Having own picture as avatar

I did a search to see if this had already been discussed and nothing came back. Can anyone tell me please how instead of one of those pre-set icons you can have you own picture as your avatar?

no problems uploading a profile picture.

You could also end up with a self drawn masterpiece like mine..

ok admittedly Gadget had to touch up some of my work, and he changed some bits.. made me look less like a horse with Pince-nez to a Wolf in shades. but I did all the basic stuff
