Based on the discussion on this thread (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9566), I'm curious what people here think...

Yeah, but it's not 'an' Sport or 'an' Science, so I just left it as 'a'. So sue me. :na:

Pedant...

On another note though,
I've always argued dance is an Art form, but it has to be a sport as well because dancers some of the fittest athlete's out there...

Mind you - there's a lot of very fit people in various armies too, and I'm not sure running around shooting people (for real) has been deemed a sport (yet)

Aerobic exercise, yes. Sport, no. Unless you're doing it competitively.

Art - a quality of communication between the two dancing and when a display (or just being watched) also between them and the audience.

An aesthetic that can leave the spectator and each other exhilerated, or any other emotion intended to elicit :nice:

None of the above. For me, it's a religion!

Come on get with it DS - everybody & Frank MacAvennie's auntie knows it's spelt "burdz".

(Apologies juju :flower: - just a bit of parochial humour...)

I have opted for the art option!...its a way to express ones self in a physical visual way......:respect:

A few bizaar thoughts at 1:51am when I cannot sleep.....

For paintings, I have always felt art was "the expression of an artists senses or imagination through various recording mediums with the sole purpose of replicating these senses for other peoples enjoyment or edification".

The difference with dancing is that one deliberately allows oneself to be influenced by only music and you are not trying to replicate or record this, but enjoy and share the expression of these feelings with a partner, possibly an audience, through the restrictive expression of wiggling and woggling.

I think dance is art.......

If one defines sport as "a nice way to keep fit such that the pain is overpowered and a bizaar need to run, jump and stretch out for things", then dance is definitely a sport.

Finally if science is "any system of knowledge attained by verifiable means", then I am certainly getting to "know" ladies (not necessarily bibilically) and veryfying that this is a good idea by dancing with her first!

It all depends on ones definitions!

Am I missing the point here?

I'm sure that anyone watching me dance wouldn't call it an art form, the only thing scientific about it is I try not to step on my partners toes too often and the only vaguely sporty thing about dance is I sweat a lot....

Surely for most participants dance is a passtime? A great one sure, but still a means of enjoyment and socialising.

Just because I can't paint very well doesn't mean that painting is not an art-form.

Just because I can't dance very well doesn't mean that dancing is not also an art-form.

If something is form of art, then practicing it (however badly) means you are taking part in an artistic endeavour.

Art does not need to be great to be art.

If you think that for some people dancing is art; then for all people, dancing is art.

Sport is different (in my mind) in that what is a sport for one person need not be a sport for another.

Science... Well every activity in the universe can be studied in a scientific manner, and dancing is no different. Thus, like everything else, it is possible to study the science in dancing.

So, for me, dancing is an art, and a science. And for the few times I danced in a competition, it became a sport.

It is also a great pastime. :)
