Isn't it still happening?

I guess tiger assumed the existing 11 Southport threads weren't enough coverage.

It's never too early to start an 'aftemath' thread. There may be some breaking news.
Especially if anyone can get online at Southport.

Good grief man, it's a dance weekender, not a superpower summit.

to steal a phrase - "A dance weeknder isn't a matter of life and death. It's more important than that".
nb - use of irony.

In your dreams, my friend.
Can I just say how shocking it is to see people wantonly post random and gratuitous nonsense on this thread, thus obscuring the vital purpose of telling people:

Who danced with whom
How long everyone stayed up for
What people wore as costumes
What wonderful music was being played in the Blues room
And so on.

I'm shocked.

My regret is that, unless ESG has gone to Spt and taken his laptop and loogged on here.....there will be no Photos from Spt thread from him this time.....

Would anyone like to file a 'Southport Sept 2006 the aftermath' match report now, before the end of the weekend, so I can read about the barbecues, the blues room, the boogie woogie, the brilliant cabarets, the bitching, the blokes, the beach, the bad ass attitudes, etc etc before Monday evening?

You went to a weekender with the expectation of it being bad? Why?

You went to a weekender with the expectation of it being bad? Why?I think JC goes everywhere with the expectation of being disappointed. (Especially Ashtons.) To be honest, I see it as a usurpation of my role as Chief Eeyore, and I am not pleased.

Isn't it a forum regulation that you're not allowed to allude to personal reasons without explaining them in full for all the nosey people to see?

Quite so. If one expects things to be utter rubbish it is much harder to be disappointed. I have found that it's a huge mistake to look forward to anything. (Especially Ashton's. )

Sometimes it is better to arrive than to travel hopefully.

Had a fabulous weekend!! Haven't laughed so much in a very long time.... I am still very hoarse..:yeah: :yeah:

Terrific company as always, with my non-forum buddies and also the fabulous forumites in attendance! Nice to meet so many new faces and catch up the lovely old ones too.. as always for me, it is the people which make my weekend special, thanks to you all. You are all FAB.:flower:

Only one or two lowspots for me.. being hoarse and, not being able to walk yesterday and today!! Have discovered the numbing effects of alcohol wear off... eventually.. :what: think I definately overdid something on Saturday night..   :innocent:

Music wise... well, I guess last night I spent a lot more time socialising last night, as the music was not quite my cup of tea.. but the dancefloor was still busy. Not enough WCS stuff for me...   But, then again.. I think its because I am now VERY snooty.. :yeah: (just need to learn how to do it.. ) Hardly ventured out of the Blues room all weekend..

I enjoyed the caberet (both the official one and the non-official one!!!) and looking forward to seeing the photos..) Massive :respect: to Cat and Amir.. who I thought were absolutely Stunning... (think I may start a fan club.... !)Ben and Melina were great too... and he was approachable enough to enable me to have a dance with him.. .lovely young man. :yeah: Getting brave in my old age:rofl:

Need a nice hot bath now and a very large masseur to deal with my poor legs.....

NB got home in record time.. fab drive.. just waiting for bed time...

Cosmic!!!!!

Still havent slept still buzzing only 137 days till next southport.

Big thankyou to everyone who danced with me bigger thanks to everyone who danced with me after 8 sunday morning when i had no idea what i was doing (other than twitching due to the caffine)

The caberet was amazing the best since Jordan and Tatiana!!!!!
Ben and Melina were increadable to say they are so young. Adam and Tas are so flexible it kinda scares me and Amir and Cat were awsome.

For anyone who wasnt there or i didnt manage to tell i asked Cat to dance she said yes i was terified and she did the splits right at the end of the dance (which was almost the best dance ever) although the splits scared the life out of me cos i thought i had done something wrong and dropped her

Best dance ever was sunday morning so much fun n me being me cannot for the life of me remember your name  i blame lack of sleep!!!

