    Beauty tips

There's a programme tonight about beauty tips (I'll be out dancing so won't see) - but they have a few preview clips and there is one about hair (17 seconds by Dr. Chris Gummer of Procter & Gamble).

See - BBC - Horizon - Prof Regan's Beauty Parlour

He ends it by saying "......wash it long, wash it straight (and let the water run right through it".

What the *(&% does that mean? Can anyone explain? I'm guessing it's something about how you run your fingers through your hair when washing.

The tip on reducing/avoiding wrinkles (from a consultant) is equally compelling: slap on SPF 15. My tip would be "stay out of the sun".

He means don't get your hair and pile it all up on the top of your head when you get in the shower, or rub your hands together with your hair between them. The best way is (with long hair) let it hang straight down your back when you wash it. - Don't run your fingers through it, either.
My Mum taught my Sister and I to wash our hair by piling it all up - it took me years to figure out that's NOT how it should be done, and there are less painful ways!!

Basically, do everything you can to avoid tangles in wet hair, because your hair is most prone to damage when it's wet.

It's not possible to keep your face out of the sun all the time and the sun does damage all year round, not just when it's hot.

I have used a moisturiser with SPF 15 in it every day for the last 10 years and at 35, I don't have a single line on my face.

So, if you're not to rub your hair, or run your fingers through it, or touch it in any way, how the heck do you actually wash it? Pour shampoo on it, then rinse it off, and hope that somehow this will make your hair cleaner? Think clean thoughts?

Yup, I'm confused too. Can we be provided with detailed instructions?

Ah, I'm so glad it's not just me being confused here!

Oh, and DJ, maybe that's where you've gone wrong? Rubbing your hair between your hands and running your fingers through it when it's wet? Now let this be a warning to everyone!

Pretty much. Of course if you want to take it to extremes, you don't use shampoo at all - just lots of conditioner. Or you can take it FAR too far and not wet it at all - after a while it just gives up on waiting and cleans itself.

If you're gonna wash normally, it's like sanding wood - always with the grain.

I wash my daughters hair the traditional way - piled up on top of her head - the tangles created are... very tangly - maybe that's why she screams the house down?!
