When I first encountered Mornington Crescent on another forum I was directed to a website with the officially sanctioned tournament rules and they made my head hurt. Then I realised the game isn't really about getting to Mornington Crescent.. it's about seeing how long you can string poor noobs like I was along with the ride

    That sounds fun! Whee!
CJ sent me to read the rules on Wikipedia last night. So I pretended to do so. So does that mean I was one of the stupids or he was? I still don't get the humour in it though

Isn't it just equivalent to spouting a load of nonsense? Oh hang on, it's just another ordinary thread then....

He's a star, isn't he? OK, I'm sure he doesn't write his lines, but he delivers them with such panache...

It is exactly equivalent to a load of nonsense - if you want to spoil their fun, just shout "mornington crescent" and the tedium stops. I reckon it's one of the weaker parts of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue; compared with say "one song to the tune of another" there is little wit actually involved, and the in-joke isn't very funny if everyone knows it's an in-joke.

I'd like to start another thread on that alone - but here are a few (The panellists must suggest alternative definitions for existing English words.)

Argy Bargy - Owner of a narrow boat in Buenos Aires
Binge - where Sean Connery puts his bottles
    Bloater - Japanese straw hat
    Carmelite - a half-hearted Buddhist
Fundamentalist - give money to David Icke
Geriatric - next time Germany starts a war
Malady - Bit like a duck
Midwifery - half-way through breaking wind
Pie Crust - What you get if you don't polish your pike
Sorcerer - even more of a saucer
    Snuff Box - A coffin
    Surcharge - Cash for Honours
    Titillate - delayed puberty
Uganda - go and have a look
Winnebago - a horse with a bad back

Well, unless of course one has godlike powers of thread-editing to hand.

Of course, I can't imagine anyone would abusing my - err, their - position in that way.

Did you hear the episode before last? Apparantly she is bored of sausage (or whatever it was!) from Mr Dewhurst and was going to Mr Sainsbury to see if she can get 'A toungue in Cider'!

I liked the one about when she was going out with a somewhat stingy old gentlemen, but she knew if she buttered him up, she'd be able to make him splash out on her.

    Ahem.