Special mention to Fletch, Witty, Ickle Chick'n and Megan (whose forum name i cant remember either. I no im useless you dont have to say it!!!!)

The music was amazing Marc and Trampy hitting all the right notes everytime :respect: :respect: :respect:

Last of all thanks so much to John and Wes for organising it all and for the breakfast's :nice: :respect: :worthy: :worthy: :respect: :nice:

Well for Personal reasons I enjoyed June more

But event fairly similar , like the upbeat lyndy class and taking part in the line dancing Cabaret
Water run out some times but over all very well run and on Par etc ( leads to Congrats on Under par winning the fancy dress) Can they get those in fancy dress to walk around the floor like last time. you dont see much if your sitting down and their static but great effort.

would prefer just a blues room with slower music but numbers suggest otherwise

Thanks two forum buddies on sunday night had a bit of a turn there

Plus thanks for the many dances from another forumite who for what ever reason I hadnt dance with much before , they were lovely :flower:

ps didnt hear any seagulls :respect:

My first Southport  it was a little daunting...especially given the fact I was by myself most of the weekend. I enjoyed myself non-the-less. I met a few lovely forumites :flower: (thank you Rhythm King, Chef and Tramp :flower: )

I found the Blues class on the first night a little odd...I loved the West Coast Swing and Viktor's smoooooth class. Did anyone do the Bachata? Wasn't really my style but Ian Worrell (I think) was a fantastic teacher :flower:

Looking forward to next year

first southport as well... had very high expectations I suppose because of all the stuff I had read on the forum before, which is not so good obviously because easy to be (even slightly) disappointed.

Well it think it's fair to say that I wasn't the slightlest disappointed, I had a fab week-end :D

Feel like  though today after just 2 hours sleep last night, and also my feet hurt so much  ! Had a phone call from work today and I have to be offshore tomorrow

Thanks to all the guys - and girls - for all those brilliant dances all week-end long :flower: :worthy: ; I think I had a good fix of dancing and hope it will last until I come back from Cameroon (going away next week for 4 months - great experience but I will miss dancing :tears: ).

Can't believe I didn't figure out more forumites though  - like S38 - if you've been in the blues room all that time then surely we have danced together?

Looking forward to the next southport now (which is probably going to be June for me)

Southport September 2006
My View

The Journey - More than 8 hours! Left London at 11.00 arrived at 19.15. Normally takes six hours, I was exhausted.

The Afternoons - Dancing in the blues room in the afternoon, mmm... does it get any better?

The Workshops - 'Tango for Jivers' and 'Jango' workshops were brilliant. So much makes more sense now. Looking forward to putting them into practise.

The Milongas - Two nights, an hour of Tango to fabulous Nuevo tango music, mmm...

The Ballroom - After the milongas, an hour and a half of ballroom and latin dancing with an delightful man who was a dance teacher and ex-British Junior champion before he discovered modern jive. He monopolised me and I wasn't complaining, what fun.

The Massage - Much more expensive than other weekenders. Can't imagine why. Perhaps someone saw an opportunity to take advantage of the punter and make a few bob.

What happened to the relaxing massage in a chalet? Mine was behind a sheet in the children's play area amongst the plastic cars and mini houses, between the ball pond and the multilevel climbing frame. To add to the 'experience' my masseur apologised because his soothing whale music was drowned out by the loud 'Funky Swing Jivestyle' workshops tracks being played in the Latin Quarter next door.
It was a disgrace. Not impressed.

The Shower - Sunday afternoon, water pouring through the ceiling of my bathroom. With visions of the ceiling caving in, I raced upstairs. No answer. I told reception who sent a man over immediately, he came into my chalet and made two holes in the ceiling with a screwdriver. I'm no plumber but isn't that an odd thing to do?

The Danger - There were some seriously frightening women. I can't believe that they normally dress or behave like that at their local venues. The men were in danger.

