Can try open office for a free alternative (totally excel compatible and looks very much the same) OpenOffice.org: Home
Okay just bought new tower with Micosoft XP Media edition 2002 on.... no EXCEL.
How do I cheaply get excel onto my tower...?
Not for me I might add far to technical ! but for Mrs Par!
Any suggestions please... I tried Download.com but ended up trying to download a version that is only available to persons with a U.S address

"Totally" compatible? Not quite. Mostly compatible is probably more like it.
It's a good package though.
Did you have a copy of Excel or Microsoft Office with your old PC? In which case, if you have the install disks, you can just reinstall it on your new PC.
Otherwise, you can buy it. There's ways of getting it cheaper than full price – like the OEM version, or the education version.

i use Open Office at work and deal with Word and Excel documents on a daily basis with no problem what so ever. So i would suggest openoffice.org - go get it
yes - i think at work Im the ONLY one that uses Open Office - so all the documents sent to me are from Microsoft Office.
Try it and see, is the best idea.
Yup, generally it will save back to the same format (Excel) but if she creates a document at home make sure she saves it as an Excel document (when you save, or Save As..., you can pick the format).
I've been using OO.o for a while and I think it is fine. I don't tend to use it for CVs etc as I want to make sure that slight differences in layout don't mean I go onto a third page but saying that OO.o can save to PDF which is ideal.
Microsoft said that OO.o is ten years behind Microsoft Office which is fine since how many things extra do I want to do compared to what I could do in Office '97.
The newest builds for OOo on the mac based on OOo 2.1 are for internal use only at the moment I think. They're still working on native universal binaries which were meant to be released in February but have been delayed
