Weston Super Mare , the event, the results, the aftermath.

Have just got back from Weston Super Mare with Mrs Par.

I was a bit apprehensive about an event mainly based on West Coast Swing as I haven't done much of it although Mrs Par has been doing a few lessons.

2 rooms were run on Friday evening.

The Jive room was a bit quiet but had really amazing music 3 DJs ( Sheepman,Wes and an unknown to me Graham ? ) played a belting evenings music fit for a Southport Blues room.

The WCS room was heaving which was to be expected as there were so many more Westies were present. The DJs used in this room where Sheepman and Graham . This room did get a bit hot but it didn't seem to deter the throngs.

Saturday had 3 rooms of teaching going on. Jive was taught Nigel Anderson with Lindsay demoing( so glad you got that gig Lindsay great to see you there) and David Plummer and Madeline.
Disappointingly for these teachers but great for those attending as they got great tuition the lessons were not so well attended.

This was due to the fact that most of those attending where there to see the
WCS teachers flown in from America, Robert and Nicole Royston and Jessica Cox and Parker Dearborn.

These 2 couples worked their socks off, doing lessons all day before judging the 3 WCS comps in the evening and finishing the evening with 2 cabaret performances that literally took your breath away.

The 2 WCS lessons I watched( both by Robert and Nicole) were IMHO quite brilliant. Their enthusiasm, passion, humour and ability to communicate the lesson were second to none and it certainly kept me a non-westie watching and listening till the end.

Comments made about Parker and Jessica's lessons were very positive too.

The Competition was run in the evening.

A Jack and Jill , a Novice and an Open as well as a jive DWAS

I loved watching the comp. So many people giving it a go.

Open was won by Cat and Paul Warden.

Novice was won by a lovely couple from Paris.

I'll have to let others fill in the rest of the results.

The best part for me was the cabarets. The speed, agility, power and musicality of both couples performances left me pinching myself. They truly were awesome.

Great event, loads of fun. loads great dancers, great dancing, great music.

Needs more air con at the venue got very hot.

Re: Weston Super Mare , the event, the results, the aftermath.

    My review...

On Fri night, after a busy week and with a headache, I was tired and didn't want to dance. But I enjoyed sitting in the WCS room and watching - the room was really busy and there was lots of fab dancing going on.

    Classes
On Sat I only did a couple of classes as I didn't want to overload my brain! One with each of the two teaching pairs. I really enjoyed the connection technique class with Robert and Nicola. I get excited when dance teachers start talking technique instead of moves - I know the leaders need the moves and patterns too, but I want to get to grips with how to actually do the dance, and why certain things are done. Robert explained it all really well with exercises that illustrated the right and wrong way. Plenty of material for me to work on - and best of all, things I can work on even while not getting to do much practice with partners (which I can't do with patterns). Also sat in on the musiciality workshop - interesting to learn some new terms for what's going on in the music.

    Non dancing bits
Thanks to SuzyQ for organising the apartments - enjoyed getting to know a few other forumites a bit better.
Nice to be able to eat lunch in the venue while sitting listening in on another class. I also couldn't resist the beautiful sunny afternoon by the seaside and a walk along the pier was definitely in order.
Sadly had to miss the novice strictly swing heats as I needed time to eat, shower and change for the evening. (And watch Doctor Who 'cos I'd forgotten to set the video). Maybe could there be a break next time early evening for eating etc?

    Competition
Really enjoyed watching the competitions as they showed the different styles there can be in WCS. Well done to all who competed for giving it a go. The standard in all the finals was fab - glad we had really experienced judges making the decisions!

    Perfomances
What I can say about the performances? Excellent and inspiring. And that after a long day of teaching and judging.

    Freestyle
From a personal point of view I haven't been enjoying dancing so much recently and so initially wasn't actually dancing much and wasn't asking anyone to dance. Often at weekend events there is a dance when I start to pick up the pace and my 'weekender mood' kicks in, and this time it was a really fun WCS with a forumite (thanks ) where I almost felt I could WCS - and although I still danced a lot less than I usually do, I enjoyed all my dances from then on.

There were more people in the MJ room on Sat night - and it was lovely and cool so I spent some time in there, but kept getting drawn back to the main room to watch and absorb WCS while I could.

As well as all the bits that made up a good event, overall there was a feeling, for me at least, that this was a special event - the first big WCS event and comp in the UK. I think WCS will be growing and its nice to have been at that first event. Well done John & Wes!

Re: Weston Super Mare , the event, the results, the aftermath.

Well, I don't think that I can add much to what Lynn and UP have said but I am going to anyway.

