Reasons to Deprecate Organised Religion, Part 4

Especially where the organised religion concerned gets involved in schools...

I would love a name like Max Hell. Reminds me of the simpsons :-

    Trent: "Trent Steele."
Homer: "Homer Si ... uh, Max Power."
    Trent: "Oh, hey! Great name!"
Homer: "Yeah, isn't it? I got it off a hair dryer."

    Quite, quite unbelievable.

I'd write something pertinent but I've been rendered speechless.

What do they do if someone of latin-american descent called Hey-seuss wants to join?

Wouldn't you be seized by an irresistible need to slap some sense into the priest if you were there when he said something like that?

I have to fall back on something Charlie Brown used to say - Augh!

    On the question of religion.

I wish to report on a dream I had the other day. In the dream, I met the Proclaimers (details fuzzy) and I told them how brilliant I thought their music was.

But they insisted on talking about religion and I had to tell them I thought it was all rubbish.

    How weird is that?

Why don't I have dreams about ordinary things, like eating at the Savoy or walking in the New Forest?

Presumably because you have banished all your fairy story needs to your subconscious, no?

I just find thinking through the ramifications of this one quite entertaining. Hell is a moderately frequent Austrian surname, Austria is a very Catholic country, and the German for Hell is Hölle anyway, so the issue simply doesn't arise there. Unless Hölle is also a surname in use...

I suspect in this case, you have a priest who just didn't want his style cramped. Telling unruly 6-year olds that if they don't behave they will "go to Hell", loses impact when Hell is known to everyone as the blond cherubic kid at the back.

Again, it's the "magic word/picture" aspect of religions, this time not quite the typical "blasphemy" scenario. Still, the priest is not as bad as anyone threatening to kill people for drawing a picture...

I very nearly ended up in a priest's seminary school when I was 12...thank the Lord (or whoever) I didn't.

Isn't the point that my subconscious seems to be as rabi... er, enthusiastic about atheism as me?

That, and the enforced bumming which would no doubt have gone on.