The Gum - Friday night dancing in the main room, half way through a track my partner held on to me with one hand, put his other hand in his pocket, took out a packet of chewing gum, popped one into his mouth, put the packet back into his pocket and carried on dancing. Weird or what?
I'm not in a hurry to dance with him again.

The Time - Sunday afternoon, a gorgeous teacher asked me to dance, he'd finished teaching for the weekend and was happy that his workshops had gone well. The music was great, the dance was fun, he was smiling and I was happy. About half way through, I was enjoying the moment when he asked me... .................. the time(!) Guess he wasn't really concentrating then. After looking at my watch, he threw his hands up in horror, muttered something incomprehensible and ran off.
I'm not in a hurry to dance with him again either.

The Meters - Was I the only person to spend £8 on electricity? My meter was just chewing up my cards. Someone told me that they used one card which lasted the whole weekend.

The Conversations - So nice to have time to chat, catch up, relax.

The Feet - Thank heavens for Ibuprofen gel.

The Disappointments - Wish I had a pound for every guy who said they'd see me later for a dance. Shame to miss out on dancing with so many of my favourite people, not forgetting my favourites who weren't there at all.
So many leaders, so little time.

The Strangers - lovely dances with new people, each one a lovely surprise. Meeting strangers who tango was a very special treat.

The Samaritan - Thanks to the lovely person who took care of me when I really wasn't feeling well. I interrupted his relaxing coffee and he didn't seem to mind driving around the sleepy neighbouring villages on Sunday morning looking for a chemist. Some people are just so sweet.

The Surprise - Someone kept calling me CeeCee and I didn't know who he was. He was playing games and I had to ask someone else to reveal his identity. Why was I surprised when we danced? Simply because I'd never heard anyone mention that he was THAT good.

The Journey - Home in six and a half hours. Much better.

Southport September 2006

The Journey - Travelling with great forumites made the time pass quickly. "If I had a million dollars..........". Arrived in 6 and a half hours only to get lost within 5 minutes of the venue

The Workshops - I have to say that I only did the WCS Workshops and found them hard work but very enlightening. I was surprised that Ben & Melina had a lot of personality on stage considering their age. Very good classes . I went to do the Cha Cha class but with 50+ women over, I decided it was not a good idea

The Blues Room - During the day, everyone was chilled out and had some great dances. During the evening, it was lovely to go outside as the Blues room was very packed.

The Weather - Even though the weather men said that we shoudl expect Saturday and Sunday to be showers, the weather remained dry

The Massage - After debating about getting a massage, I succumbed and paid the money. I was in much need of one and being single, do not normally have any access to strong hands . The lady masseuse told me that I had so many knots that I could build a house on  - As I said, much needed!!

The Rooms - So many men, so little time!! I had some fantastic dances all weekend. Spent most of my time in the Blues room as it was the most ventilated. Did venture into the other rooms sporadically but could not breathe in Latin Room let alone dance

The Dancing - On average, the dances that I had were mindblowingly good.

On friday night, I had not really got into the mindframe but danced with many known and unknown dancers that made me glad I had ventured so far.

By saturday, I was tired and grumpy by about 1am and the music was not doing anything to me. I was beginning to lose all faith, then 2.30am hit and I ventured into the Main room to see if I could wake myself up only to come face-to-face with Graham Fox. I got the confidence and went for it....... we had a fantastic WCS dance    That was it - I was there!!! Every dance after that took me away. I had some great hip-hop style dances with a dancer from Cornwall and some luschious chilled-out blues dances from a guy from Devon   I even managed to get a dance with Ben and Joseph  :awe:

By Sunday night, I had some great WCS dances during the set from Greg but once that finished and a set of Swing music came on, I felt lost :tears:. I never quite got back after that. I danced with one guy in the Blues Room at 3.30am doing beginner ceroc moves and felt downhearted. Oh well, can't win them all!!

