    Lord of fraud

    Hoorah!

Conrad Black has been found guilty. Looks like he will go to jail, and it appears that there are many civil suits lined up against him which will have an excellent chance of success on the back of a criminal conviction, which means he will be made bankrupt which will hopefully make life uncomfortable for his highly unpleasant wife, Barbara Amiel. (A woman who would give Leonora Helmsley a run for her money in the 'most unpleasant rich female' stakes.)

As for the sentence, it seems that the judge is able to take into account the accused's conduct during the trial. Since Black has not been in the court, but travelling around the US promoting his biography of Napoleon ('nice bloke, good trick to avoid taxes by getting himself made Emperor, but can't help thinking he could have done better if he'd been a bit greedier and more ostentatious') and slagging off the prosecutor and his team at every opportunity. So, not many plus points there, then.

It seems that, because he's not a US national, Black cannot hope to be incarcerated in a 'club fed' type prison, but will go to an ordinary low-security penitentiary where he will work for cents-an-hour to supplement his prison issue.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.

I think Black made the mistake of stealing money from other rich people. Silly boy. If he'd just stolen from poor folk like any normal rich money-grabbing scumbag, no-one would have bothered. Well, no-one who matters anyway.

I've heard that Richard Cheney's an even nicer bloke.

Sadly, true. Although the people at Enron went to prison (except for the guy who pulled a Pinochet and claimed to be too ill for prison - by dying) they bilked poor people and rich people.
