What would you spend £9 billion on?

Is a few weeks of fun and games in 2012 worth it?

I'd buy a new car, house decorated and furnished exactly how I wanted, trust fund for my babe, money in the bank, invest a few million, give what isn't required to Cancer research, or some other worthwhile cause.

Oh and first I'd hold a big party for my pals

I'd spend it of fast men, fast cars, booze and drugs.

The rest, I suppose, I would just waste.

I was thinking that myself - not surprisingly, as it's in the news...

On the one hand, it's a shedload of cash, which would buy hundreds of hospitals, etc - fill in the usual stats here.

On the other hand, it's at least going towards a good aim, and will attract billions more in tourism, private investment, regeneration, and so on.

On the third hand, who's to say the cost won't treble again in 3 years time? Look at how mismanaged Wembley and the Millenium Dome were, look at the Jubilee Line extension, look at how long Crossrail's taken...

    In short, I dunno.

after more surgery, cars, and the usual stuff, I would really like to be that undercover millionaire its on the t.v. at moment where they pretend not to have any money, and then give it away i like to do things like that anyway. just the things I give away an't worth much but they are from the heart its the thought that counts

ho! and I would perhaps go shopping and buy a few clothes I have nothing to wear, I don't suppose I would get any action even with all that cash

Couple of points....the initial projected costs were at best sketchy, considering it is almost impossible to estimate how expensive these things will cost the truth is i`m sure anyone really believed we`d get the vote...... having then got the vote they were all too quick to give a ball park figure that was alwasy going to escalate.....Wembley was delivered on budget but it over ran, it wasn`t mismanaged by anyone, as soon as you put constraints on something that hasn`t been built before then it will always take longer to build.....again no final date should have be given......but as we do have a definate date in which the olympic village etc has to be built by then no expense will be spared....it is a good thing for london and the knock on effect will be felt throughout the country for years to come.....

That's about £150.00 pp in the UK so the question might be better put what would you spend that on.

If paid for only by the population of Greater London that would be £ 1200 pp or £ 700 pp if the general area also paid.

I reckon we should start a petition to get the government to adopt partner dancing as one of their Olympic sports...

I suppose the swimmers could use the English Channel for their events

Only problems I can forsee are:
A few cases of hypothermia due to the temperature
It might stop trade for a few weeks
    - and therefore mess up a few economies

All in all it would probably be much cheaper to build a nice big (pref heated) swimming pool complex

Re: What would you spend £9 billion on?

We are all going to be paying for London's Olympics, through our taxes, and for those foolish enough, through the national lottery.

Funny that if Glasgow gets to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014, it will only be Glasgow and Scotland that will be paying for it.

It's also strange that £9bn is required to run the Olympics, but we can do the Commonwealth Games for under £300m.

Where is all that extra money going?

Errr, well is Scotland building all the facilities required for the commonwealth games from scratch? or overhauling the public transport system? or preparing for as many visitors as the Olympics will bring? Or are the Olympics committee being more realistic about costs that the Commonwealth bidders?

While we're on the subject, if it's our taxes paying for it, how come £1bn is budgeted for VAT? Surely common sense says that makes the budget £8bn doesn't it?