The Barbeque - Meeting up with forumites again was a great way to prepare for the saturday night dancing. I managed to catch up on all the gossip. Big thanks to CJ and Claire S :worthy: for cooking the food and to Minnie and the Easy, Limpy, Foxy Lushious crew for the use of their chalet for the party. It was lovely to meet Trisha and Joseph properly and talk to them about their background back in Birmingham.

The Chalet - Sharing with other people is much better than when I was on my own last year and had some great laughs - mainly about me being so tired that I put the cereal box in the fridge after I used it!! Cooking tuna steaks on sunday evening was a great idea but I did succumb and had a cooked breakfast on saturday morning . Luckily Howard joined me for breakfast :flower:

The Private Lesson - Yes, I paid for the services of a 18 year old man!! :yum: . Me and Cruella shared Ben for a whole hour and it was worth every penny :worthy:

All-in-all I had a great Southport experience but I think that I went through a lot more extreme highs and lows then I have done before.

The Milongas - Two nights, an hour of Tango to fabulous Nuevo tango music, mmm...Yes, very nice. Esp the Sun night. I didn't feel I was dancing well at all, but some comments from partners and observers were encouraging (esp from one lady who was a lovely dancer herself).

Its a good idea if water is coming through a ceiling - there is a risk of the whole ceiling collapsing, but making a few small drainage holes allows the water to escape and the ceiling to dry out. Its then easier to repair a few small holes than replace a whole ceiling.

Back to the review...

I had a good weekend. I no longer have a wonderful weekend just because its a dance weekend, but I was prepared for that and have shifted my perceptions and expectations. I had some great dances in all of the rooms, though I tend to just pop into the main room, have a few dances and head out again, some of those were really fab dances.

Some unexpected tangos - some had seen me tango with someone else (one had seen me tango in June) - nice to be asked up for a dance with a stranger to discover its a tango.

I enjoyed the music in the latin room and had some very enjoyable, playful dances in there.

I found the blues room a little crowded, but enjoyed Sun afternoon and later on Sun night when there was a bit more space.

I asked more (and only got one refusal - from a forumite  ).

I think the biggest difference for me was how I felt about my dancing. There were several folk from NI on their first weekender - they've been dancing the same length of time I was when I came to my first Southport - and it reminded me of how far my dancing has progressed since then. I know I still have lots of things I want to learn and improve, but I felt confident and comfortable with my own dancing, and as a consequence enjoyed the dances more, and probably danced better too.

I had a great time at Southport though I feel like a wreck now.

I enjoyed Amir's musicality class (especially the MC Hammer choreography) and also felt his cabaret with Cat was the pick of the (very entertaining) bunch.

Can count the number of disappointing dances I had on the fingers of one hand which is quite some commendation given the number of hours I was dancing for. Didn't ghettoise myself in the Blues Room this time and enjoyed some dances in the Main room (the Latin Quarter is too oppressive for my liking).

The BBQ was fun (even if I was late due to thinking it started at 7 and not 6  ) and sorry for anyone in the round who was prevented from sleeping by the combined laughter of the Di-yena and myself when we were the only two left.

Not sure the gender balance was quite right and this led to some pressure and predatory women. For me, one of the big attractions of Southport is the opportunity to dance with ladies from Scotland (I don't normally name names as it's too easy to slight people who you don't list but just how good a dancer is Lisa :worthy:  :respect: ) and the North and Midlands who I don't otherwise get to see. I didn't manage as much of this as I wanted to this time. Perhaps some of the people I know from dancing locally are less confident of asking new people and find comfort in a familiar face but it did lead me to regret some missed opportunities.

Enjoyed the Sunday afternoon on the decking, drinking and dancing. Plenty of smut and innuendo from the forum ladies (and not just the people you might expect) - a quick mind is a dirty mind :D Also very enjoyable to watch Noel meet his match dancing with Isabelle - that's some crazy style.

I'm too tired to write sensible stuff so I'll just say that Southport ROCKS, yeah!

For me this Southport was very different to any other, it was more chilled & relaxing.

