One quick thought -- my cooker needs the timer set to operate the oven(s) -- the burners operate regardless.

I know I'm a complete numpty.
I've just moved into a flat (Central Milton Keynes) and said white heap of confusion was already installed!
I cannot for the life of me work the cooker. There is no manual either and the only markings on it say Ariston!
If anyone can put me out of my misery I will be very appreciative as I'm starving. It's good for the diet though!
I've attached a pic! Im on dial up waiting for broadband connection so will add more as I can!

I've never used Electric cookers - always been Gas! I couldn't set a timer-alarm - clock - ^&*^&*( thingy on an old fashioned egg timer! I've thought about using google to get the manual but I don't have a model number!
I can't upload anymore pics either cos my dial up is Poo and I'm praying something will go right soon!!!
I think your best bet is going to be to call Ariston on 0870 6070805. They are probably going to want a model number, but they should be able to tell you where to look on the cooker to find it.
Apparently Ariston don't put their manuals online, which isn't terribly helpful...
Ariston - didn't they have adverts with a jingle that went 'Ariston, da da da da - and on and on and on' - to the tune of Trio's 'Da Da Da Da'?
You could always sing to it nicely and maybe it will turn itself on, and on and on..........
PS - Does this mean you will be making more appearances at MK on Wednesdays?
if you know the model number

Ok, the first symbol looks like an alarm, the 2nd and 3rd cooking options, the 4th a stop symbol I think. I've had to fiddle about with something similar - you need to get a time set on it first, once you've done that it should be at least a bit easier to get the thing working. What I found with cookers that have buttons like that is that you usually have to use combinations of buttons to set things on them - ie if you wanted to set the alarm, then you'd hold down the alarm button and then press the + and - buttons to adjust it.
Hope that helps, let us know how you get on!
Yes the combination I chose made it go balistic for a few hours, before finally returning back to its unit and shutting down into sleep mode.
Now why didn't I think of that!
Got one! but nothing beats proper cooking, not that you'd know, Isn't your nickname at Hubby's work Mrs Ping?
Is there a big red switch on the wall somewhere with an on and off marked on it (or possibly it's worn away). If the cooker is totally non-responsive to anything you're doing, it could be that the power isn't switched on at all.
Just a thought - and good luck!
By jove, I think he's got it.
However, that's the timer. I'm racking my brain, had a similar problem once. You had to go through one routine to COOK NOW, and another to set a start time and a stop time if you wanted the over to come on and cook your tea so that it would be ready when you return.
If there's a stop button (the hand) then button two or three must represent a start time and a temperature, though not necessarily in that order. Clearly if pressing one and the + button at the same time goes to 59 and then to 1.00, then it would be the start time, and the other one would be the temperature. Until you get any better solution, set the start time to 5 minutes from the current time, and the stop time appropriately. Quite how you make the oven COOK NOW might be more problematic...
Oh, and on a legal point, if you have contracted for a flat with an oven in, and the one that's there doesn't work, the landlord is in breach. It's not acceptable for him to say 'Well I'm sure it does work - you're just going to have to work out how'. He needs to provide you with instructions or a functioning oven.
To set the time, - hold the 2nd and 3rd buttons in together, - then press + or -.
Trevor.
The hand icon says "manual" to me, rather than stop, but what do I know about ovens?

I hate icons - let's have it spelled out; in English.
On my (Zanuzzi) cooker depressing plus and minus together after a power cut or some other weird event resets it to manual mode.
What percentage of people, I wonder, ever program in any cooker timings ?
Right...............
Firstly thanks guys n gals for all your help!!
Now I've managed to set the clock...........
I can now get the grill to work (ish)
Nothing else does, it just blows cold air!

Oh and Twirly - Yes I'd already switched it on at the big red button!!!
