I have never given neg rep and never will, I think it's pathetic. I don't have any fantastic intellectual basis for this (or much else that I say come to that) - it's just the way I feel. OTOH I love getting positive rep as, I am sure, do the vast majority of forumites. Yes, there's an inconsistency there but I don't care. However, I am coming round to the idea that a forum without the rep system at all may be more desirable than one with it.

It is OK for posts on this thread to have no point whatsoever innit?
If you cant beat them....join them.
I only started neg repping when I started getting neg rep myself.
I blame Martin Harper.
I'm sure the futility would have had a higher power if the superscript tags worked ...
I'm not one for negative repping myself, its just annoying, especially when the comments made aren't clear and you genuinely can't understand why someone neg repped you.
I'd never neg rep anyone. A forum is a place where loads of different people meet up. If I really didn't like what some people were saying, then I don't read that thread anymore. Fail that, then the big "X" in the top right hand corner makes it all go away.
I had an important insight some time ago:
You can choose how you feel about (almost) anything.
ie it is you who decide whether to feel mad, sad or glad.
This came from a famous book written by a concentration camp survivor.
I saw the neg reps. I received in my early days as positive - because it helped me to tune in to the forum and it's ways.
At the moment though, I tend to the view that reps as a whole serve no great purpose - perhaps if they were made private - then fine.
At the end of the day, it's all about getting 'strokes' - and neg or pos - we humans just love 'em.