Didn't do any classes. Decided to reserve my energy for dancing with all those great dancers. Had some fantastic dances, also some not so good. Why do some men dance in the blues room when they have no idea what it's all about. No clue as to the tempo, dance as if they have the whole room to themselves & inevitably who gets stamped on, elbowed etc etc etc

BBQ was fabbo & great to catch up with everyone. Crumble was deeeeeeeeeeelicious with custard

Great to see so many forumites & from all over the country.

Indian summer, couldn't have asked for better weather.

Another fab Southport

The Gum - Friday night dancing in the main room, half way through a track my partner held on to me with one hand, put his other hand in his pocket, took out a packet of chewing gum, popped one into his mouth, put the packet back into his pocket and carried on dancing. Weird or what?
I'm not in a hurry to dance with him again. sounds rather conscientious to me - I've lost count of the number of times people on here have complained about people having bad breathe

The Meters - Was I the only person to spend £8 on electricity? My meter was just chewing up my cards. Someone told me that they used one card which lasted the whole weekend.
I only discovered that I had a meter in the car on the way out as I pullled the 2nd key for my chalet out of the envelope to give the security guard and found the card - have put it away safely for next time

:tears: :tears: I missed this again - will have to make sure I get there in Feb come hell or high water

My first Southport having ventured afar from Kent. I had a fantastic time, found a more relaxed atmosphere than other weekenders I have been on which was much needed after an absolutely horrendous 12 hours plus worth of travelling to get there!!! The Jango classes were brilliant - Amir is one of my most favourite teachers. I have done previous classes of his and also a muscality workshop in London. Friday night was absolutely brilliant, I had loads and loads of dances and it was so nice to see men standing around the edge of the dance floor as well as women!! The gender balance worked very well for me. Hopefully I will return next September. Unfortunately the distance is a little far to attend every event.

Finally surfaced after much needed sleep. Wow, another great Southport and boy oh boy, were we lucky with the weather again, makes such a difference being able to dance outside and also have some airflow through the Blues Room.

Had some amazing dances and I think the DJ's excelled themselves this time, the music just gets better and better, as does the standard of dancers. Trampy, you know exactly how to keep us going through 9am.

As I became renamed "Dirty Bird" over the weekend, I shall enjoy living up to my new pseudonym (hopefully).

Look forward to seeing lots of you very soon.

Well I will get around to making a longer post about this on my blog but as a quick post on here I had a really good time :flower:. I didn't dance as much as I did last Southport but I was attempting to avoid making myself ill like I did last time and taking it easy to avoid further injuring myself. I think I maybe had three average dances at the whole weekend and those were more about my own confidence than anything else. Everything else was fantastic and I loved dancing with people I already knew and with new people.

I hate thanking people in particular because then I forget other people and then I feel really bad that I didn't mention just how good our dancer were too.

Lovely to meet Tess and have a couple of games of Magic with her along with two lovely dances in the Latin Quarter on Friday and a couple of dances in the Blues room (including a lovely follow dance). Loved the couple of fast dances I had with Dizzy in the main room on the Saturday, and for her putting up with my attempts at WCS. Thanks to Freya for all the fab dances we had and for looking at my arm when it was sore :(. The BBQ on Saturday was really good fun and thanks to that flat for use of their microwave, grill and stuff without which I'd be dying of food poisoning right now.

Humm... this is going to get long isn't it, with lots of "thank you" etc in so I'm going to splice that with    to Little Monkey for not being able to dance for most of the weekend. Sorry to Drathzel and Cruella for strangely not having the confidence to ask them :really:.

Anyway it was lovely to have Linny Lou over for dinner and a natter on Sunday. Monday morning in the Blues room was  . Loved the dances I had with so many people including Lucy, Jivecat and Yliander (including the face pulling/four way dance with The Passion Harem and Doune). Loved the final two dances with the woman who I have no idea who she was. They were lovely .

