I dont think the 1830's was particularly known for its romantic fashions - and the 1880's ? This would be the time of Sherlock Holmes - all top hats and big skirts - whats so wrong with that ?

Fletch, I didn't say I was well dressed (that line was just 'a line'). In fact, I've stated elsewhere on this forum that I'm - I think the line was - "a scruffy little bleeder". I also wear weird items which other people hate; I know other people hate them, but I love them and I don't give a toss what other people think. Vive la difference.

I do also have an interest in fashion, both contemporary and historical, so I take an interest; most people can name a few fashion items that they loathe and I did state at the beginning that the thread wasn't entirely serious.

1830's: massive leg o' mutton sleeves, silly hair, ludicrous hats; grown women dressing like silly little girls. I read somewhere that the period from 1825-40 is the least documented in fashion history - that's probably because it was cack.

1880's: bustles - and I like a good bustle, but - sticking out at right angles from the lady's butt to the extent that you could probably balance a loaded tea tray on it, new chemical dyes resulting in some pretty hideous colour schemes, and those nasty little curly fringes. Ugh.

I admit to not being so hot on the men's fashions.

    1. White stilettos, black or blue Ron Hills (running trousers) and a silver or gold puffer jackets - Typically seen around Army Officers quarters.

    2. Anything that you've worn just because others say so

I almost always wear plain black or white T-shirts or polo shirts, plain baggy beige trousers, plain black trackies (zip off at 3/4 in case I get too hot) or plain black trousers. Boring and plain, but it's what I'm comfortable in and I don't wear it for anyone else's benefit.

I was almost tempted to rush out and buy some white shirts just because you laydeez seem to love them so much, but the last time I danced in a shirt it was really uncomfortable so that ain't gonna happen.

It's a nightmare trying to find stuff that's good to dance in.

No, Officers have always dressed like that. It's just that it's more likely you'll see them dressed like that outside of the Officers mess nowadays.

    Re: Top Ten Fashion Crimes

    My top 10...

    1. Socks in open toe shoes (unless you want to look like a middle aged German tourist on a beach resort in the south of France ...)
    2. Any set of 2 (or more ) pieces of striped clothes worn together, bonus points if there's one horizontal, one vertical
    3. Handbag in a colour that's nowhere else in your outfit
    4. black and dark blue together (unless dark blue trousers and black shoes, for men)
    5. pink and red together (yeah I know it seems to be fashionable this year... )
    6. tights with boxers-like demarcation and a mini-skirt
    7. fake tan
    8. black underwear under white clothes
    9. for men: any sort of printed underwear, even worse if from cartoons etc - just realised it also goes for women actually
    10. Doing too much to try and look super-fashion, and ending up looking like a tramp

Oh my God! You kept those well hidden when I was up there! I know you told me, but the sight is something else. Can whoever put sunglasses indoors please take it off their list as I might be obliged to wear them...

Can't think of 10 items at the mo (should be working ), but here's one to be going on with:

Pop socks with skirts. Why? We can all see that they only go up to your knees unless you're wearing an ankle-length skirt. And I hear that they cause varicose veins.

*Dylon, can I please take urgent delivery of 10 packets of Deepest Black machine dye? Yes, to be delivered by 29th December. Thanks - you're a life saver!*

    (Speaking to the guys, mostly...)

By the time a handful of women have all listed their 10 crimes, all we will be able to do is skulk in the garden shed with a copy of Geoff Hamilton's biography...
