What sort of link do you prefer?
To start with --- any link.
I don't know what you're referring to, and there are no links in your post to give me context.

I prefer:

Standard link colours, with clear indications of whether the link has been visited.
Standard and readable text fonts
Standard functionality (HREF, none of this scripting nonsense)
Clear accessibility-friendly descriptions (no "click here" rubbish  )

As for whether you should put the URL or a description, I dunno - sometimes it's nice to be able to copy a URL directly from the link description.

Put the usability book down, and back away slowly with your hands in the air.

I don't like http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum personally although it can be informative to know actual link beforehand.

I prefer to use a descriptive name such as Ceroc Scotland Forum (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum)

Although on my blog I often would just hyperlink a word by way of the reader being able to follow the link if the didn't know what I was really talking about or I wanted to give an example and such like, eg:

Its interesting that one of the most active ceroc forums in the UK is in Scotland (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum).

Link should obviously be differentiated from clear text and I'd always follow forum defaults as the colours normally suit.
