    Train to Southport question.

Has anyone got the train to Southport before? I'm trying to decide whether to drive up or take the train. It's £38 return which isn't much difference to the petrol costs. My only concern is I have an awful lot of luggage to take, there is a change at Wigan, with a walk to a different station. Anyone know realistically how far it is between the two?

You definately need to find out the facts because I vaguely remember Spin Dryer posting once that the nearest train station to Pontins is Ainsdale, NOT Southport.

Yeah. Nearest train is Ainsdale. That's about a mile from the venue.

I've done it – the change of station at Wigan is literally across the road.

Change at Southport to get the train to Ainsdale, and it's a 10 minute walk down the road.

Do you want your shoes returned? I guess not if you don't remember who you left them with.

Yup. As I recall: walk out of the station, turn right and cross the road (remember to check for traffic ) and walk about 50 meters or so. You can see the other station from the first.

A good job is never rushed...

October is traditionally arse waxing month - so we're aiming to get it done then!

    Re: Train to Southport question.

We always get the train to Southport (Ainsdale) to avoid the pain of the motorways (only did it once - never again).

I am pretty sure that our train from London Euston went through Rugby - in any case it ended up at Liverpool Lime street. You then change to Liverpool Central which is only about 300 metres from Lime street. You get the train out to Ainsdale (service every 15 minutes).

The walk from Ainsdale to Pontins is the major pain of this bit but you might be able to phone a friend and get a lift.

Commis Chef manages to do the whole weekend on the contents of a suitcase half the size of mine. The first time we went by train her case was huge and heavy. It is amazing what you find you don't need after it has been tearing your arm from your shoulder for a mile of walking.

    I Hope this helps.

this is the bit of my train trip that I am most worried about - but you have given me a nifty idea - assuming that people I know have arrived, have their phones on them and are getting reception actually on second thoughts I'll be walking!

There's a big assumption in there Chef though I guess the use of the word 'might' just about covers you

A section of the line in the Liverpool direction is closed Friday and Saturday, for engineering.

So via Wigan / Southport may be a better bet this particular time.

The entire line is closed Sunday.

There will be replacement buses but they're not always ideal if you've lots of luggage, and they can slow the journey down.