    Friday
On Fri night, I went into the WCS and was blown away by the standard of dancing that was being performed. I sat and watched and felt that I knew nothing up until the point that it took me 2 hours just to go up and ask someone I knew to dance . Once, I had a few dances though, I really got into the music and even though it was so hot in the room the whole night, I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of dancers in the room and felt better about my WCS.

    Classes
On Saturday, I went to 3 classes and liked the combination of Rob and Nicola's classes talking about technique of WCS and Parker and Jessica's classes based more on variations of moves and syncopations . Their passion and enthusiasm for the dance inspired me and I walked away feeling I had learnt several things about my technique that I took away. I really enjoyed Rob's entertaining explanation of phrase changes using 'Doh a Dear' during one of his classes .

    Non dancing bits
Thanks to SuzyQ for organising the apartments - cheap as chips, only 5 minutes walk from the venue and the chance to socialise with forumites I had never met . Also, big thanks to UP for the recommendation of the best Fish & Chip shop in Weston-Super-Mare - Yummy!!

I did feel that the only limitation on the whole weekend was that there was no time between the classes and the first Jack & Jill competition and no time to eat so sadly, missed part of the heats and a class to get changed for my participation in the Jack & Jill comp (although did not get past the first heat, there was far better dancers there).

    Competition
Respect to everyone that competed - the standard was so high. I enjoyed participating in the Jack & Jill and DWAS comp even though I did not make it far. All the competition were judged using the US rules - the first heats took place dancing with 1 partnmer then randomly another partner. 5 men and 5 women were then picked for the final. The women finalists then picked a number from a hat and that couple had to dance 2 dances solo on the floor. They were then judged individually for the placing.

I don't know if I quite remember everyone who got into the finals but I am sure someone will post later. Jack & Jill was won by James McLaughlin from Strictly Dance Fever and his partner was a quite a young but talented lady from Exeter (can't remeber her name ), DWAS was won by our very own Kev F and his partner although Caro, Mary, Dave Hancock and Brady made the final. Novice category had Keith P & Sheila (Spikey Blonde), MsFab & Ollie, John & Syd, Ed (Geordieed) & Carron but was won by a couple from Paris. The Open category had Brady & Susan, Graham Fox & partner, James McLaughlin & partner & Simon Bowker & Rachel but was won by Cat Wiles and Paul Warden

Big respect to the US teachers who had to teach all day, hardly had any time to eat then had to sit through all the heats of these competitions to judge the best couples and then go on to perfrom cabarets.

    Perfomances
The performances were breathtaking and inspiring. I was watching Nicola throughout the night look after her 3 year old son while Rob was MCing then go onto watch them perform their cabarets filled with aeriels and musicality and was humbled by how normal these teachers are and had even more respect for them

    Freestyle
The freestyle after the comps was unfortunately cut short by an hour due to the speakers going down halfway through the comps so only gave us 2.5 hours of freestyle but I really enjoyed the dancing. Inspired by the classes and danciong on friday, I managed to grab Graham Fox for a dance and it got me straight into the weekender mood . I had a mental list of the dancers that I wanted to dance with before the night was out and I managed to dance with all of them including James McLaughlin , Brady, Dave Hancock, Simon and Paul Warden. I felt completely knackered by the time it had finished at 2.30am. Thanks to Dave Hancock for the hugs halfway through the night, I needed them .

I really feel that this is an event that is going to grow and grow each year and I hope to give my full support to it. Next year the event is going to be held at the HG Wells Centre in Woking which will make travel a lot easier .

    Well done John & Wes!

    Great week-end....

I really liked the venue, the weather was really good as well it felt like a mini-holiday. So good to take the sun for once (he doesn't reach us very often in aberdeen)!!!!

Freestyle was great, I had some very fun dances, it was also great to watch so many brilliant dancers around, I feel all inspired now...

The classes were extremely worthwhile, expecially Robert and Nicola's (it was the first time I attended classes by them), Robert is sooo technical and sharp... amazing really.

John, Wes, thanks for putting it all together, it was great, I hope next year we'll get a sunday tea dance as well to finish off the week-end

Excellent inaugural WCS event from John and Wes. Really good atmosphere amongst the crowd attending and it was great to see so many friends brave the spotlight sections of the competition.

The US pros were wonderful ambassadors for the dance (did anyone get a freestyle with them?). Got to agree with UP:

I thought a few of the couples in the strictly divisions didn't get the contrast in the songs they had to dance to (one slow; one fast) and I heard some songs repeatedly (don't know if that's generally frowned upon or not) but otherwise it was a thumbs up to the DJs over the weekend.

Naomi, I believe. Prodigiously talented dancer in a variety of styles. It was the first time I'd seen James McLaughlin dance and he's a hell of a mover and entertainer.

