    Re: Fish Oil Supplements

My son has Aspergers Syndrome and as a result can't really concentrate for long periods. While I could have a direct influence on his diet, I added an Omega 3 oil supplement to his food before he ate it for about 6 months without changing the rest of his diet (I'd long since cut foods with high amounts of additives out of his diet anyway) and it made a noticeable difference at home and at school.
Unfortunately, since I lost that influence he's back on flavoured coloured crisps, coke and any other crappy convenience food he fancies, no fish oils and it all went downhill again.
Fortunately, we've just got him a place in a specialist residential school where his diet is looked after properly.

There have been more and more studies showing that fish oil supplements can really work for children's attention spans especially those with ADHD, Autism and other related disorders. The results done on adults are inconclusive.

With all the work and publicity that has gone into children's diets at the moment with Jamie Oliver and all that, it is a shame when all the education given to the parents is pushed aside (not you particularly Gav, just generally ). I have been reading today that the free fruit scheme in schools does not seem to be working as children are not being given the portions of fuit and veg at home.

Thanks for the correction Dizzy - that'll teach me to believe what I read! So it's more of a case of avoiding too much in case you accidentally get pregnant and decide to keep it I guess.

I can help if you like the idea of aromatherapy. Oils of basil, peppermint and rosemary are good for keeping you awake/increasing your attention whilst studying. Put a couple of drops of each into a diffuser, or if you don't have that a cup of warm water near you (but don't drink by mistake!), or a tissue. As you are studying in the evening however, and presumably want to sleep afterwards, go easy on it - start using at 8, but don't top up when the effects start to wear off, or you could be up all night! I would suggest that you then have some camomile tea and maybe use a drop of lavender on your pillow to help you sleep (just one - too much lavender will keep you awake as well).

However, DO NOT USE if you have any heart problems, high blood pressure or any circulatory problems. The oils work by increasing blood flow to the brain, and raising blood pressure. Also, do not use if pregnant - and avoid rosemary if you suffer from heavy periods, as it can make it worse (or bring them on early).

Ever so slightly off topic - I heard a rumour that the levels of mercury in fish like tuna and wild salmon, although a trace, can be enough if you eat it twice a week to cause headaches and depression, particularly in women. Is this true or yet another scaremongering tactic by people who don't want anyone to know what's actually good for them to eat?

I was just getting into the aromatherapy idea too and my stooopid BP gets in the way.

I'm working on this too but a family history is hard to overcome

I did hear that when it came out but have not been told any conclusive evidence that it is true. I feel that it is probably one of thse stories that will be 'don't eat this/do eat this' cases like with HRT - one minute you can take it, the next you shouldn't.

At the end of the day, only you can decide how something makes you feel. It will be the risk of developing headaches versus developing heart disease.

Maybe its a similar thing to not eating vegetables in case you die of a build up of pesticides or other chemicals, or eating meat because of the various things that are given to cattle. I imagine that the fish case could well have some validity if you are eating stuff close to an industrial area (would the North Sea count in this case?). At the end of the day, there are so many chemicals going around that they will probably find their way into the food chain in some way.

On a separate note, as far as things that are bad to pregnant women are concerned, some studies suggest that morning sickness actually exists as a natural way of getting rid of food (or drink) that is bad for the embryo's health. (links to the dreaded wikipedia )
