computer speakers with absolutely no sound!!

    Sorry I'm back....

Yesterday my Ipod arrived and I started using Itunes to put music on my Ipod.

All went swimmingly well I can now hear all the music I have transferred from CDs and the odd new purchase on my Ipod.

But I left for work yesterday having been listening to lots of samples from the Itunes store and the speakers on my PC were working perfectly.

When I got home I could not get Itunes to play any music through the speakers! But music could be heard if I used music match!!!!

I had a glass or 2 of red wine and went to bed.

Now this morning I have rebooted the computer, I have tried playing music on itunes and also via music match, I have tried to view you tube videos and without exception I cannot get any sound out of my speakers.

They are still connected and the power light is brightly illuminating my sad life here in geek world again

Any one got any ideas ????

The strange thing was last night it wouldn't play Itune music but it would musicmatch and now nothing this morning

The positive is I have my Ipod blasting out my ears at the moment but I don't know where to start other than the obvious buy new speakers before any smart@rse suggests it!!!!

I would suggest that something narsty might have happened to your sound drivers. From what you describe, I would consider it extremely unlikely that you have a problem with the speakers - or any kind of hardware problem.

Try re-installing the latest verison of your sound drivers, as a no-cost, easy first stab at sorting it out. If you need help on doing this.... then - um - I'm sure one of the more PC-savvy folk can help (I always work out this kind of thing as I go along, which means I'm particularly bad at explaining it....)

[EDIT] Do this after checking out Witty's suggestion

Hi Paul, I'm afraid I have no idea what's causing your speaker problems, but your plight has reminded me of a similar problem I had a couple of years ago...Mine was definitely a 'hardware' problem.

My PC speakers completely stopped working, it was a few days before I bothered to bend down and check the cables were plugged in at the back.

When I checked the cables I saw that they were completely chewed through.

That's when I remembered that a few days earlier the baby rabbit had got into the study and run around a bit before being escorted out. It only takes a few seconds.

    Naughty rabbit.

A simple test: Can you connect your PC speakers to a walkman (or your Nano) to test them? I know my portable CD player can connect to my PC's subwoofer and speakers using a 3.5mm male/male jack cable.

    fixed it !!! fixed it

Don't ask me how! but when I found the "volume Control" button on the bottom right of taskbar and opened it up I moved some of the sliders and wwayhay sound.

Now I know I've never ever seen that thing before so I must look for a rabbit or have a word with Mrs Par or my son

    Alls well that ends well

Thankyou all for your efforts (except ESG!!)

    Hence you'd muted it

Mr.Par some audio programs volume controls are tied into the whole PCs volume control. So if you turn down the volume in one, it would explain no sound when using another. Try it again with iTunes and see if it does it again

    1. Because Ipods are cack, expensive, unrobust, rubbish.
    2. Because everyone uses Itunes just because they know the name or its been bundled with their cacky Ipod.
    3. Because the copy protection is awfull No one but Apple is allowed to make players for iTunes Music Store songs, and no one but Apple can sell you proprietary file-format music that will play on the iPod.
    4. It's made by Apple

I don't use iTunes due to it's name or because I own an iPod, but then I own a Mac, so I might have different reasons for using it.

Anyway, I don't actually see a reason for not using iTunes in your list of reasons why you don't like it.

I'd be interested in hearing why you think the iPod is "cack, expensive, unrobust, rubbish", as most of the music player-buying public seem to disagree with you.

Re: computer speakers with absolutely no sound!!

I thin k they are cack, expensive, unrobust and rubbish because compared to other players, they are cack, expensive, unrobust and rubbish.

Ipods are what they are because they are mass marketed. Celebs are given them free so they become a must have. They have done soooo much advertising that people assume an Ipod is they only MP3 player on the market.

How many kids want an Ipod because they don't know that there are 10 odd better alternatives out there?

What made you choose an Ipod over the much better, yet cheaper Zen?

Re: computer speakers with absolutely no sound!!

having previously used both music match and windows media player to organise my music I must say I find Itunes to be as good if not better.

I also find the ease of transfer of music to the Ipod make it a vastly superior system for my limited experience of these MP3 player things.

The way Itunes makes up play lists and have smart playlists that pick up on dates, genre, artist album etc has also made the organisation and administrating my music so simple.

But I am a novice in these matters....

As someone who has always advised against buying an iPod when there are better, cheaper players out there, I can agree with the expensive bit. However the design of the iPod is by far the best of any mp3 player i've seen. And the ease of use if you use iTunes is pretty top notch too. I still wouldn't waste my money on one but I'd happily take one if they were giving them away