How did I forget the fish and chips?

When I was looking for lunch I saw people queueing in the street outside the chip shop called PAPAS.

Well I haven't seen people do that for years so I joined the queue and boy was it worth the wait best fish and chips I 've eaten for years (with mushy peas too !)

Re: Weston Super Mare , the event, the results, the aftermath.

I don't want to repeat too much of what has already been said on here. It was a fantastic weekend and much to John & Wes for taking the risk to put on this brand new event. And even better news, the event for 2008 is already in the calendar and more convenient for all, so will hopefully see more than one French couple next year!

Having been to several US events I can easily say that this was the closest thing to any of them, and it certainly wasn't far off. The atmosphere of the WCS music and everybody dancing WCS all night somehow gets you into things more than at a MJ event. It was also great to see several new faces on the WCS scene, many who came out from the line dance scene. Hopefully this has helped to link the two groups together for the future.

Despite being exhausted from teaching all day, I know Robert & Nicola and Parker & Jessica really enjoyed the weekend and felt that it well represented West Coast Swing, the way WCS should be. In fact, I've just had a text from Parker (who must have just got home!) saying that they had a great time here in the UK.

I would agree with you completely on this Simon. For example, Rob, who was in both the J&J Final and the Novice Strictly final, got the same two songs in both finals! I was surprised to hear tracks repeated and as you say many of the strictly competitors didn't have a distinct contrast in not only speed, but also style of music. I really noticed this in the Novice Strictly, but it was also the case in the Open as well. Overall, the competition music wasn't quite what would normally be heard in a US competition. Over there it tends to be the current hits on the scene that get used, especially for the higher up categories. Perhaps a competition track list could be obtained from one of the US deejays for next year.

A great event which Susan and I look forward to attending each year to support WCS here in the UK. Keep up the great work John & Wes and all of the West Coast Swingers will be behind you 110%!!!!

Haven't got alot of time to post but would like to say what a great weekend.
had lots of fun dances with lots of peolpe I haven't seen since last Southport and new ones. Personally felt a little overwhelmed on Friday but as the night warmed up I got more relaxed.
I would like to thank Wes and John for a fanastic event. Also to my DWAS partner, (Duncan I think, bit nervous at the time, didn't realise we were also going to be spot lighted in the final) He truely was a DWAS as we had never meet before walking on to that floor!!!!. Shame about the music, well done wes for fixing it.
thanks to Sheepman and Graham it must have been hard to keep us all interested for so long.
Now can't wait for Southport in June and more WCS.

So pleased you enjoyed Weston Dizzy.

The technical hitch occurred during the last track for the DWAS comp and we were appreciative of everyone's understanding and patience during the 20 minutes [timed it] it took Wes to resolve it in the Ballroom.

Re: Weston Super Mare , the event, the results, the aftermath.

I really enjoyed having a WCS weekend where I could be immersed in WCS rather than being on a weekender where WCS is in little snippets.

Weston-super-mare had sufficient nearby accommodation in hotels to support the numbers there and the Winter Gardens were a really nice venue for the event. The teaching was absolutely top notch and my only regret was that it wasn’t possible to be in both WCS lesson rooms at the same time. The teaching of Royston and Monica particularly appealed to me because the mechanics of how to achieve things was explained in terms of the physics of movement and I can understand things in these terms. I can see that once you can understand the mechanics of how to make things happen then you have a toolkit of understanding that allows you to put movements together in a much more powerful way than just learning each pattern as an item on its own.

The big thing for me was the freestyle. I find a lot of the better dancers intimidating, understanding and kind, but intimidating never the less. I also find that I think that I am getting to grips with things in the lessons but when it comes to the freestyle floor then the whole thing starts to unravel and all the springs and cogs of my WCS swing machine just seen to explode over the floor. But this weekend, somewhere just past midnight on the Saturday I found that I was actually starting to have FUN when dancing WCS. It is an important step for me and I am so thankful to all the people that helped me to finally get to that point.

It is important to remember that this was billed as a WCS and advanced jive weekend and there were advanced jive lessons there as well. I did think that the Jivers got a bit of a poor deal when it came to the freestyle. Often on my visits to the jive room the music seemed identical in pace and style to that in the WCS room and indeed often used exactly the same tracks. During the WCS competition (which ended about 11:30pm) there was no DJ in the Jive room at all when I looked in. So if you were there for the jive and not the WCS there was nothing for you during the majority of the Saturday evening. If the 2008 event is also going to have a component for advanced jivers then they must be better catered for.

