The civil rights movement in the US led to the creation of the horribly ugly 'African American' label - but they have nothing for the mexicans, the japanese, the chinese, the koreans, the indians, the pakistanis and so forth who have poured into the country since 1945.

I think they're all, collectively, known as 'Asian Americans' - which must be much more offensive (for example, the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans don't exactly like each other a lot) than being named by individual countries of origin, but maybe that's just my perception. Ooh, apart from the Mexicans, who are generally known as 'frickin' Mexicans'.
