Re: "When I were a lad / lass..."

This thread reminds me of a sketch. I thought it was The Frost Report one with Ronnie Corbett, Barker and John Cleese, but it's not that one.

Can someone please tell me what sketch I am thinking about.

Re: "When I were a lad / lass..."

It's got me thinking about other things my parents use to let me do, my dad was a Irish navvy who work the roads never claimed the dole and made sure the bills were paid and what was left over went in the pub, where us kids use to pop in when he was nice and merry and get 10 bob note off to spend on sweets. My mum use to work part time when I was ten in the evenings and leave me to look after the little ones for 3 hours in the evening, and the neighbours were told to keep a eye out for us, and I did that for four years and I did it for other neighbours and there was never any problems, but then in those days we knew no difference, and by the way I had irish dancing lessons and later ballroom dance class, so I did not have a deprave childhood.

That's probably understandable; the real dangers didn't begin until midnight.

Re: "When I were a lad / lass..."

I remember sitting parked in the pub car park with pop and crisps and the dog - no siblings.

This would be on the way to Grandma's house - and there were frequent pub stops.

People thought nothing of drinking and driving then.

At home, locally, I was allowed inside the pubs as my Dad was a good customer! In fact he used to take me on pub crawls especially at Christmas. The dinner would be well burnt by the time we rolled in.

This would be before I was 10 when he went on the wagon.

I remember being bought loads of drinks and Milky Ways by the boozy men.

We lived in a village and I would be gone all day, up in the woods, down by the river, in the playing field..... I must say, I was the only girl in a gang of boys allowed to "rake about".

The other girls in our village were not allowed my freedoms. I think I was such an obnoxious child, my mother was glad to be rid of me. Sometimes it does pay....

Re: "When I were a lad / lass..."

I was just thinking that the only time I was left alone when I was younger, was when my lovely grandfather was taking me for a walk when I was about 3or 4.

He decided to nip into the Bookies and left me outside. I started to bawl my eyes out and he had to bribe me with hundreds of sweets so I wouldn't tell my mother or grandmother what happened.

I told them this story a few months ago, thinking that since about 30 years had passed it wouldn't matter anymore. My grandmother still went mental at him!

Sadly, he became ill during Summer this year and died on my birthday. These little memories of him are pure gold.
