on the DVD too?

Got to say Im quite surprised how long its taking to get the DVDs to people. Thats over 2 months after the event.
I know there was a whole thread on the subject but I must confess I didnt read it all. What was the eventual reason for the time delay?
Im sure there will be a good reason but I did a search for "DVD" but couldn't see a thread.

That's what I was thinking. I got my DVD through last week, even though it was the June one we were waiting for and they sent through the September one by mistake.

I had a look at it anyway. It's the first DVD of a weekend I've ever seen and I thought it would be a couple of hours of social dancing, showing all the best bits, funny bits, etc. The social dancing that was on show, didn't even have the original sound on it. It showed everyone dancing to music that had been added later, so it just looked crap.

I'm not interested in watching the classes, I wanted to see everyone having fun and seeing how many people I recognised. I won't be buying any more.

The first time I ever saw a weekender DVD (Franco's Camber)All it showed was 5-10minutes of bit of the freestyle after the Cabaret and to be honest, that was the only bit I really enjoyed about it, so i've never bought another DVD, of any of the weekends i've been on, based soley on that, i'm afraid!

I'd probably change my mind if I knew it captured a bit more of the 'social fun side' of the weekend.

It's certainly the right problem to be having.

If a shortlist was picked during freestyle before the cabaret then folks would come dressed for the freestyle before the cabaret.

As a leader who did some of the classes, I find having them on the DVD is a helpful memory-aid.

..but I want this too. The 1st thing I did when the DVD arrived was look at the freestyle sections.

I don't disagree with "more freestyle" but I'd buy a DVD for the classes. Even watching freestyle I might just watch to see people do moves I like so I can try and copy them.
