Hammersmith Town Hall - demolition or temporary closure?

Built in the 1930's, the Assembly Hall is one of the largest halls in West London. It was specifically designed to provide the maximum of natural light during the day and has one of the finest sprung dance floors in the country. Its superb wood panelled interior measures more than 80 feet long by 60 feet wide (24m wide x 18m long), with a full width stage at one end and a spacious licensed bar at the other.

This is the blurb about the town hall dance floor from the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham's website. Apart from the stiletto holes at the deep end, it really is a beautiful dance floor.

There are all sorts of rumours going round about the closure of the town hall. According to the council's website, the hall will be closed for refurbishment between 1 June and 15 October 2007. That's a good thing if the dance floor itself is to be restored to its former glory.

Much more worrying is the news in the Standard this week that the town hall is to be demolished. It's not clear, however, whether it's just the brutal 1960's structure at the front of the town hall that is to be demolished or the entire town hall.

Does anyone know what is planned? It would be a terrible shame to lose such a great venue.
