    USB Device Not Recognized

One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.

The device is a Logitech mouse, just a basic one, no model name or anything on the mouse or USB Received. Plugged my mouse in the other day, and got that message, haven't installed anything or done anything differently. Other mice work, used all the ports, iPod works fine, so I really don't know whats wrong?

I've seen a few forums saying reinstall Windows, but I assume that that is riddiculus and that it would only be a problem with the actual USB stick.

    Can anyone help me please?

    Thanks,

    Freddie.

    Buy a new mouse?

Does it work on other computers?

Remove the driver and re-install it.

    Baseball bat.

Is an expensive option, but very therapeutic.

And if your computer has more than one USB port, do you get the same problem with other ports?
I had major problems with all my USB devices, and reinstalled drivers etc, until it occurred to me they were all plugged into a single USB hub. When I connected that hub to a different PC port, all problems vanished. Well, almost all problems. I was stupid enough to plug a backup hard drive into the other USB port -- sparks and dead hard drive. I think I'm lucky the devices that were previously on the hub on that port are still working.

Are you sure that the drive is dead? Quite often external hard drives are merely internal hard drives with an USB interface, especially in the older models. The interface can fry but leave the drive completely unharmed. It can often be removed and used as an internal drive. I have picked up CD and DVD rewriters at car boot sales for £1 and £2 that the sellers thought were useless but enjoyed an afterlife as internal drives.

Ok, I'm pretty sure that it's the USB receiver, it works very occasionally. I stated in my first post that I'd tried each and every port.

Can anyone recommend a good mouse?

Bearing in mind that I'm left handed, and also a student...

I own a couple of Logitech MX 310's – they're just about perfect IMHO.

Unfortunately it seems to have been discontinued, but there's lots of other Logitech mice here...