(My thanking is nearly over, honest)! Thanks to the lovely Louisa for all of our lovely dances and putting up with me for the weekend   . Thanks to the bunch of people at breakfast Monday morning (Marc, Rachel, Yliander, Trampy, Lucy and that guy I was never introduced to) for their enjoyable company and Wes for paying for it all :D. And TiggerBabe for the lift back, the enjoyable conversation and the best set I've ever heard in a car.

OK, here goes....

Arrived Fri eve, later than planned. Met my two fantastic roomies, picked up a few hints and tips, changed... then off to experience my first Southport, and my first real experience of a blues room...

I arrive in the blues room for the Forum Reception, drop my bag on the sofa and hear the opening bars of "Rock Me": turn around and there is Cruella. What a start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A slight tired, emotional moment on the Sun morning, aside... I was soaring the WHOLE weekend.

My first foray into blues taught me SOOOOOOOOOOOO much... the dancers around me gave me so much support, I just got more and more confident on the floor... it was amazing, truly amazing....
Am lost, because I have so many people to thank for their contribution, but am determined not to be too luvvy about it (so... PM's on way, and U can slap me if I've missed U)

I really enjoyed DJing on the Sun afternoon... the set was slightly more intense than I intended, but I deliberately set out to play a different set within the confines of convention.... (moi?? pushing boundaries?!?!?!? ) It was a nerve-racking experience and, again, thank you for your support in that. You know, and I know, who you are.:flower:

My dare will get covered in the other thread, but respect goes to all darees: esp Tessa and Jammy. LM::rofl:

I know I'm jumping but I'm still tired and memories are flooding back to me...

My one negative is what it takes to get certain DJ's to play requests, but we'll cover that in another thread:angry:

I wrote on this forum, once upon a time, about a dance that changed my world. This weekend has just done the same...

Thanks to Wes and John, the DJs, the forumites and the dancers.

Once again, you have rocked my world.:worthy: :worthy: :worthy:

You never know what you're going to get next, it can be anything, and so many songs I've never heard before. Wonderful!!

My weekend at Southport:

Good: dancing, highlights were mainly my first ever ballroom "freestyle" - thanks NigelS, TGNS and Brian for waltzes, the lovely guy who CeeCee mentioned earlier for an *amazing* quickstep (I have NO idea what my feet were doing, but it seemed to work), Neil (for patiently partnering me in the cha cha class) and MikeyR for cha cha in the Blues Room (sorry I'm fick at the reverse spot turns).

Weather

Dizzy was a fab chalet mate and she and I and King GD had lots of larfs (my pussy is missing you...)

Bad: Friday traffic. My back. My ballroom dancing.

Ugly: My ballroom dancing

And yet again we have the "elitist in the blues room" argument. Yawn.

Well I’ve slept, eaten and done the washing and my feet have gone quiet so here goes

I found this southport much more relaxing than June – it never seem quiet as heaving with people as June, plus I knew more people by sight this time which made things much more fun and I didn’t do any classes – decided that given missing most of Saturday would make it a freestyle weekend.

Arrived 4pm Saturday and was dancing by 4.30pm – Thanks Pretzelmeister for a fabulous first dance

Didn’t dance as much as I had wanted Saturday night due to accidentally hitting the stop button on my alarm rather than the snooze button  but my Sunday morning dances were blissful so all was not lost – thank you to Pretzelmeister, Ceroc Jock, Dave Hancock, Jiveaddicted, Rafael and those who names I lack memory of :flower: :flower:  :flower: :flower:

When Dance Demon was finally released from the deck Sunday morning I headed back to my chalet for a bite to eat and a sleep – which didn’t end up as long as I would have liked – got a call an hour after I went to sleep and wasn’t able to get back to sleep – so lazed around reading instead heading back to the Bluesroom where I pretty much stayed until closing – had some delightful moments in the Main room and just the occasional wander into the latin room

Having already packed ready for a early departure that changed – hung around and helped pack, which included the amazing spectacle of Rachel & Marc actually managing to get ALL that stuff into their car!!! :respect: :respect:

Breakfast after this feat was a chaotic laughter filled time which I didn't want to have end as that would have meant that the weekend was over  Thanks for breakfast Wes & John!

