I vote with straycat on this:

A checkup might show you are a bit short on something - eg some of the B vitamins or Vitamin C, zinc, iron, calcium or selenium are just a few that help with immunity and absorbtion of other nutrients...

As a result even if you do up your (healthy) food intake then you might not be using it all to the best that your body could. Apparently nuts although fatty are fatty in a good way (Omega 3!) and as well as having the calcium and other trace elements they are a very good way of taking in proteins

Cheers and hope the lengthy blather helps

Or you could eat lots of Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wa) I have been "reliably informed" that "the United Nations has classified it as a supercrop for its very high protein content (12-18%). Unlike wheat or rice (which are low in lysine), quinoa contains a balanced set of essential amino acids for humans, making it an unusually complete foodstuff. This means it takes less quinoa protein to meet one's needs than wheat protein. It is a good source of dietary fiber and phosphorus and is high in magnesium and iron. Quinoa is also gluten free and considered easy to digest. Because of all these characteristics, quinoa is being considered as a possible crop in NASA's Controlled Ecological Life Support System for long-duration manned space flights"

and if anyone asks... a vegetarian told me (thanks hunny!)

Re: Tips for PUTTING ON weight...?

I went to my GP about my weight once, knowing full well that I need to eat loads just to keep going, because I have such a high metabolism. She did a full health check up (and several blood tests) and found nothing wrong with me.

Gaining muscle just to fool the scales seems to me to be a bit pointless. Getting fit is good for you, yes. You dance, so you'll be fitter than most people anyway. And from the sounds of things, excerise is not something you lack. So if you eat lots, exercise lots and you're perfectly healthy, then there should be no reason to panic. My GPs are always getting warning signs on their computers about my weight, but they've all said the same thing... I am fit, healthy and active. There should be no reason to do anything different.

If you have lost a lot of weight due to illness, then you should put it on again quite quickly. Eat well and don't go on any sudden fad diets. Your body should sort itself out naturally. Mine does. I used to loose a lot of weight during exams times. Stress led me to loose half a stone during my A Levels. I put it on again in about 6 months.

My brother is also very thin. We are a family with a high metabolic rate. We're naturally very active people. We are not a medical emergency just because we are thinner than average. Afterall, we can't all be 'average'. And if we are healthy, then we shouldn't try to be.

    My two pennies worth :-)

Re: Tips for PUTTING ON weight...?

First of all - check your metabolic rate.

There are various calculators on the web - eg. this one:
    http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

Then you will discover (depending on your activity level - which you input in different ways, depending on the calculator) how many calories you need per day - just to maintain your current weight.

Bearing in mind the 1lb of extra weight is about 3500 calories, you will have to eat an extra 500 cals per day above your 'base' level to put on 1lb per week (other things being equal).

Once you know all this, then you could go into counting the calories if you really want to do it properly. (And take account of some of the good nutrition advice previously posted).

Remember also that dancing (according to different web sites) will burn about 300 calories per hour when you are full on (this is probably when dancing non-stop to 'Hanky Panky').

As someone else said I think - it's basically about input-output.

According to the Body Fat Calculator, I am 0.2% away from being Obese. Apparently 31% is the top end of "acceptable" body fat percentage, but 32% is officially obese. I am 31.8%.

    I am obese.

    Apparently.

Don't worry about that Genie. Body fat calculators are notoriously bad at deciding if someone is obese or not. They make way too many assumptions based on age, sex, height, build and level of exercise, but not enough actual measuring of body fat. The percentage it gave you is so innaccurate as to be virtually worthless.

I put on 3/4 of a stone from munching on pumpkin seeds - they make your hair and nails grow like fury too! Warning - they are addictive!

Of course, the fact that I dance 6-7 nights a week doesn't help!

What with Southport (ONLY 1 SLEEP AWAY) around the corner, I'm gonna need all the fat resources I can gather...

    Help?
Try using Myoplex - EAS Myoplex nutrition & Sports Supplements - I used to take it when I did weight-training and I managed to get up to 14 stone using it. Also, have you tried lifting weights? Boring and repetitive I know, but it's a good way to pack on some pounds if you're naturally very lean. I did experiment with creatine when I was in my weights phase, and it makes you bulk up pretty quickly. Unfortunately, dancing seems to be the best way known to man of losing muscle mass and making you thin!

I used to be classed as underweight, but was happy with my body. Now I am probably classed as normal and hate it, I look pregnant!

To gain weight I would reccommend deep fried mars bars, no exercise and lots of alchohol ( its very fattening) try a mixture of Irelands best, baileys and guiness.

If I was you I would go and see my doctor and get a blood test done. You could very well have an overactive Thyroid which would mean your metabolic rate goes into overdrive.

Last year I had severe food poinsoning and afterwards I was diagnosed with a overactive Thyroid. There is no "link" as such between the two, but its proven that if either you or your body is going through a lot of stress peeps can often get an overactive Thyroid/Graves decease.

I lost 2 stones in 6 months, not very fun

But back to the tips on putting on weight. I've got a plan I got from the specialist to regain weight, I'll try and find it if you are interested.

I can remember eating a lot of high fat and high calorie food, think avocado, nuts and seeds, red meat, pasta and rice.

Jamie you lucky little sod you. If you are slim dont worry about it my son---you are an active and healthy young man.

Enjoy this time of eating like a horse and not putting on weight, because when you reach 40 (which i nearly am by the way), everything catches up with you and you wake up one day and find your a fat b*stard.

Enjoy your freedom to eat what you like, try guiness and cream cakes and all the lovely stuff us oldies only dream of.

Get stuck in my lovely and fill your face.

Not much fun for those who don't want to but I'm sorry, it sounds quite appealing to me!
