Just had this email from a friend:
Hi Brian,
Just heard about this to day from the Lindy Hop people in Edinburgh,
that Marco's is closing in December for redevelopment, they were
trying to book the hall for advanced dates and were told that the
venue was bought by a property development company because of its
prime site location in Edinburgh, apparently when they rebuild on the
new site Marco's will have all of the first floor but the development
won't be completed until 2010.
Any thoughts on it?

Dug around on the Edinburgh council web site and found this page...
From there, I found application "07/00739/FUL", for a "Mix use development of primarily commercially managed student housing that will run as an apart-hotel in non term-time, with leisure facility including cafe and business use offices".
It's not clear whether planning consent has been given for this proposal, but if it has gone through, then yeah, it looks like Marco's is in for some big changes...

The redevelopment value of Marco's has been of interest to the owner for years. I used to work for the company that valued it every 2-3 years. It seems he has finally bitten the bullet.....
Any update on when and where the move from Marco's will be?

The new venue is to be The Edinburgh Masonic Club, Shrub Place, off Leith Walk...
The first class to be held there will be on Tuesday 29th January.
That means that the last event at Marcos will be the end of month party on the 26th...end of an era ( IMHO). I have to say that somewhere with a bit more character will be very welcome but as I haven't been in the new place I shall reserve judgement...
I went to the website which was rubbish and didn't really offer anything in the way of showing me what the venue looked like (though did have a whole heap of hideous scrolling things). I look forward to going there and giving it a go.
I won't be able to make the 26th .
The place looks rather nice, though I would imagine some people will be put of by the word "Masonic".
Won't be able to make the last Marco's event, but I hope the farewell party goes well.

This page not give an idea?

It's quite a nice venue but I don't recall that it has the level of airconditioning and fans that Marcos has.
No, but there will have to be extra teaching on how to do the Right Hand to Right Hand hold, and progression to the Intermediate Level will be more strictly controlled for Ceroc Apprentices.
Having a look at this site, some of the signs look scarily like Ceroc signals!

Shame about Marco's.
Very much in two minds about the new place - for entirely personal reasons. On the one hand, the venue is on the right side of town for me now - might mean I make it along midweek more often. Flip side is that I lose that 35minute cooldown walk afterwards.

The information was posted by an organisation with a vested interest in doing away with "secret" societies like the masons. (This is kind of off-topic, though, so if anyone wants to start a big debate on the merits or otherwise of masonic societies, be my guest - or rather be Franck's guest, it's his forum!)
No, I wasn't looking to start a big debate - it just seemed odd to me. As far as I'm concerned this thread is welcome to return to the topic it was on before I pitched my tuppence-worth in.
