Re: Southport June 07 - How Was It For You?

wow... what a weekend. I think this was my best Southport yet, they just get better and better for me. What really made it for me this time was the sheer amount of WCS freestyle

    A quick review:

    The Good

    - J&T cabaret, workshops, and social dancing with us pretty much all night long.... those guys are such an inspiration (how on earth do they manage the lack of sleep ??? )

    - Impromptus WCS sets that went on for hours and hours in the Den - although it meant obviously missing out on the blues room - can't have it all, can you ?

    - some really nice tango dances

    - too many truly amazing dances to mention them all... thanks

    - LM and LC's cakes

    - drinking my birthday champagne just outside the blues room at 4 am on sat morning - thanks RK

    - forum bbq - although I admit I didn't get to put names on all faces - am not that a social person in the first place and can get a bit intimidated in big crowds

    - superb chalet mates

    - the marquee over the blues room temp floor - to me this really created an atmosphere, with the outside feel, yet somehow secluded from the car park

    - my first waltz class and dances, with Paul F - can a girl ask for a better partner to waltz with ? thanks for being so kind and cheeky enough to teach me even more technique and moves Loved the feeling of the dance even if the posture first felt completely alien to me - I still don't understand why you should look away from your partner, this seems so wrong to deprive yourself of eye connection

    - line dancing workshop - even if I didn't get to do the second one - loved it. Definately hunting down for local classes now

    - discovering how passionate and committed to social dancing Paul W is -

    - my dances with Jordan Although still a bit too intimidated to really 'go for it' - getting better though, one day, hey

    - being Jamie and RK's dance dummy during their private - love watching and taking notes - always trying to absorb as much as I can from Tat... Thanks guys.

    - some really nice compliments on my dancing - although I was also told by some people that I was intimidating - I haven't refused a single dance all week-end and wonder what I can do about that really

    The Bad

    - blues room overcrowded esp at the beginning of the night, with music more appropriate for the main room or the latin room

    - having J&T last workshop on musicology in the Den, which was as predictible so overcrowed lots of people had to leave - when there were just under 25 couples in the main room - seriously what's the point ? and it's not the first time either - well annoyed with that

    - the Den room temperature - was there even a single fan in there ? Again, how difficult would that be ???

    - being told by several people that they didn't dare dancing WCS in the Den because they felt it was intimidating with a lot of teachers / great dancers in the room - what can be done about that I am not sure as I don't understand it very well, I mean yes there are some pretty awesome dancers out there but surely they are more of an inspiration than anything else ? Also I don't know of any more friendly atmosphere - I don't think refusals are common place, and folks are happy to dance with everyobdy (although I was refused a few times by some guys who felt they were not experienced enough to go on the floor and try - feel really sorry about that and wish my convincing skills were somewhat better ).

    - chatting with Jordan and seeing how he felt really bad (the words he used were 'I feel like sh1t', to be precise) to have to turn down some dances as he was completely exhausted - I'm sure people understood it though and appreciated the sheer amount of social dancing he's done with us

    - the lack of waiters / bar staff in the blues room - when a substancial amount of water was spilled on the floor, they didn't even bother mopping it up, although several people went to report it to the bar

    on a less serious note...

    - leading in the first 2 WCS classes, and focusing on moving Jennifer's center enough for her to rock but not enough to triple - and realising a few minutes later that I had in fact been starring at her breast - Thanks sweety and Witty for putting up with my elementary leading skills

    - my feet and legs hurt beyond description

I'm sure I've forgotten loads, but this is it for now - going back to catching up on sleep now

Re: Southport June 07 - How Was It For You?

Still tired so time for a few more disjointed thoughts:

Still missed dancing with a few people that I was determined to catch .

I've never been able to follow at all until (a slightly worse for wear) SnowWhite decided I didn't have any choice in the matter. . Thanks Sara, that's the only time I've ever managed to follow at all and it was all thanks to you. It's just annoying that you can lead me better than I can lead you!

The music in the blues room did seem a bit ropey from time to time and I'm not normally one for knowing who the DJs are, but I know that TWK's set last night was about the best I heard.

Woodface, your following is getting better each time we dance. Impressed with the scissors, lift thingy. Great fun!

The Unicorn fancy dress was brilliant. Took a few seconds to work that one out!

Thanks DJ for helping me sort out my leading West Manhattans, worked everytime once you'd helped me.
and thanks again to DJ for giving DT a great Tango. Thanks to you, it meant that I could give it a go too.

