View Full Version : "WHY do women bother?"

From another thread...

To be honest, I will never cease to be amazed by the number of women that continue to do classes in new styles at weekenders when it should be pretty obvious that few of the men are likely to pick it up enough to dance it with them, or in MJ beyond a certain level when all they can learn is how to backlead moves that the men can't lead. I guess they must just do it to meet the men

Who do women bother?
Only a few bother me -- but I'm always willing to find room for a few more.

That sounds sensible.

I've gone to MJ based classes in other styles - not so much to learn them, but to look for ladies to dance later. It would seem perfectly rational for ladies to go for a similar motive.

Title - Sorry, had to get that out of the way first.

Another style dance - to sample it? I've done this on weekenders, gives me a flavour of the dance and if I might like to learn more of it. I've done this with eg WCS and identified men in the class who aren't beginners, who offered to practice with me and teach me a little more later in the weekender.

And guys probably do them as taster classes too. At Scarborough there were 4 AT classes, enough for some to be able to get up and have a little go in freestyle - and at least one guy from those classes that I met has followed that up with classes. (I was already hooked by that stage.)

But intermediate/advanced moves classes, yeah, why? If a guy leads a move, I'll follow. I don't need to know the move. If I need to know the move, as a follower, is it really suitable for freestyle?

But, if you are new on a weekender and don't know many people, doing classes does help you to meet men in the rotation, share a smile or a giggle as you learn together, then have some familiar faces to dance with later.

Maybe they do it to increase their repertoire of movements, or (to put it another way) to expand their "dance vocabulary"?

Similar position for the guys - unless you go with a regular partner, so I'll answer from my own perspective - I think there's enough overlap.
To be honest, at MJ weekenders, I'm going to be picking the workshops in different styles in favour of the jive workshops, regardless of whether I think I'll ever do other classes in said styles. Very often, I know fine well I'll never make direct use of what I'm taught.

So who bother? (yeah - I know someone changed the title, but I prefer the old one )

Everything I learn gets chucked into the 'style' melting pot, mixed around, and may produce fun results on the dance floor.
I may be able to improvise MJ or Lindy or Salsa (or other) moves out of something in the workshop.
It's great to stretch yourself and try something challenging and new.
I might find this new style / dance form / technique is so great that I'll later want to go out and learn it properly. Happened with Lindy, for example.

The faint tang of bitterness taints the water... the empathy sharks are sensing their prey, beginning to circle, slowly gauging the extent of the wounds, moving ever closer, ever closer. The unsuspecting prey continues to flounder as the outcome grows nearer and nearer - the inevitable kill.

Why?

Well, I can only go on my own experience but I think I like going to classes at weekenders to:
- meet dancers that I haven't already met and introduce myself (I always introduce myself, even if they forget 30 seconds later  )
- do different classes to sample a different dance style - even if I won't take up the dance or remember the moves but I like to experiment.
- to sample different teachers' classes - every teacher has a different approach to teaching and there is always something that can be learnt by a class, even if it is not a move.
- to enjoy myself - it is always fun doing something that you have never done before.

Those of you who have not met me before, be sure to introduce yourself to me during the many different classes at Southport  :flower:

Similar position for the guys - unless you go with a regular partner, Why is it similar for the guys?

I can see it being an issue if you are learning a different style, or something specialised like drops or aerials, but not for standard intermediate/advanced MJ.

To be fair, there are plenty of photos of Dizzy here so she could be easily spotted. The same goes for most of us who have been here a while (and get photographed often by ESG!).

Why is it similar for the guys?

Because we're in touch with our feminine sides.

Why?

Because I find that different dance styles give me insight into what I need to improve my dancing overall - different musicality, different frame (e.g. ballroom vs close hold in other styles), different footwork, different aspects of lead/follow, etc. Plus wot straycat said about the challenge.
