I believe he (David James) also stated that 'abuse and personal attacks would not be tolerated there (the proposed Boiler Room) either'.
    (My italics)
In that case, not much point having a separate Boiler Room. As I've said, I don't have a problem with controversial - and we're all adults. But there's a difference between disagreement with someone's point of view and personal nastiness.

    Re: "Boiler room" area?

I don't think there's any place for flame wars and the like on the forum. Petty bickering and continual one-upmanship point scoring don't really add anything to the forum IMHO (and only IMHO)

If things get heated (as they probably will regardless) then we already have the outside area where the thread can be taken.

There's nothing wrong with debate and criticism as long as it's civil and constructive.

Having just the new Forum Rules I'd now go with not needing a Boiler Room.

    Here's to the future

Blimey, if you gave me 5 seconds I'd have said why - because, duh, the topic was relevant to the "forum rules" thread more than to the "Boiler room" thread. In other words, I wanted your contribution to be expressed in that debate, not lost in this one. But that's OK, don't thank me or nothing, I don't care.

I'm also now going with the clear majority in thinking that the "Boiler room" is a dumb idea now - hey, it's partially my idea, I can call it dumb if I want.

Unless someone comes up with a compelling argument, I think we should class this as a "no".

The comment was aimed directly at the bolier room as the forum rules makes such a thread reduntant

As a famous engineer once said "the more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drains". How about a Warm Zone, Tepid Zone, Ned Flanders Zone as well?

I think there are way too many Forum sections as it is.
Much as I sympathise with the moderators I think there is a real danger of overdoing it. Especially DJ - the man just can't stop messing.

To be fair to DJ (well, someone has to be....!)

He may just be implementing the new guidelines that all moderators have to abide by.

It's just that he seems to be doing it all, since he's on the forum approximately 5.6 times as long as all the other moderators put together!

Ah, but if you look at profiles, it shows posts per day - and your 11.63 is quite a lot more than Trampy's 6.17.

And your posts, on average, have more words in them. Not that I've counted or anything.

Yeah. Well, I was going to say that. And he can't help it if he takes 100 words, when 10 would do!

Oh. Look. If you're a lawyer, and you're being paid to write stuff, by the word, then it's different. Then you take 100 words, when 10 would do.

I assume that it's somewhat similar in technical writing*.

*Or whatever it is that DJ actually does in the 7 minutes per day that he's not on here!

Good point. Thanks for explaining that Trampy, good job you're not articled yet (or whatever it is that solicitors are) otherwise that would have cost me £397 + expenses. Phew.
