    From this news story:

BBC NEWS | World | Asia-Pacific | NZ judge orders 'odd' name change

Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii? What were her parents thinking?!

However, I'm glad they allowed Number 16 Bus Shelter and the twins Benson and Hedges.

My cousin's little boy is Ryall, which is Gaelic for (I think) King. The anglicised version is Ryan

As most of my cousins have names that have Gaelic labels / meanings, he was just carrying on the tradition. Ryall suits the cute wee tearaway.

I think the celeb name trend is catching on fast i mean Angelina Jolie gave birth to two twins very recently and named them...

    knox jolie pitt

    and

    vivienne marcheline jolie pitt

also their's nicole ritchie's baby girl named harlow

    was she born in essex???

(my feeble attempt at a joke)

i once knew two girls called Vogue and Cartier, all i could think was they're mum must have been a designer guru.

Nothing new there. The two that spring to mind are David Bowie's son, Zowie and Frank Zappa's daughter Moon Unit?
I'm sure it's probably been going on longer than that too.

    5. PORN STAR NAME (first pet's name, the place you were born in):

Cuddles Haverfordwest. Clearly the sole reason why I'm not living a life of luxury in LA right now.

    7. YOUR ACTION HERO NAME (first name of the main character in the last film you watched, last food you ate)

Carrie Cranberry-Pecan. This could be a winner.

The reason why names like Ernest, Edith, Humphrey etc are now unusual is because they were fashionable about 70 -100 years ago and most people with those names are ancient or dead. Names go in waves of fashion, which is why virtually every Derek, Brian or Sheila you will meet is 50+ and nobody under 30 is called Tracey or Darren. There was a wave of Laurens, Jades, Callums and Connors about 10 years ago. Imogens and Olivias, Chloes, Zoes and Olivers are now ten a penny. No doubt all these parents thought they were being incredibly original but I think these names will date.

To avoid being permanently carbon-dated by your name your parent should be considerate enough to give you a name that is fashion-free, as far as can be predicted. Something boringly solid like the more common biblical names or the monarchs of England. (Not Ethelred or Nebuchnezzar unless they're leaving you the cash to pay for the psychotherapy.)

Flower names for girls are OK as long as they are not too dippy/whimsical/cutesy - "Poppy" sounds great on a winsome 2 year old, she may be less pleased about it when she's standing for Parliament or commanding the allied forces.

Some names are also a dead give-away of social class - Kayleigh or Marcus spring to mind as instantly evoking council estate or Upper-class-twit-of-the-year.

Can anyone think of a reason why there was not a spate of children being christened Diana either at the time of the POW's wedding or her death? I don't think the name has ever been very fashionable despite being attractive, familiar, feminine, dignified and easy to spell, making it eminently suitable. After all, William and Harry are probably now in the top 20 choices for boy babies.

I spat my tea over my keyboard with this comment under the actual story:

My unusual name hasn't affected me at all; in fact, it has helped me make friends and improve my confidence, especially since leaving school.

Another recent case here involved a couple wanting to name their child 4Real.

I have nothing against unusual names, but there's a limit..... and using txtspk or digits is well past it in my opinion. I'd love to know the story behind Number 16 Bus Shelter though

    Re: Unique Names

Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban's choice of baby name has had a few laughs here in Oz. If you haven't heard, they called their daughter "Sunday Rose".... yet it has been laughed at as "Sunday Roast"!
Apparently the "Sunday" part was suggested by Nicole's father - there was a muse called "Sunday" of an Aussie painter.

Theres a company here called "Business and Decision" that i did a training course for once - but when most people say it, it sounds like "Business Indecision", not such a flattering name - when they took over another company which then inherited the name, the employees found this hilarious.

Up there with David Davies, Maurice Morris and Owen Owen. What is it with us Welsh?

Let's not forget William Williams, either. Yeah, him as well.