Highlight of the Sunday afternoon had to be Ceroc Jock’s set – a welcome change from all the swing music and some rather unexpected tunes - Bad Name (remix): Bon Jovi ?! – half way through a dance with Paul F I realised what I was dancing to.

And there were the fun dances with Dirty D on the deck  A companionable dinner with Claire and Jan

The fourway dance mentioned by Killingtime was a highlight of my Monday morning as was forehead dancing with Marc, plus all my dances with everyone else.

It was great to catch up with so many friends and to meet new people. Special thanks to drathzel for the lovely company, general silliness and dance  see you soon beautiful. Pretzelmeister & William for predancing fun & games and silliness. And Little Monkey for having the ticket to sell to me in the first place

Also have to say a special thanks to Russ & Sarah who provided me with a lift and lovely company back to Reading

So in summary thank you to everyone I danced with, talked with, laughed with  to my Scottish friends – miss you all  – and hope to make it back up there before I depart for OZ next year

Had a great weekend, easy journeys both ways (thanks to Roger getting me up at 5:30 a.m. on Friday! ) fab company, great dancing, maybe not as much as usual, though I kept going through till 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning. I'm still completely knackered, and probably coming down with the weekender bug too  I didn't need that to know how good a time I had.

I'm interested to know what the non Westies thought of me doing the WCS set at peak time on Sunday night. I reckon there were a couple of tracks that didn't go down too well for the MJ/blues dancers. Should it be repeated? Would it be better if it was indicated on the djing schedule? (Though maybe that should go on another thread, I will post the playlists soonish...)
I think there must have been a shortage of WCS leaders, as I got more requests to dance than ever before while I was behind the decks, but I couldn't leave my post.

I had no problem doing my MJ thing during the time I was there, but then some people think I have a very west coast style to my dancing... :)

I think it should be repeated with proper notification, though if other people don't like it, maybe in the Latin room...

As a beginner westie I only had half a WCS dance with a total beginner just after the first WCS class – much easier to look good that way! ;)

Hi everyone,
Just to say that, over the weekend, John and I had lots of requests for more WCS music and particularly for a slot devoted exclusively to WCS! So... we are in consideration of allotting a time spot in the Dance Den/Mini Ballroom on each of the nights, say, for an hour or hour and a half to cater exclusively for WCS enthusiasts, together with the slot allocated exclusively for Tango/Ballroom!
Any thoughts on this?

Any thoughts on this?Yes - do it, but keep it in the blues room! It fitted so well in there because of the crossover in the styles of music, but might fit better at a slightly earlier time so that those who are still in the early learning stages don't feel like the only time they can practise is late at night. Also, if it's nice and early, it won't get on the nerves of the 'I wanna dance blues, why are all these random people in my way' crowd.

Makes sense considering that the highest billed teachers at Southport are teaching WCS. So this gives the people that do the WCS classes a chance to practice what they have learnt.

Yes - do it, but keep it in the blues room!
I too would prefer it in the blues room but i also feel that would upset a few non-westies.

:yeah:

And that way the WCS folks won't feel ghettoised, and the MJ folks who like doing a bit of MJ to WCS music won't feel excluded.

No. You misunderstand. I wasn't asking for the recipe. I was asking for more cake....

In that case, you'll have to go out shopping for me first, as I'm out of cake baking ingredients......

And then you'll just have to find someone to bake the cake for you!

Keep it in the blues room, please! A lot of the WCS music is nice to do bluesy style dancing to, anyway.....

I do find it a bit strange that people were complaining about not enough WCS music, though...... I had lots of great WCS dances in the blues room during some of the 'normal' blues sets! And I did a few WCS dances in the main ballroom, too.

For the ignorant, can we have a list of 10 tracks that work only for WCS, and ten tracks that cross over so we all know the kinda thing we mean??