I would love future events to be two day affairs and for there to be more of them (up to three a year). While I do enjoy the lessons with the teachers from America I also think IMHO we have some very talented and able teachers of WCS in this country (who also have success in international competitions) and it seems a shame that they either don’t get asked, or are unable to attend and teach at weekender events as much as their talents warrant.

Hi all, a huge personal thanks to all of you for the support and the cheering at the weekend on the first national WCS competition during the 'Strictly Novice' & 'Jack & Jill'.

We were over the moon with the result having entered to get into the spirit of the event, support it as fully as we could, but had no real expectations.

Some interesting feedback, was regarding our second track on the competition and I quote:
' We couldn't hear it was there a technical problem?'

Our response was: no we think it has a real quiet intro' like first 4 bars, which was tough when you only have a 60 seconds dance, as this equated to about 15% of our dance.

'We have never heard that song before'
We had not either, but thats what competitions about...

    Meanwhile, great stuff from
    Kev & Christine
    Ollie & Manal
    Syd & John ...excellent!

Thanks again we will see you all soon xx.

... What a wonderful weekend... I wont repeat what has already been posted, just wished to add that for me most definately one of the MOST enjoyable weekenders I have had for quite a few years...

Just totally adore WCS and had lots of fun and laughs with everyone there... too many names to mention really, but to name a few....Simon, Brady, Chef, DaveH, Peter, KeithJ, KevF... thank you SO MUCH for making it feel so good!! you make it seem so easy.. all great leads...

All the lovely forumites I managed to catch up with. It was really great to see you all, after such a long break from dancing... I now have got the bug back and am keen to keep persevering with this fabulous dance...

I steered clear of the Jive room on the weekend, purely because I havent yet managed to separate the two...!!! it usually ends up as a mish-mash of both...

Well Done to all the Competitors, your skill and courage overwhelm me.. (I would never have the guts to compete.... )

.. And as for our American Guests... well, words fail me, I was hoarse from cheering at the end of the evening... ABSOLUTELY AWESOME...

Thanks John and Wes... I will definately be back for next years Event. I thoroughly enjoyed it all...

... just trying to catch up on my sleep now...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yes, we do apologise for this, however, there was no DJ in the Jive room because there was no sound system there for him to work with !! As you are aware, quite early in the evening, we had to hurriedly transfer, initially, the mixer during the comps due to a fault that developed with one of the decks, and then later we had to 'purloin' the compatable speakers from the jive room to the ballroom, on the basis that the pleasure of the greater number was more important than that of the few, so, sorry for that, it was regrettable, but we will do better next time.
(The room was up and running again around 12 'ish though!)

I wasn't aware that the problems with the sound system in the competition/main ballroom had to be fixed by using the equipment in the jive room. Now that I do, I understand that it was essential to do that, unfortunate and regretable but essential. Equipment does fail and the nightmare time for it to do so is when you have an expectant public before you and a schedule to keep to.

Re: Weston Super Mare , the event, the results, the aftermath.

If only the weekend had lasted a little longer. It's left me hungry for more.
There was such a nice relaxed atmosphere about the whole thing.
As others have already said the teaching was the best I've encountered. I didn't actually do any of the classes, I just wanted to listen and absorb as much of the info I could. That Robert could have talked about dance for another 10 years if he'd had the chance!

It was great to see other WCSers from around the UK. Taking part in the comps was nerve racking. But how luck was I to end up dancing with Simon first then KevF in the Jack n Jill heats. I was a little disappointed with some of the music choices for the competitions. I thought many of the pairs of tunes were too similar in style and so didn't give the opportunity to show differences. Getting to the final of the Strictly novice with Ollie (Jazzbug ) was way beyond our expectations, the whole spotlight thing was the most nerve racking thing I've done (worse than talking to a bunch of my scientific peers!). It was great to see so many of the Cat, Paul and Lee students do so well! Well done to the French couple (Franck & Dora)
I can't wait for next year now!

Re: Weston Super Mare , the event, the results, the aftermath.

A huge thanks to Jon and Wes for for their vision and inspiration for putting on this event. It was a rare treat to have two WCS couples in Robert and Nicola and Parker and Jessica. The work that was put into the weekend was above and beyond.

A huge thank you to my own dance partner Carron for competing with me although I was unable to do a dancer with so much talent enough justice. Congratulations to everyone who took part. Being a competitor that weekend and being judged I know from first hand how scary it is. Nerves for the competition got the better of me throughout the weekend and I will be looking forward to catching up with dances for alot of people at the rest of this years' events.

Lastly congratulations to Paul and Cat and the other instructors at WSM at the event not only for their placings but being responsible for a great deal of the dancers who came to support and enjoy the weekend. Without the work done week in week out and at workshops throughout the year we would never have been this weekends' event.
