Scottish Television (STV) - New Dating show - Contestants wanted!

Just got a call from an STV researcher looking for people to appear in their new show. Here's the info from STV:

We are holding open auditions at the STV studios in Glasgow next Wednesday 8th November from 5-6pm so anyone that is interested can come along. Our studios are down on the Clyde, just beside the new squinty bridge. We are on the same side as the Glasgow Science Centre and the new BBC building. The exact address is Pacific Quay, Glasgow, G51 1PQ.

What's a squinty bridge? Is that some sort of Scottish term?

    It's a bridge that's squint.

(Ask LemonCake – she helped build it. )

(Is the way we use "squint" different from the rest of the world? If a picture is hanging on the wall squint, don't you say it's squint? )

Oi! It's not 'squinty', it's asymmetric. And rather beautiful with it. (Not that I'm biased or anything )

Before you assume I had anything useful to do with designing or building it, I freely admit that my most constructive contribution to the project was the steady supply of lemon cake, banana loaf, chocolate brownies and carrot cake that kept the project manager, foremen and workmen happily fed

It's not just asymmetric – it could still be asymmetric and not be squint.

The arch and cables are positioned asymmetrically, sure... But it's the fact that it doesn't cross the river at right-angles to the direction of the river flow, and perpendicular to the banks, that makes it squinty.

But I agree, it is rather beautiful. (Though I've only ever seen glimpses of it so far.)

    Squinty Bridge

It looks very like the Millennium Bridge between Newcastle & Gateshead - is it a clone of that one?

Yep! Squint to me just means straining to look at something through half closed eyes.

Nope! I'd say it was crooked or skewiff.

Not really - in fact not at all when you see them from a raised elevation! First of all it's a road bridge, also the supporting arch starts on one side of the road and ends on the other (so in a way it's doubly squint). Finally it's fixed - the Gateshead Millennium Bridge can tilt up to allow boats through.

Ironic you should say that, though. There were plans recently to build a pedestrian bridge further upstream on the Clyde - which were cancelled in part because it looked like a clone of the Tyne 'eyelid'.

Just checked my Shorter Oxford dictionary, and sure enough, "squint", meaning "out of alignment" is "now chiefly Scottish."

    Never realised that.

And 'squint' is also a medical term, for when eyes are out of alignment too

STV's new dating show is called Club Cupid and is currently being shown on STV. We are looking for more contestants for the show and are searching for men and women of all ages and sexuality to take part. Contestants must be over 18
...and are pretty much bound to win if they turn up with a pint of heavy and a pie...especially the blokes...

The squinty bridge is a fantastic new bridge.Having the pleasure to be there on the opening night and using it every now and then. Also lovely lit up at night, joining the science centre and the secc.

It is very squinty in more than one way. Top to bottom and side to side.

Ps what was this thread about again????