Thanks to all the lovely ladies who put up with my new found love of dancing and my grinning like an idiot. I don't want to embarrass anyone by naming them or not, but suffice to say that there are 1 or 2 ladies who I always love to dance with and 1 that always has a great connection with me.

How many sleeps until the next Southport?

    I forgot:
the bad - realising now who was there and I didn't manage to have a dance with,
the ugly - me trying to follow in the double trouble class

Thumbs up Re: Southport June 07 - How Was It For You?

    well here goes......

I would like to thank my travelling partners.
Went we arrived we where very lucky to have no-one in the queue when we arrive so got our keys and straight to the chalet to unpack in record time and then put some dancing shoes on.
Great atmostphere. Nice to see peolpe I haven't seen since last June.

After some casual dances then food, Roast chicken and salad (well got to start with a healthy meal) We got ourselves ready and headed back to the blues room.
Very busy and had a few near misses. Flying arms.... Including my own
Went in the Den for a few WCS but unfortunately felt alittle intimidated (hard to plunk up courage to ask someone to dance then when you do they say can they get you for the next one!!) then don't..
but after ventured back to the blues room and jive room and had the most fancastic time.
    The highlights were ..........
The showcases were amasing, I think my mouth finally closed.....
The Jive room on Sunday Morning was the best time ever thankyou to the DJ for playing so long some great tracks. To James, Simon and Tigerpants for the most fun and making me feel like a million dollars.

The Workshops....(well the ones I went to)
Street Jazz.....So much energy and made everyone feel great, but of a shock having to perform in groups but worked really well
Line Dance......haven't done any for ages, but think I would like to take it up again had fun and nice to strut your stuff without feeling silly (thanks to my line dance buddy Trish for making it a hoot)
WSC......Really good loads to work on and trying to remember everthing
shame about the Den on Sunday little too crowded

well that's all from me (think this is the longest ever reply I've ever posted)
I would however Like to thank John and Wez for the most fanastic weekend again. I'll definately be back....
Already thinking of my plan to get time off for the next one.....

Great weekend - multiple thanks to John & Wes, their lovely ladies and their helpers`

The BBQ was the best so far, and it was double special to have John & Wes joining us

Sorry about my panick about the BBQs can't believe the only one we had at 5pm was the one I bought and I didn't even mention on the poll that I had bought it !

Thank you to Mrs. Dance Demon for helping me sorting out using ovens and grills to cook some of the food until the other BBQs arrived. (All the local ovens were full of yummy crumbles - thanks Aleks )

We had enough food and booze etc., to last through to the 9pm

AND and special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Captain Fantastic for an amazing display and helping everyone to join in

    - will give my comments on the weekend later - need zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz now

right back at ya Tiger Pants.

My second Southport, and not a disappointment. I too managed to park my car right next to my chalet even before I knew where it was!

Atmosphere was brilliant, familiar faces appearing all over the weekend, every visit to the dancefloor is like a reunion with old friends. New friends made too . Thank you to everyone for my dances.

Thanks especially to my car mates Barney, keeping me organised with Army precision, and Zara, keeping me awake on the last stretch, and to my dinner guests - glad my surprise appearance got you good and proper Paulette. Well done Clare for keeping up the act.

Great cabaret, amazing effort shown by everyone in uniforms (and for anyone looking for a new weightloss programme, try dancing in a wetsuit). IMHO it's what puts Southport above the others. That and the professionalism shown by the organisers.

And thanks for keeping the main ballroom going til 6am on Sat night/Sun morning. I know everyone raves about the Bluesroom, but I like it fast and could have kept up with Peter Phillips tempo for another hour I'm sure.

Off-the-wall highlight: thanks to the guy standing outside the chalet opposite on Sat night who must have spent over half an hour whipping up his cream. Our hysteria brought the whole block out when he got it stiff.

    See you all in September

Re: Southport - How Was It For You

I've just had a few hours sleep so I might well be up for writing this. This weekend was a bit of a strange one for me. I spent a lot of time socialising rather than dancing. It was good, don't get me wrong, and I enjoyed the social aspect loads but it just seemed a bit strange.

