Do you know the name of the firewall program?

A firewall is like a moat around a castle, it'll stop anything getting in or out, including your emails. You need to tell your firewall that it's ok to let youe email program send emails be sent as to the firewall it might look like nasty malware reporting back over the internet.

    Re: Sending emails

You need to go into your firewall settings and ensure that you have Port 25 open. This is the SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) port.

In English.... imagine ports are like doors in the firewall. Each specific door lets in or out specific things. Port (or door) 25 lets out your email. If the firewall has it locked... then the mail can't get out.

It may be a wider ISP issue - if this is the case then you may be into OP25B territory. You need to contact your ISP and ask them... webmail will still work as this uses a different door

    Re: Sending emails

I had a similar experience when I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled everything from scratch. Outlook and "Norton Internet Security" just weren't getting on together, even though they were installed on a fairly clean installation (which should work more often). I couldn't receive any emails (probably couldn't send either - never got that far), and got the same results from different ISPs, whether Broadband or dialup

I uninstalled both Outlook and Norton and then reinstalled, and Norton worked properly second time round, even though I'm pretty sure I didn't set any options differently. I think Norton has some sort of "learning" mode which seems to result in random behaviour.
