It's a funny thing...

I suppose a lot of us have large amounts of MP3 (or similar) files.

I've just upgraded to WMP11, and been tidying up my recent acquisitions.

What puzzles and amuses me is the lengths to which the original rippers (or whoever) go to to avoid using the word 'Pop' in the genre field. It's like pop is something shameful, that serious music has to have a more important label, like 'Rock', or 'Progressive', and so forth. You know when you find songs like those of Art Garfunkel's Bright eyes LP labelled 'General rock' (General rock? what the hell is that?!!) and Carole King's Tapestry categorised as 'Folk rock' that you are dealing with people who have a serious chip on their shoulder. Other groups labelled 'rock' of some kind: Blondie, Go-gos, Police, Squeeze, ****ney rebel, the Undertones, XTC...the list goes on.

What is it that makes people so anxious to avoid the label 'pop'? "Hey...I'm too serious about mah music to be into pop."

There is a genre 'rock/pop', which strikes me as defining music so broadly as to be not worth bothering with. Although I suppose somewhere there may be somebody with a huge jazz collection with just a few non-jazz tracks which he doesn't want to define.

Finally, my all time favourite "Classic rock". I can't explain why I find that so pathetic. What does that make the rest? "Not-very-significant rock"?