Thank you.

having a slot dedicated to WCS is a great idea but I concur with the others who've said to keep it in the blues room... may be a bit earlier / or end of afternoon.

It's true that a lot of music played in the blues is suitable for WCS as well but personaly during those dedicated slots I would also like to dance to some really upbeat and faster tracks - the kind you have more in the main room.
Now I understand this might upset the people who don't do west coast, so it might require to use the dance den instead. That would be a shame though as obviously some of the WCS dancers might stay in the blues room...

Were you with my freind easy tiger (Stacey) ?

Thanks for the welcome

Dance with Stacey quite often around the south-west but didn't come up with her.

Was part of a group of 12 from the south, mostly from Exeter. One of them gave her a lift up and back :nice:

I thought that there were plenty of WCS-able tracks over the weekend. Both in the blues room, and also during the day. I guess that people might want some modern stuff, rather than bluesy stuff though...

Did anyone actually dance in the Dance Den this year? I recall last year it was very sparsely populated. Was this fixed this time round?

Did anyone actually dance in the Dance Den this year? I recall last year it was very sparsely populated. Was this fixed this time round?I don't know about anything being 'fixed'. I was in it for a couple of hours for the tango dancing. Its OK being 'sparse' as many of us are fairly beginner tango/ballroom dancers and need space to move round the room for the progressive dances.

The only drawback for me was the timing, I'd have preferred the tango to be later on, maybe 10:30-11:30pm, I know there were a fair few people I saw dancing tango in the latin room who weren't there for the milonga in the Dance Den and I suspect it was because of the early time.

It can help, particularly for those less skilled in a particular dance form (or music), to have music flagged in advance for suitability for those dance forms.

This might be achieved lots of different ways to suit the circumstances, announcements, blocks of time, known patterns, colour coding on a display etc.;

Well on Friday night, I was scheduled to DJ for the ballroom dancers, after Toby who was DJing for Tango & Milonga. When I arrived there was only one couple. I played some ballroom for the same couple who stayed for about half an hour, then there was no one for the last half hour. I hung around in case anyone else turned up but no one did. I think the problem was that it was only advertised for Saturday & Sunday. Certainly on the Sunday night there were around a dozen couples dancing ballroom, and they appeared to enjoy themselves.

Hi, I'm new to the Forum and new to Southport, this was my first of many I hope. Thought I'd give my views............it was a fantastic weekend with brilliant music and lots of very friendly people. It can be a bit daunting when there are that many people and you only know a handful, but I soon settled in and had a great time. I thoroughly enjoyed the blues room, especially during the afternoon and at 6am, but liked to dance in the latin and main room aswell....trying to get a bit of all styles in! I managed to get a bit of wcs in here and there, but found it difficult, not knowing anyone, to know who the westies were. There were plenty of tracks that wcs could be danced to.....but I'm always happy for more. :D

as i said its only a week late but now im back on the forum and able to play!!!!

i was another 'southport virgin' and i wasnt disappointed! i had a fab weekend, and it was great to meet so many of you lovely forumites and get some fantastic dances - the blues room was definitely the centre of my weekend and i think that was the place to meet the experimental dancers i love the most!

there are too many special moments to mention them all but some of the best had to include:

dancing with paul (pretzelmeister) and jo into the wee small (well actually 12.30 isnt actually so small really!!) hours of sunday morning - that was fab!
Sheena - ur set that morning meant we couldnt go to bed - it was great! :flower:

the pre - dance parties and some peoples fancy dress outfits - so much fun!!

toast (i wont mention any names!!!!!)

i could probably talk for hours about the weekend, infact the people who didnt come with me are probably bored hearing about it! have decided that when i get back form my trip im gonna set up my own wee treatment room at my next weekender - between lms back and dizzys wrist (hope its still a bit better hon!) it might come in handy!!!!

thanks to you all for making it a weekend to remember. roll on next september!
