View Full Version : MTG: Warning - geekier than the computer threads!

Ok, I might have mentioned this before, but I am a closet geek. Of the least useful kind too - I'm a girl gamer, or at least I used to be (don't have much time for it anymore, funnily enough).

Influenced by previous, ah, aquaintances, I went through a Magic: the Gathering phase and as a result have a pretty large and possibly quite valuable collection of MTG cards, which I am now looking to sell. Does anyone (preferably in London, but I can do online too) know of an obvious place to sell these? I know ebay would be an option, and I will look into it, but I don't know enough about what I have to sell them all individually (and you wouldn't believe how much packing a single valuable card requires) or to be able to put an accurate reserve price on the collection.

Any tips, or interested parties (even if they are for geeky other halves or children) would be greatly appreciated.

sorry used to do d&d at poly (that's like a university but we had to work - okay?) never quite got it out of the system.

if you don't know what i just wrote

I've not played games for quite a while now - just not had the time. I went through a phase of World fo Warcraft though. Now that was possibly the most addictive game I've ever played. Ever. My ex (no link to me playing!) used to despair of me! I never got into the card games myself, I was always a PC gamer...however, I never really played any of the shooters online. It was too demeaning getting fragged for the umpteenth time by some 12-year-old from Arkansas.

Tess, have a look at www.coolstuffinc.com. I have sold some MTG cards to them last year, and it went well.
They are quite quick in replying and once they receive your cards, they pay straight away (you need a paypal account). You might not make as much money as selling them individually on eBay but if you want to sell without hassle that's the way to go.
By the way their buying list for MTG is here (http://www.coolstuffinc.com/main_buyList.php?viewList=Magic)

*peeks nose out of closet*

I ..erm.. could never get to grips with MTG.. Despite Gadget desperately trying to explain it to me at UNI. I was always more of a RPG player. Toon, Paranoia , AD&D, GURPS and Werewolf my speciality. I tried Cyberpunk once.. much to Gadget's amusement ("killed" most of the bad guys AND my own party with one well placed/misplaced shot ;) )

Had a brief "re visitation" to the old days recently in my batchelor pad, Myself, Gadget and a few others, fiddling round with bits of paper and piles of odd shaped die .. for ahem... for purely sentimental old time sakes reasons you understand .. cough.

My Advice Tess .. don't sell. I got rid of all my RPG books and manuals.. only to spend a fortune later in getting them all back via Ebay. better off finding some local likeminded individuals for a quick game or 10,000 ;)

*climbs back into closet again*

If they were RPGs I would agree with Beowulf but for cards I would say.. sell.
First time I sold my more expensive cards I got enough money to go on holiday twice and I don't regret it (it was 10 years ago)

*sigh*

I thought everyone in the JYV sector knew the story, but here goes...

I was asked by R&D to test out the new Dance Waffler, a big device into which you insert the clone, cook for a couple of minutes and out comes a top-quality chocolate dancer. After two - um, embarrassing - failures, they sent me to classes, at one of which I was contacted by the non-existent Tango secret society. My friend the Computer kindly pointed out (very very sharply, I pleasantly add) the error of my ways on that latter occasion, and so here I am.

azande, we've had reports that women go "Ooo" at the prospect of a dance with you. This is clearly due to your empathic powers which are a mutation. Mutant powers are treason. Please report to your nearest Soylent Red Rendermatic booth for immediate termination and bio-mass recycling. Have a nice day.

Y'know the way some competition dancers go around with that fixed, slightly sweaty grin? Remember the rulebook cover art?

Thanks guys for your help - well, thanks azande and Ghost anyway, and thanks for the reassurances that I'm not alone as a geek infiltrating the dance world.

I've looked at Forbidden Planet (and been there many times) but never felt brave enough to ask for help with this particular issue, just because they're all a bit scary in there - like I am judged not geeky enough just because I'm wearing pink so they want to ignore me. Might try again if I get no joy elsewhere though, since they are pretty local to me.

Coolstuffinc looks really useful though - at some point over the next few weeks I will put together a list of exactly what I've got and compare it to their prices, and maybe look into auctioning some of the more valuable ones and selling the set of the others. The most annoying this is, I know we had a Mox Pearl (Beta) in our collection - worth $400 - but that was one of the few cards that didn't get left with me :tears:

Beo, I do know what you mean about keeping them, but I've had them sitting on my shelves trying not to gather dust. I promise I'll think about it at least once more before I make any final decisions to sell, ok?

Oh, and andy? A great, recent RPG that I wish I had more time to play is Guild Wars - it's MMO (PvE and PvP), but only in places and very very very shiny. And it only costs as much as the game - it's the only MMORPG I know of that doesn't charge a monthly subscription on top of software price.

I'd forgotten about that! It's sitting in my collection somewhere. I did enjoy it - great visuals and gameplay - but again, the time element comes into it. Added to which, there was no way to make my character jump! I can't relate how much this aggravated me. Although the next instalment may have changed that.

But yeah, you're right, all the other characters got slaughtered. (Usually by some black elf in the party.)

It's now fairly easy to get to 8th, eg beginning warriors can get free armour and healing potions. Archer damage grades nowadays are fairly obsene too eg "8 thru armour"

Party killing's a lot less common thankfully. They basically made a trade-off - Guild benefits (eg the armour and potions) are free to anyone who hasn't party killed.

Precisely why I wanted to check kt - I didn't want to not bring them if anyone was interested in a game, but at the same time I'm trying to figure out whether to bring the whole collection and get some advice on it or just to bring a few decks.

I probably haven't played for about that long as well. Still the whole Interupt occurring on a higher priority queue than Instants with a First In, Last Out order and firing off triggered abilities and such in response to declrations of attack and such are all coming back to me. so did the great Forum Magic the Gathering..erm.. gathering take place then?

Tess and I did. Had two games, the first was a goblin deck against a black deck. I won that one with my goblin deck though Tess seemed to have got a bad hand so it didn't start well for her.

Second game was some white on white action. My bunch of mooks against Tess' cleric deck. She throughly owned that game ending on 100 or so life. I needed creature control.

And great fun it was too - don't think I'll be able to bring myself to actually sell my cards for a while after that, tragic as it might seem! Of course, I've got an excuse in that I probably won't have time to sort out what I have to sell for months and months...

kt, you coming to any other weekenders?

I thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead. I found an online CCG player (err here (http://www.ccgworkshop.com/)). Though it doesn't have Magic: tG it does have some other games like DoomTown (which I played loads), Mythos and Shadowfist all of which I've played in the past. Maybe the geeks on this thread would be interested in meeting up virtually to play some CCGs (though I'm aware that we are playing virtual representations of card games rather than other computer games instead). It's free (for most games anyway) which is a lot cheaper than physically owning the cards ;).

Otherwise my Magic deck is still available for Blaze if others are about :D.

:yeah:
Especially if they can add an 'unfocussed temporal eye' feature (assuming I remembered that quote right)

My head hurts... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cripple_Mr_Onion)

"The Elephants: a player who reveals a set of four cards, each either a nine or ten (or a wild eight), plus the Queen of Coins, may shift points of value between their cards to create a Double Onion, and may consider any other nines or tens in their hands as ones (not aces) and twos respectively. However, any other Double Onion beats this one."
