Question The best place you've been on holiday is...?

OK, I'm not necessarily asking about the best holiday you've ever had (because that might be for reasons other than the location you chose to go to) but I was wondering what do you think is the best place to go on holiday and why?

As someone who doesn't have to worry about taking kids away I'd have to say that in Europe I'd go for Italy in general and Florence in particular - because the weather can be great, the food is superb and there're so many interesting places to see, plus it's not too far on the plane. i'm not really one for clubbing and night life though, so the nice restaurants and strolling around seeing the sights by night is a nice evening's entertainment for me (those of you who prefer clubs and bars may think differently).
Outside Europe it may sound cliche but Las Vegas is fantastic! Completely different in terms of culture but again great food and weather and so many things to see and do. Some of the best shows and live acts, great shopping and you can even take a helecopter ride down into the Grand Canyon!

So, where are your favourite holiday destinations?

I loved Germany, especially Bavaria. Great for outdoor pursuits like skiing, mountain climbing, maountain biking etc.

    Amsterdam...

    Lovely architecture, friendly people (mostly)

Steer clear of the seedier side of the 'Dam and take in the parks , galleries and museums. And a Boat taxi tour with guide is always worth the money. It shows you the sights, gives you a little local info and gets you from A to B

lot of drugged up and drunk "beggars" some can be quite intimidating and threatening.. oh yeah and avoid areas were gangs of drunk British Stag and hen do's frequent. Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be a Brit.

it has to be Orlando in Florida!! as lots of things to do and gorgeous sun!! i loved it so much, and would gladly go back again. The food were huge and good value for money!!

Magaluf in Spain is good in May as not so many youngsters coming to clubbing etc, I didnt go clubbing at all in magaluf, just strolled around and chilled out in pubs , played pool. Loved the beach although!

It has to be Sweden. Beautiful, civilised, efficient, cutlural, and not expensive nowadays. Stockholm is great for pizza and ice cream addicts too. (Far better than Venice.) Be prepared for it to be sweltering in summer though.

If it was best summer holidays, then Wales comes a close second (OK I was lucky with the weather, sunshine for 13 days out of 14!) Or France, the Yorkshire Dales, New Zealand.

    And worst so far, Turkey.

But it all depends on what you want out of a holiday...

I don't have a favourite as such, but 3 places i really enjoy going to are,

San Francisco, absolutely love it there, fortunate enough to have to go there 3 to 6 times a year for work.

France, had a great 2 week driving holiday down to the south of France the year before last. Scenery is stunning and the weather is lovely. A very good Friend of mine ( he is also my lodger now, whilst he works in the UK) has a house in the Loire valley so i get to go there several times a year and this year i am having my 30th birthday party there.

Germany, only visited parts north of hamburg and the region around Nurnberg but i throughly enjoy all of it. The people are friendly and superb scenery. Best bit, i get to go there for work too. This week i have to drive to nurnberg for a trade fair, such a shame having to drive on the autobahns. Will have to try and keep the speed down a little more this year, 300 miles at 130mph soon gobbles the fuel , but then thats what expense accounts are for.

Re: The best place you've been on holiday is...?

The most refreshing place i've been to is Cuba but not Havana, Varadaro, Santiago or any of the other commercialised places. (I have been to the above and had a good time but nothing compared to the experience below)

Where I went was fairly remote, there were only 3 complexes on one very long and beautiful beach, of which were indeed luxury but once outside, we were in a totally different world.

We were lucky enough to hire a private guide (which was cheaper than one might imagine) and he took us to places so remote, (4hours drive) the people had never even seen blonde hair. Myself, my daughter and sister-in-law all have long blonde hair and we were greeted as though we were non threatening, very amusing and welcomed aliens.

The houses had no doors or windows, but there's no need, as it never gets cold, even at night and they have nothing to steal.

Everyone seems happy, regardless of their relative poverty. They live in blissful ignorance of the 'greed and need' culture of the western world. No TV, no newspapers, no shops, no fashion, no electricity and no stress!

Their lives are so simple..they bathe and fish in the river, pick fruit from the trees, they shared their homes with the animals which will later feed them, they get up when the sun rises and go to bed, when it sets! Material wealth isn't even conceived!

There are no dangerous animals or insects to live in fear of in Cuba and the land is lush and fertile

No, I wouldn't want to live there but as a holiday it was brilliant antidote to everyday life in London!

Quaffing down chilled beers (and pina colladas for Mrs Par) sitting on the balcony, of the cable car building on the top of table mountain on a sunny afternoon...... fabulous vistas all around ....... it feels timeless up there

I think that probably the holiday I remember as being the best, was a Dance and Ski trip to Courcheval. In 2001 I think. The weather was absolutely perfect, the snow was perfect, the dancing was perfect. It wasn't bad really....

Though, I do enjoy the trips down under each year. Especially last year to the South Island of NZ.

Re: The best place you've been on holiday is...?

Probably would have to say that the best place for a variety of reasons, namely meeting my cousins for the first time, the time of year being new year. The weather great and the city great would have to be New York or even Newburgh a suburb of New York.

Stay at my cousins house on the Hudson River,Snow was white. My cousins friends farm was fantastic and all the decorations were still up(Showing us how to do it).

Going up Empire States building and generall just taking in all the atmosphere.

So much so that I am going back there this year.

    Thanks for the thread

San Francisco has a lot to offer, including great shopping, delicious seafood - especially down by the piers which are quite entertaining (esecially the sea lions!), boat trips to Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge, China Town and the trams... but my top tip for anyone going to SF is this:
Get dressed up and go to the Fairmont Hotel and downstairs there's a room called 'The Tonga Room'; it's a cocktail bar all decked out like a tropical rain forest (with real rain!) and there's a band and singer and a DANCE FLOOR! It's THE place to be, what a fab night I had there. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I'm still a huge fan of the British seaside - I've been to lots of unusual and iconic places around the world, but I have such fond memories of holidays on the beach in the UK.

Can anyone beat an afternoon making sandcastles on the beach... construction of a huge sand wall around your castle, and waiting for the tide waves to finally overtop and wash everything away. (With some sand covered ice-cream involved somewhere along the line as well!)

Haven't ben very far around the globe - but so far Mull and Iona with friends - stunning weather you have the beaches with glorious aquamarine blue water, and if you get rain then drive through the mountains and look at the stunning waterfalls. Ah happy days