    The Exceptional

    • The lovely people I travelled with, The Passion Harem, Nessiemonster and Doune. They were entertaining to say the least and it made the car journeys just disappear.
    • Saying "hello" to jive_me. Doing a dance floor tour and generally chatting with her even though I'm not stalking her .
    • Having some really interesting dances with Little Yellow Fish including a dance or two where her feet never touched the ground and a lovely dance in the main room to Candyman. That girl is marvellous .
    • Some absolutely wonderful dances with Sparkles and Tess. They are both such amazing dancers .
    • General silly dancing like partner swapping and super lazy partner swapping.
    • My wonderful flatmate, Dizzy who came all the way back to the chalet to wake me up so I wouldn't sleeping through the rest of dancing .

    The Bad

    • Not meeting DJ. I don't even think he was there, I think he's just making stuff up about the weekend based on what he read in the programme.
    • That feeling that my dancing is going backwards at times rather than forwards . Maybe it was just one of those strange confidence things... meh.
    • Not getting half as many dances with anywhere near as many people as I would like but then I think nattering took up much of my time.
    • Failing, consistently, to attend workshops.
    • Not bringing down my uniform; I love what others did though it was great.
    • The absence of the company of the many that may no longer DJ or teach there. I didn't feel this in Feb as much as this one.

    The Disturbing

I'm sure there are things I've forgotten to mention but in the interest of not turning this into a seven hundred page essay I shall stop here. It was a really good weekender (much better than the one that I had in Feb where I was feeling ill) but I had some strange highs and lows in it.

Re: Southport June 07 - How Was It For You?

I went straight from Southport to two hours of ballroom tuition. It's now 10.45pm and although my brain is totally mushed my body is keen to keep on dancing. My limbs have never felt so relaxed in my entire life. I calculate that, allowing for the very few hours I spent sleeping and eating, I must have had close to 50 hours dancing over the weekend, and I'm still hungry for more.

The weekend was absolutely awesome and I had some of the very best dances of my life. The feeling of euphoric happiness is overwhelming.

It's so lovely to be able to share our experiences on the forum.

Specific highlights to follow when I'm more lucid.

Re: Southport June 07 - How Was It For You?

I had a brilliant weekend... due to many different factors...

The company - too many people to mention them all but I have to mention LimpyTink, who managed to make me cry with her kindness and Foxylady, for just being you! To MinnieM and Jiver, for being great Chalet mates

The WCS sets, curtesy of Jorden and Tatiana's iPods on Friday and Saturday in the dance den

Line Dancing - I LOVED it! And I'm definitely want to find a venue near me (although, I have to admit, I got very frustrated with myself on Sunday, as the routine got the better of me when we had to face a new wall, my brain simply couldn't cope! Argghhhh

Memorable moment - Witnessing one of the coolest dancers IMO ever (a line dancer called Rob) giving Jorden (who was lapping it up)an impromptu lesson at 7am this morning, on how do nearly impossible glidey things with his feet, it was something quite amazing, to say the least!

Zopiclone - the wonderful sleeping pill... being able to sleep at will, has revolutionised my weekenders! I felt as fresh as a daisy on Sunday night and I stayed right to the end without feeling and acting like a zombie with a bad case of PMT!

Tatiana saying "we're like sisters" (I think I should add at this point, she was everso slightly, OK VERY, 'merry' at the time! )

The BBQ - How fantastic was that ... and what entertainment! Thanks to CF and Rebecca and everyone who had a go at entertaining us, especially the guy (?) who came in our chalet and said he thought 'someone' from our party had stolen 2 of the (pontins) glasses from his chalet, he really was very worried about it and seriously considered, but turned down my offer to call the police to search us! You can't pay for entertainment like that, I thought I was going to get a hernia from laughing so much!

The Cabaret, Wow, J&T didn't let us down! I also enjoyed the other acts too, the team cabaret was hilarious!! Caz, our little plan worked.. we ended up with an unrestricted view! :

Fancy-dress. Well done to Mr and Mrs Underpar, for winning. you were worthy winners again!
On the fancy-dress theme, I've never danced in a short skirt before and it was quite an experience, especially when your partner is dressed in an even shorter nurses outfit! eh Sparkles!

I'm not sure if this was good or bad but certainly memorable - I had two of the fastest spinning experiences ever.. Woodface, bless him decided to end our dance with assisted spins... about 30-40 of them! I needed serious assistance to get to the hand rail and then had to hold on tight to it for at least 2 minutes to stop me falling over. It was good really..I think? And Spindryer made me scream with his penguin walks, they were scarily fast!

The sad - having a couple of people make passing comments that they don't like asking me to dance anymore, as they can't do WCS .... Guy's, lets get this straight, right now.....I love ALL kinds of dancing!! (especially if they're fun!)

