Re: What would ruin a dance for you?
There is one chap - really lovely man, and quite a good dancer - but has really really bad breath. I think he has a stomache disorder as it is always the same.
Such a lovely man - but I hate dancing with him and avoid him if I can as the smell of his breath ruins the dance

what can we do about this?
So few will ever mention it, that if there is a pattern to a possible cause, it can rarely be recognised.
I've asked both my doctor and my dentist and neither have been any help.

Re: What would ruin a dance for you?
1) Peripheral vision from the lead - any direction bar mine, my pet hate I'm afraid.......and thats allowing for shyness too
2) The great unwashed
3) Watches getting caught in my hair.......it takes me hours to get it looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards.....and then someone tries to straighten it for you
I'm pretty tolerant really when it comes to dancing......afterall, any dance is better than sitting out IMO........though I'm sure that blues basic isn't really necessary throughout Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas

I never wear a watch when dancing or have anything in my front pockets. I've danced at venues where they specifically tell us to take off watches and empty pockets during classes.

Are you sure you aren't confusing your local dance venue for the charge room at your local nick
Re: What would ruin a dance for you?
Me!!!
Like last night, when my partner's were good, the floor was good, the music was good but for some unexplained reason, I was RUBBISH! :tears:

Apart from the fact that any "teaching" should be done off the dancefloor.
It's most annoying and dangerous trying to dance next to a "lesson" taking place next to you.
I had a bloke teaching me tension for nearly a minute right in the middle of a busy dancefloor the other week.
If I'd taken his advice, I would have become Attilla the Hun. He needed to sort out his lead if I couldn't follow it IMO.
Re: What would ruin a dance for you?
Couple of additional things a forgot in the OP:
- partner smelling of smoke
- follower automatical backleading an armjive to start the dance off
- constant tension in followers arms as much so so the elbow never bends at all

Actually, that can ruin a dance for me, and has done in the past. If it's just a faint whiff, much as I dislike the smell I can live with it; but some people absolutely reek of cigarette smoke and their breath stinks as well. Then I find it really hard to dance with them as I'm trying to breathe as little as possible at the same time.

This wouldn't ruin a dance for me in itself as long as she follows most of what I lead for the rest of the dance. It does sometimes take me by surprise though, because I almost never use an armjive at the start (or any other part) of a dance.

To me it's not the best start as it says to me that I'm dancing with a backleader. And it's usually true. You can tell a lot from a follower within the first five seconds or so.
...and I never use the armjive either. Not at all now...

You wouldn't want to start off dancing 'out of time,' with me then!

A dangerous assumption I would have thought. I don't think he was right to offer unsolicted advice on a social floor but I also don't think you should assume that it must have been his lead that was faulty if you couldn't follow it.

:yeah: Well intentioned advice when not asked for may come across as total critisism. But the fact that he was prepared to take a fair amount of time to work with you on something may show that he's not as bad as you think, possibly just a little misguided in his approach. I know I am happy to take critisism from anyone.... what I do with it is another matter

Hahaha. I wouldn't! I didn't dance with you at SP did I?
Re: What would ruin a dance for you?
The only thing that ruins a dance for me is something that stops me having the next dance. I can put up with most things for 4 minutes, or find ways round them. However one dance I had last year wrecked my shoulder for a couple of weeks.

Better mark me down as a beginner then.

Seems a strange pet hate - presumably you enjoy all the resulting collisions with other dancers?
Hasn't been mentioned, but dancing near someone who I know is prone to doing aerials can ruin a dance for me. Bit like dancing next to a UXB.

Although the follower has a part to play in floorcraft, a good lead would dispense that by leading to an available space.
