    Docking compatibility

Apologies if this has been covered before.

I am looking into getting an MP3 player that can store a large number of files. I'm currently looking at the Creative Zen M, but I have a slight concern - does anyone know if the docking port on this is compatible with the Ipod? In other words, can I connect the Zen to docking ports that are used for Ipods?

    Cheers!

Good choice. Of course it's not Ipod compatible. Do you think Apple would want you to be able to use their products with anything that doesn't have their logo on it.

That's what I'm not sure about. The docking station I'm looking at is made by Logitech - odds are it won't work with anything other than Ipods, but you never know...I'll pop into PC World or something and try it out.

    Not really.
Plugged into my Mac at present: inside - 2 gig of non-Apple memory, 500 gig of non-Apple hard-drive.

Outside. 600+ gig of 3rd party hard drives, one Canon camera, one Belkin USB hub, one Logitech mouse, one Tapwave Zodiac, one Phillips monitor, one D-Link router.

Plugged into my iPod - (well - the other way around, really) - one JBL speaker unit, and sporadically, one Numark mixing desk.

    So... yeah. Not really.

I do think it unlikely - unless Logitech have pulled a smart one and managed to make it multi-purpose. Worth checking out though.

Think they have!! I had a look at the logitech website and all of the ipod ones are listed as having an auxilliary input, so should be able to take, with the aid of the right cable, the output from your mp3 players earphone socket. Just don't expect to use the fancier bits, like track changing, with the remote control that some have. Imagine volume should be fine though.

My Logitech speakers, when you change the volume on them, you see it change on the iPod, so there's some iPod <–> speakers magic going on with volume.

But yeah, you'd hope that it would work with an external input – though you'd also expect that external input to have its own volume control, wouldn't you?