Checking in was a bit slow but I couldn't understand why people were stressing so much, it was a lovely day, the bar was open and the music was playing... I had a little giggle at the people who decided to queue up all hot and squashed for an hour! I just took the opportunity to have a dance, a nice social drink and a chat. … then when the queue died down, I simply strolled up to the empty desk and got the key!

A big Thank you to each an every person who danced with me!

And lastly, on a personal note, this weekend has opened my eyes to a whole new perspective on things... its been an extremely refreshing time for me!

can I just say a huge to that...

Sometimes during a dance guys will say 'sorry I can't wcs' when really I should be the one apologising for not dancing straight MJ and probably taking up too much space within their lead, and sometimes may be taking over the lead for a short while. Sorry this happens when I get lost in the music, and is the way I really like dancing

Re: Southport June 07 - How Was It For You?

What an amazing weekend, the atmosphere was incredible, I am so glad I decided to go at the last minute.

    Highlights;
    • Dinner saturday and sunday evening with The Librarian and co.

This was so funny, a guy was just stood outside his chalet frantically whipping cream, which was a que for many innuendos from us, when he was done he did a little victory dance, we all clapped and cheered which bought loads of people out of their chalets to see what was going on.
    • Meeting lots of Forumites including little yellow fish, little monkey and Fletch.
    • Staying up Saturday night until 10am Sunday morning That was so much fun, although I lost my ability to walk and talk at the end and had to be escorted back to my chalet for fear I would fall asleep face down on the grass on the way back!
    • AMAZING DANCES thank you to: Spindryer (we had loads of dances, first time we met-great guy) Jamie-lovely as usual, especially sunday and our double trouble with the tramp. Spikey Steve- Lots of fun with double trouble and partner swaping with Warren (Warren and I now have our own brand of dance called 'jackass jive' we tend to beat the hell out of each other )
    • I had a particularly elegant and sophisticated dance with Caz- We jumped and hopped our way through a whole track, note to person who filmed us-purleese dont make it public!!!!!)
    • Roger C and Jamies dance in the Blues room Sun.... these guys have no boundries... v entertaining
    • Roger C- Got me a place last minute, gave up his bed for the sofa and was a fantastic chalet buddy. Your a star
    • Dancing for an hour after the DJ had finished this morning thanks to Spindryer bringing his stereo over, we only left when we got kicked out
    • Loads more....
    The bad;

    So so so hot!!!
    • Falling asleep at 10pm Sunday and not getting out 'til 2.30am
There was a few more highlights... I cant really remember now....oh yeah!
I danced with JOSEPH!!! Attempted to teach him a bit of jive, we had about three dances during sat night, he was very charming.
I also danced with some bird called TATIANA..... Wow amazing, she is so hot, unfortunately I led, so wasnt so good for her, but she was lovely and chatty and gave me lots of compliments
and at 7am this morning , I danced with JORDAN, he is soooo handsome!
I was really scared about asking these guys to dance, but I reasoned I would only regret it later if I didnt, so I just went for it and Im really glad.

Sorry, what a post! You can tell I was a Southport virgin.....Roll on the next weekender, Im ready for the next one....

    Fabulous

Had some of my best dances in a long time, so thank you to all you lovely dancers. What is it about 3 till 5am in the blues room that just gives me that amazing burst of energy and adrenaline to keep going and going and going????

Bailed out at 5am purely cos the drive back sadly does require some level of concentration and alertness (6 hours plus to get back to Surrey following a major traffic jam on the M40 )

Can't put the highs or lows into words other than what other people have already said (J&T, uniforms, empty water bottles, etc), but the highs far outweighed any lows... Except that my feet are still throbbing and will do so for the next few days but I suppose that's selfinflicted so... Brain is as dead as a dodo due to lack of sleep (again selfinflicted ). Perhaps also due to lack of nicotine as I gave up smoking (again ) Friday eve.

Sorry I missed the forum BBQ, even though it was right on "my" doorstep, as our 3 chalets (imagine, 11 girls, one man and a dance pole... ) were having our own BBQ in honour of Heidi's birthday. But met some of you on and off the dance floor over the weekend anyway

Raphael, trust you had sweet dreams after our double trouble with Christine. And yes, I know you were NOT leading SOME of those moves... Christine does NOT need much enouragement, does she Me on the other hand, I am innocence in persona, you know that, of course...

    Roll on September!!
