Susan Boyle.. Charlie Brooker's viewpoint.... DISCUSS?
Journalist Charlie Brooker said in the series finale of his BBC Four programme Newswipe: "thanks to a combination of our backwards, appearance-led culture and a nakedly manipulative set-up VT which made her out to be a comedy loser, Susan Boyle's performance soon became the number one talking point for every tiresome prick in the land [...] because apparently it's a ****ing miracle that women who aren't conventionally attractive are also capable of exhibiting any kind of skill whatsoever."[

Huge fan of Screenwipe/Newswipe.
Clip in question: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21E0EwXWiAM (near the end)
Brooker also does a great review of another Cowell show, the X Factor, highly recommended:

All of Simon Cowell's programmes are designed to fish as much money from viewers, create as much emotion (however artificial) and to exploit the people in the limelight as much as possible. Boyle is no exception.
The same thing happened with Paul Potts, someone apparently 'useless' suddenly able to sing. From what I can see - no one gives a damn about Paul Potts anymore.

GROAN! It's way too early in the morning to be reading jokes like that.
Re: Susan Boyle.. Charlie Brooker's viewpoint.... DISCUSS?
I do feel a certain amount of sympathy. I mean honestly, why would Mr and Mrs Boyle name their son Susan?

I think the £5 million he's earned will console him a bit.
Reality TV rich list

Whilst the comment is disgustingly wide of the mark: frankly, how dare U?
That said, it did Johnny Cash no harm.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I said right from the start that Susan Boyle is only famous because she's unconventional. People love to see one of the "freaks" surprising everyone by actually being able to sing! It's compulsive viewing, hence the You Tube figures of her first performance. If she had been a pretty twenty year old, she wouldn't have made it passed the first audition.

Agree on one point I mean I look like **** but sing like **** if i sang like a bird im sure i would be famous
A pretty 20 year old wouldnt have passed Simon casting couch but yes largely agree
We have 'preceptions' of people from the way they look. Most of the time these preceptions are correct

How dare I? The woman looks like a bulldog chewing a wasp. And I defend my right to poke fun at it.
The only bad thing I feel for Susan Boyle is that she has been snared into this bullshit fake celebrity circus that is reality TV. They're all the same.
Big Brother: The Unemployable watched by the Unemployed.

She was marketed as a freak - in fact she's a fairly ordinary person. I looked at the You Tube clip to see what everybody was talking about - and the chief talking point was the despicable behaviour of the judges and the audience, rather than Susan Boyle's looks, personality or talent. They were the real freak show as far as I was concerned.
