    Re: Unique Names

Have you heard what Jordan and Peter have called their new baby?

Princess Tiammi! I like the Tiammi bit but the princess is taking it too far....

I knew two girls who were called Vogue and Cartier!

I ask you! The names Parents come up with!

I am called Rebecca but prefer to be called Becky although i do not spell it that way

    I spell Becky

    B E C C I

i liked the unusual and indvidual way of spelling it but recently after coming across peoples bebo pages i have noticed that they're are quite a few "Becci's"!

funny thing is that our Alix is not up there in the "helper category" and Dunc's as blonde as the come....

    Re: Unique Names

distorted spellings of perfectly good names for no good reason gets to me.

My father created a spelling for my name as he had an intense dislike for the traditional shortening of my name - have spent the best part of my life correcting people's spelling of it.

Oh an due to my fathers compulsive correction of anyone calling me by the abbreviation of my name - I can't stand being called by it to this day

I went to school with a moonbeam and a sunset some parents are so cruel

I once taught a Jade Green, and a "Precious" who was the eighth child and the first female offspring.

I'm constantly correcting the spelling of my names too, though due to my family's European heritage, rather than a parental spelling quirk.

    Not very amusing answers, really....

But on Norwegian telly one of the weather ladies is called 'VÃ¥r Staude', which translates as 'Spring Perennial'. Apparently all her sister have flower names....

    Re: Unique Names

5 and 1/2 weeks early, we've just given birth to "No Name" Mitchell-Thain, all 4 1/2 lbs of her.

Mum well, but the name thing is a curious one.

3 main opions are: Verity, Talulla and Jahanara, all of which have meanings imortant to us.
Middle name options include: hope, grace, angel and my personal unfave, Pheonix.

    Shall get back to you...

How do you know what's the 'correct' spelling of a name, though? Every name will have numerous variations (in different countries etc). My name always gets spelled wrong, as there's just so many ways of spelling it. The most common variations I've come across over here, are: Catherine, Catheryn, Katherine, Kathryn, Kathrine, Catharine etc. But there's lots more to choose from:

In fact, I was named after my mother, who's called Trine, which is a short form of Cathrine (or Katrine, or whatever).

Oh, and it means 'pure', is originally Greek, and can also be a boy's name.

Indeed, my sisters name is pronounced "Cath-leen" but is spelt Caitlin (a gaelic name of course) - so generally she gets the wrong spelling

Almost certainly a consequence of illiterate parents, don't you think?

A (very attractive) black girl in a shop in Atlanta had a name tag that read 'Mashell' which I have always assumed was her mother's attempt to write 'Michelle' on the birth certificate.

My Eldest Niece's name (my real ones not my surrogates ones) Is Caitlin pronounced Kate-Lynn

her "middle names" are Her mum and her Mother-in-law's maiden names (poor girl)

Then there's Lauren Yvonne, Kelsey May and Samuel William Peter (it's just coincidence that I'm Peter William, his middle names are chosen after his two granddads, and he gets called "Sammy")

My surname is of cornish extract so my parents wanted to give me a name that would be in keeping with it so they named me Tamzyn. Because they liked the name but didn't want any bad luck associated with the name - apparently the last witch to be burnt at the stake in cornwall was named Tamsin, they changed the spelling :what-is-that-about? smilie:

I have come across other variations such as Tamzin, Tamsyn etc but not another ZYN yet. I don't have any problem with spelling variations, some are quite nice. I have received many compliments on the spelling of my name.

I did however take a long time to "grow" into my name. I got a lot of nasty name calling at school and my mother only told me a little while ago that I have two middle names I could have used instead if I didn't like Tamzyn

    Re: Unique Names

I have a relative who decided it would be nice to name one of her sons Keegan. Haven't heard of many of those (and no connection with the footballer, they don't live in the UK)?

I have a friend whose first names are Joan Leigh. They had John Lee picked out if it was a boy - after John Lee Hooker!

Pronunciation is an interesting one. A friend who was called David - pronounced 'Da-veed' because he was from S America - most people here called him David. He didn't seem to mind though.

My mate Dave (to all his Scottish Uni friends) has introduced himself down in York as David - he can't stand the pronunciation of Dave in a Yorkshire accent (not sure if it goes for all English accents) He loves the Yorkshire people, just can't stand their "mangling" of Dave.
