    I think "marriage" is a fair label for it no matter what it is legally defined as. As you say, it has almost all, if not all the same properties.

    What is a registry office marriage that is performed without any religious connotations? I struggle to see a difference between a civil partnership and a partnership agreed in a civil ceremony.

    I think the only difference is that the law doesnt call it "marriage" even if it is the same thing, I think that is what theTramp was pedantically referring to.

    Yeah, but everyone's calling it marriage, so it's pretty irrelevant.

    And if you didn't say "they got married", what would you say? "They got civil partnerized"?

    Anyway, I thought this week's Torchwood was good - "Fight Club" with aliens, plus people (Gwen and Owen) getting seriously and unpredictably nutty - excellent stuff.
