You know.. geek used to be an insult too.. Now some people (the crazy fools) take it as a badge of honour.

Very few people like being called Nerds or Nerdy though..

< / slightly on topic (but only just) tone lightening >

The word Nigger (or Nigga / Niggah etc etc etc) is only abusive because we think it that way. it stems from the Latin niger meaning Black.

There was a time when political correctness ran wild when even the word "Black" was offensive.. it was "Persons of colour" etc The word Black refers to a colour , a colour cannot be insulting unless we deem it to be. If we take away the stigma attached to such words we limit the arsenal that racist people can use.

I mean, There are some people who , will utter "My god what an utter Geek!" meaning it in an insulting and derogatory manner. To which I turn to them, smile sweetly and "hehe, Thanks for noticing!"

If the word no longer has its "power" then it can't be used maliciously .

or perhaps this is just the inane ramblings of some Myopic geeky Honky Jock!! !

i dont know about you but i totally enjoyed the whole thing. The discomfort on Charleys face was great, cause she is an annoying bitch and the total realisation at what Emily had done by Emily was also great. I sucked in my breath when she said it as it is such a word that you should never use but kept me glued to my set for the whole hour and something it was on. Brilliant car crash television, makes me appreciate my normal life and the normal people apparantely in it.

For something to be acceptable if you are one race and unacceptable if you are another is clearly racist. Therefore this situation perpetuates racism and shouldn't be approved. Again, it's all down to context. It's quite possible to be racist without using any words with attached racial stereotypes. All you have to do is assume that somebody is a particular way because of their race - unless, of course, you were to assume that somebody is a great dancer and fabulous kisser because they are of Scottish decent: some things are so obviously a racial factor they are beyond doubt

Black people refer to each other as "nigger" all the time. Apparently this is OK. White people that call black people "nigger" are apparently racist. So it seems that the word nigger can only be used by black people. Surely that discriminates against the rights of white people......

Possible, but I doubt it. Niger is the latin adjective for black. Niger, nigra, nigrum. I imagine it was used for black people throughout the dark and middle ages.

Not sure how many of those uses were recorded, but I bet there were some.

This smacks of a huge double standard to me. As do the MOBO awards - imagine the uproar if there was an award ceremony for just Music Of White Origin. I despise racism in all it's forms, even the insidious reverse variety. If there is a claiming back of a word, then that word should be available for all to use - no?

As for this specific incident, Emily called Charlie a nigger to try and ingratiate herself towards her, to appear urban and street. Whilst discussing the size of Charlie's belly (was it fat (as opposed to phat)) Emily said "You are pushing it out nigger!" Emily is uneducated in life (claiming there was a new type of music that was going to sweep the nation called indie for example). She's not guilty of being racist, just dense!

Is "Latin music" also a racist term then? Should we prosecute people who have a "Latin room"

I think C4 are guilty of marketing -

"someone said a bad word, look we're respectable in throwing them out, but controversial enough that we get the sort of person who would say bad words so we can demonstrate how respectable we are "

P.S. Please watch our show, we are due more bad words very soon, because of the sort of person..etc..

I think its funny, that there is so much stigma attached to the word "nigger" DavidJames cannot say it

Just to liven this up, if you like off-beat comedies then this clip from Clerks 2 is quite apt:

Oi....! If he wants to flatter me, in the way that young men do to old women, thinking they are going to get a quid out of my purse, then let him.
