    More improbable stuff

Heard Lord Taverne speaking on R4 this morning on today's Lord's Debate on why a bunch of herberts in the civil service changed regulations so that homeopathic remedies can lawfully claim to treat certain illnesses. Despite a complete absence of any plausible theory of how they work.

Anyway, reading about it in Google News and I came across this, in the US publication Business Week:

"The consequences for the U.S. are disturbing. This nation spends 2 1/2 times as much as any other country per person on health care. Yet middle-aged Americans are in far worse health than their British counterparts, who spend less than half as much and practice less intensive medicine, according to a new study."

Can this be the benighted health service, the efficientcy of which everyone from Blair rightwards (stop sniggering at the back; he's a Labour prime minister after all) complains about, and consequently subjects it to almost weekly overhauls?

It's about time we recognised that not even the world's most enormous and profitable companies are much better than 50% efficient, and recognise the health service for what it could be, if only politicians could be prevented from tinkering with it - simply astonishing.
