    Car Purchasing Question....

    Hi y'all,

I'm just about to buy a new car from a car supermarket. They sell new cars far cheaper than the dealers. (www.buyacar.co.uk - in Chiswick)

The one catch seems to be that you have to wait 6 months before the manufacturer will release the log book to you (and you'll be the 2nd registered owner as it is initially registerd to buyacar).

Buyacar say that this is to stop me selling the car on for a profit (I am indeed buying it for over 6 grand under the RRP).

Is this legit? Might there be problems with getting insurance without the log book?

    Any advice from anyone?

    Cheers,

    Will

That is quite odd really! Have you checked on the web that you can't get the same thing for the same price (without log book issues). I found mine on the web on a website that pointed me to a dealership in Oxford. Ended up being about £4-5K below the RRP (and it is only a smart car!).
Think I got there through this website www.savemoneyoncars.co.uk/

I've not heard of not getting the log book (which is the proof of ownership, after all) when you buy a car - that sounds weird to me, but I've no idea what the implications are. If you're the owner, you get the registration certificate - otherwise how can you prove you're the owner, for example in case of accident etc.?

This "no-sell-on" thing sounds like an excuse, so possibly it's a legal requirement on them rather than anything.

Although I assume that, effectively, it'll be treated as second-hand rather than new, as it'll have 2 names on the log book? That's presumably another reason why it's cheaper - and it'll affect the sell-on value of course.

    Re: Car Purchasing Question....

Looking through the terms and conditions, the only mention of the registration document I can see is:

5.6 If you exercise your right to cancel an Order after Delivery of the Car pursuant to Clause 5.4 or Clause 5.5, then:
    ...
    5.6.4 you must when the Car is returned or collected provide to us the keys, V5 registration document and all other documentation and items supplied with the Car;
So that seems to indicate that the registration document is supplied with the car - you can't return it if you don't have it in the first place

I'd definitely query that "condition", it sounds highly dodgy to me (that's my expert legal opinion )

    Thanks for your input guys.....

Just got the order form through, and it says that "Your name will appear as the first registered owner".

I rang them back as this seemed inconsistent with what I'd been told on the phone. They said that I would be the first registered owner, I would get the V5 registration document sent to me by the DVLA straight away (without a 6 month wait), and that I'd been mis-advised by the previous salesman.

Is the V5 registration document and the log book the same thing or not?

Yeah, he was talking cobblers in other words.

Shock, horror, salesman doesn't know what he's talking about...

Not withstanding the fact that any NIPs (speeding fines) would go to the registered keeper (ie them) first!

Have heard this mentioned before when buying from large car supermarkets but as DJ says, it appears to be salesmen talking out of their arse. Am very tempted to buy my next car through Autobytel to save a bit. Just trying to decide what I want next!

Oh and if I can afford it once I buy a flat

There haven't been 'log books' with cars for at least 30 years! Same with 'road fund licences'.

You've upset it now. It's very politically incorrect of you! All punctuation is wanted - for all you know somebody somewhere has been trying to have an apostrophe for ages...

Look out for cars described as 'light water damage'!

I have actually heard this before...........

I believe it may be something to do with avoiding new car taxation.
