What's in a name?.... (event titles)
I was drawn to an event over the weekend, which was advertised as a 'Ball', as it was, I didn't make it but according to reports, it turned out to be not a lot more than an ordinary class night, with an 11pm finish but people were still charged £3 more, for what seemed like very little extra
Should there be some sort of standardization of names?
for example...
A Standard Class night - class, 11pm finish time
A freestyle - no class - longer (pre -advertised) finish time
A party night- themed/fun class? Food? Cabaret? Late finish
A Ball - No class? Strict dress code? Cabaret? drinks on arrival? Very late finish. Something special to set it apart from other nights?
Or is it 'our' responsibility to find out what's in 'the name'?
Any thoughts?

Absolutely. The name is the advert.
That particular event was mis- advertised, i dont know what the law is on this but im sure there is one somewhere.
If you advertise an event that turns out to be not what was expected or well under what should have been supplied, surely there grounds for a full refund or part refund.
I think the guidlines should be strict but wont ever be.

mmmmm well the fact your sad aside...:D Thats grounds for a trade description act then isn't it.
Would you describe the last tea dance you went too as a early evening dance with morocco/french feel to it. LOL - no.!!

Although thé dansant/tea dance comes from Colonial Morocco, its use was generalised (both in French and in English) to mean any dance in the afternoon or early evening - there doesn't need to be any kind of Moroccan flavour (and of course there probably wasn't a great deal of Moroccan flavour at the original tea-dances, given that the participants would have been French, although perhaps they served mint tea?).
It's a bit like bungalow meaning any kind of single storey house, and not literally one which is built in the style of Bengal.

Thanks for this Thread Lory, hopefully we can get a result out of it, that said the venue in question is a ceroc venue therefore being the largest Franchise in the country it should be quite easy to get some standard that is used, I appreciate that with Independent operators it could vary but they would soon start to use the standard. Again a good thread :respect:

I think maybe the strength of feeling caused by this particular event was unusual in that it was advertised as a "ball" but was not, freestyle started 45 mins later than advertised so an awful lot of people were just waiting for the full 45 mins, and to cap it all the freestyle ended 75 mins after it started!! Oh yes....and it cost £10 :naughty:

I like the descriptions and can see how people were annoyed with the night in question since in reality it was a standard class night dressed up as a Ball. If I'd been at Woking I'd have wanted my £10 back, how did Ceroc Surrey advertise the event?
Ceroc have the opportunity to standardise on this and it would give their punters a far clearer expectation. However, I must admit that I always look very carefully at what is advertised on the site.
