(before we start - I'm male).
Last night at my local jive venue I was asked to do something a little different. Usually at this club I help set up and pack away the sound equipment and also do a little bit of absolute beginners coaching.
The regular lady dance teacher was away, and there was a HUGE excess of guys at the class last night (about 5 or 6 guys spare). So instead of getting one of the regular ladies to dance as the lady demonstrator/teacher, I was asked to fill that spot, thus cutting down on the excess of guys and also furfilling the demonstrator role. Fortunately, I've danced as a follower a few times before so knew the basics, but had never done the moves we did last night as a follower.
I must confess I had a fantastic time. Really enjoyed being the follower and had a good laugh with it. Fortunately the male teacher was my good friend Steve (Feeling Pink and DianaS will know him ) and it was a really good fun class.
So do any other leaders on here often dance as a follower?
I dance as a follow as mauch as poss.
It does sometimes raise an eyebrow when you dance with another male. Especially when I have done it in Bexhill and Hastings where no one had seen it before.
It's all fun.
It's a common question. Here are some of the prior threads and polls on the matter:
Men dancing as followers
Men dancing with men
Dancing as a woman
Grab me for a dance if you see me.
I started dancing as a follower, when some of my lady friends wanted to learn to lead. So I followed for them and gave feedback on their lead.
Now I find dancing as a follower really helps me understand MY lead much better. As I know what it feels like for the follower and how a poor lead can lead to confusion in the follower.
I also have no problems dancing with other guys - amongst other guys, Steve and I do that traditionally at every Warmwell. And yes it is amusing to watch peoples faces when they have never seen two guys dance together.
I have a video of two guys dancing together in my dance collection. I took it at Warmwell as one of the guys is a mate of mine. They did a fantastic dance as well.
I have just started dancing as a follow (like only a few times so far). Seeing things from the other side really helps you to understand how to lead better. Every lead should have a try at following
Yeah, i haven't done any proper following at all but think that seeing both sides of anything will always help. Only time i have followed was when one woman in an intermediate class was backleading way ahead of the beat. I tried slowing her down but she wasn't having it so i just let her backlead - was a bit weird but was quite enlightening
Jamie and CrentrAlex are two of the best follower I have ever seen
Tonight Mathew, I'm going to be... a lady!
I know someone who can give you a few pointers.
I usually follow more than I lead. It's so much more fun!
For the first time ever, I did a beginners lesson as a man last night.
I loved it.
I also have a new found respect for leaders.....my brain hurts.
Why would anyone not follow? Its such fun and a real change. I've even been known to follow when I should be leading. Still find it hard to swap mid dance though.
A lady - me - no don't think so, follow may be - lady hmmmmm - No never been called that before!!
well - i'm a lead, and i have learnt to follow in the last two/three months - and yes it is so much fun - i just love trying (not trying not actually pulling it off) to spin, i managed triples on sat - yay me!!
I'm not overly keen on the drops yet, and i did my first air steps as a follow on sat night with Blueshoes , he made it so easy. Then last night - Ken did a sumasault with me - what's that all about??
Having started to follow has dramatically changed my lead though - hopefully for the better!!
One of the funniest things is dancing with Jamie, and doing a sabotage dance, where we just keep changing the lead, people watching get really confused!!
Or of course its so funny to see the look on people's face's when i we do airstep/deep drops, me leading and either CentrAlex or Jamie following (or both when we do double trouble!!)
