Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
This is a thread intended to gather details of the progress of the chalet improvements at Southport.
Had your chalet been improved in any way? If so what exactly had been done in terms of new decor, improvements, replacement furniture, carpets etc? What do you think still needed to be done to your chalet to make the refurbishment complete? Did you have a problem with your chalet and if so how well or badly did Pontins do in terms of sorting it out?
Post your details here.
Please can you add if you had Free electricity and the number of your chalet, so we can cross reference next time :-)

Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
Budget chalet. Had been improved.
What had been done;
- All woodwork freshly painted
- Ceilings replaced or repainted
- Carpet in living area removed and replaced by some admittedly not very nice fabric floor tiles
- Completely new shower surround and new shower curtain
- Toilet and washbasin also fairly new
- New fridge
- Some Kitchen cupboards possibly repaired or replaced
- New curtains on all windows
- All the walls had been repainted
- Largish kitchen waste bin provided
- Nice new saucepan with a glass lid and a new frying pan
- New extendable wooden table
What hadn't been done;
- Same old manky soafabed
- Same old plastic stacking chairs
- Same wardrobes (but in our chalet these were fine)
- Same old very small TV but at least it worked
- Still no toilet roll holder (why?)
- No new carpet in bedroom
- Same old beds
Everything in our chalet worked as it should (cooker, heaters, shower etc) We did go to the Pontins desk because we had a problem with the plug in the kitchen sink and they sent a maintenance man round within 5 minutes to sort it out.
Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
Improvements in our budget chalet as follows ;
new beds and bedding (as in a post elsewhere, beds not made up so we assumed that was so we could see they were new!)
Walls, doors and all paintwork had been painted.
Nothing else changed, same scrappy curtains, cutlery, crockery, kitchen equipment and fridge, manky sofa bed, no changes to bathroom, no plug in kitchen sink, waste bin in kitchen smaller than my waste paper basket at work.
Oddly, they seem to be doing a bit of something everywhere, so eventually, in a couple of years, maybe all the chalets will have had everything refurbished!
Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
CLUB - No 74
New Beds - BUT un-made
No Shower Gel
No Kitchen pack
No Towel rail
No hooks on door
No bathroom lock
No Mirrors in bedrooms
No power points in bedrooms
No Mugs (unlike Camber)
No Grill pan
No Toaster
Dirty Carpets
Dirty Saucepans,
Free Electricity - Which apparently some Budget chalets had
Microwave
So I'm now struggling to see what extra I got for my money?

:yeah:
I think I can tick most of those too, but some chalets got mugs, we got shower gel but no soap for basin and we did get a toaster.
The main difference was we got towels ........... but most of us bring our own anyway

I'm not sure if they still do it but you used to be able to get towels for the whole chalet for £5 plus a returnable deposit
So for £5, that's sorted!
Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
BTW did anyone have lids to their saucepans ? Or if they did, did they fit their saucepans ???
Why would anyone want to steal saucepan lids if they don't, why/how do they go missing ?????

I'm never sure if this is deliberate or just a case of faulty meters?
The chalet I was in (Budget) had one too, but I've seen this a few times over the years - I think it's just the luck of the draw.
Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
Most comfortable sleeps ive ever had at a weekender. The new mattresses made such a big difference plus our room was at the back and not front which meant the walkway didn't disturb us. It was great... beds together to make a nice double with one of our comfy big quilts to lay on as well, brill !!
Shower ok, decor pretty awful, dont think they had done that yet, damp around windows still evident and of course the wooden floor was filthy.
Beds were not made and there was no welcome pack as usual but sis brought us a nice sponge and washing up liquid so that was ok.
But, because when i did sleep i could sleep well, the whole weekend was improved.

Club Chalet 14.
Had never been before so didnt know what to expect and cant really compare to previous but a few points i could make.
Had tiny cups, which bigger mugs would have been better
Microwave and Kettle didnt work on arrival, although replaced on sat afternoon.
Carpet a bit grubby
No power sockets in bedrooms,
Shower that ya dont have to keep pressing every 20 seconds to keep water flowing would be nice
Apart from above, was ok

Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
We stayed in Club and the first one we were allocated was awful had water dripping outside that had come in through the rotting frames and flooded the counter tops. Broken fridge, no kettle and standard dirty carpet. On the plus side it had a new shower curtain.
2nd chalet
Everything working nothing new except the beds, which were a lot more comfortable than the old ones and that made me happy enough.
No shower gel or face wash, as promised but luckily I bring my own.
Hopefully that is not the end of the refurbishment for the club chalets.
Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
Seems everyone else liked the new mattresses… I found mine very lumpy and uncomfortable, it was just lucky I was knackered enough to sleep regardless!
Our chalet was pretty much standard Pontins. We were in Club, most things worked, except the lock on the bathroom door. I think our bed settee was new as well – and it was enormous and like sitting on a plank of wood. No soap or shower gel, but then I expected that and brought my own. There did seem to be a plethora of bath mats provided for some odd reason.
Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
I've never been to a Pontins or similar but I'm starting to be put off...I think I would be more comfortable camping!

You get used to it honest!
All you have to do is check it over once you get there, before unpacking the car. Do the following work: lights, fridge, shower, hot water, plumbing. Kettles and things can be replaced. If there's a problem with any of this stuff, or leaks/cleanliness, then go and complain, and it'll get sorted or you'll get moved. And make sure you take things with you to make yourself comfortable if that's what you need - do a search for "packing list" under Lory's name for starters. Helps if you're driving though!
Just remember that you'll hopefully be spending most of your time on the dancefloor, minimal time in the chalet, so as long as the basics work, it doesn't really matter. Everyone loves complaining about them afterwards too

Sorry Mal, thought I'd told you about that before, I always bring a plastic picnic mug with me which sorts that problem.

They don't do the welcome packs anymore, they did sell them in the shop for about £2 so we just bought one and next time will bring what we need. I guess the new owners are maybe cutting a few corners, fair enough, they need to keep it profitable to keep it open.

I agree - liked the new mattresses, (in fact I realised last night that they are more comfy than my mattress at home!). I tend to sleep on top of one of the duvets with another one over me and I was so comfy and cosy it was a struggle to get up and dance some evenings!
Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
Chalet 33 (again) must be 4th or 5th time now. Its a club.
Much improved as in feb the same chalet had a shower that wouldn't turn off, the entire floor was wet all weekend, the fridge didn't work.
This time - all the above bugs were fixed plus new carpet in bedroom, new shower curtain, think it had been given a damn good clean as well.
No kitchen pack, no soap by basin.
New beds - unmade
new duvets but not pillows.
Getting better it seems.

Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
Chalet 98, single bedroom, budget, filthy carpet, ancient mattress, low flowrate shower, fridge worked superbly, electricity cost me around £2.10 for the weekend.
Re: Southport chalet refurbishment - how was yours?
Beds can quite easily be improved by utilising all the spare bedding supplied in a cunning way. If you are a couple push the two beds together then you "tie" them together by using the spare single sheets across the two beds and tucking in. Add one or more spare quilts on top of the nasty old type plastic covered Pontins mattresses but below a final double bottom sheet that holds everything in place and hay presto you have a pretty comfortable double bed with extra padding.

Although everyone moans it is a lot more comfortable than camping. Just go with low expectations and come prepared in terms of what you pack. More often than not you will be pleasantly surprised.
