Caught the news on the radio last night driving home of Mike Reid's death. Yes, his comedy could be seen as -ist (race, sex, age...) but he was damn funny and it wasn't the material itself that made me laugh but the manner in which he delivered it. Just a few weeks ago a mate and I had been saying that we really should catch him live in concert - sad to say that won't happen now he's had to 'turn it in' for good
According to the news, he had got a clear bill of health check the 2 weeks before he died.
Just shows ya really, when your times up your times up.
One of my fav Mike Reid jokes.
"I went to see that Pavarotti in concert the other night...he's a grumpy git isn't he? He doesn't like it when you join in."
One of my faves (OTTOMH)
"I went to this cafe the other day, the sign outside said 'Food at popular prices'. I ordered a meat pie and a cup of tea.
'How much is that, cocker?'
'£8.50'
'£8.50?!? £8.50?!?Are you having a laugh. The sign outside says food at popular prices?'
'Well, I f***ing like them'
It's the way he told 'em
For me he will always be remebered as Frank Butcher in Eastenders. I used to watch it back then. The best scene was him turning up naked at Pats house one evening in just a bow tie that lit up and turned around... made me feel sick and hysterical all at the same time. The sick bit being him and Pat together obviously, firstly she is a lesbian..... but funny as hell as an Eastenders scene.
I can picture hear him yelling at the angels.... 3,2,1 Run Araaaaaaaaaaaand!!!! and handing the winner a Grifter
