How very cool.

Here's my result. http://www.speedtest.net/result/41491622.png (http://www.speedtest.net) Now if only I understood it .... :what: Is this good, bad or indifferent?

I'm cheating though. That isn't the home bandwidth.:D

I'm getting 3812 kb/s download, 365 kb/s upload, with a ping time of 76 ms. Oh, and I'm about 350 miles away...

Pretty much what I would expect – my cable modem is capped to 4Mb/s download and 400kb/s upload.

Those numbers are surprisingly low for broadband, or surprisingly high for dial-up.

Not exactly the 8Mbit that I am supposed to have but the uplink is still pretty good. :)

So if it's my bandwidth that's being tested, why do I get consistently different answers from the server in Amsterdam, say, compared to the one in London? If it was just a test of my connection, surely I'd get the same answer from all of them?

I'm on an 8MB Bulldog link. Seems to compare favourably with other home users, but again not as much the 8MB I should be getting.

Because it's a test of the bandwidth between you and the server. The further away it is, the more likely there will be network congestion. Or the server might just be heavily loaded. I found I was getting really poor results from the Liverpool server, despite it being (theoretically) closer to me.

I have done three tests last night, London, Amsterdam and New York. New York came out at pretty much the same value as London, which implies that Plus.net have a fast backbone to North America. And since Amsterdam could only match the uplink speed but reached merely 50% downlink speed, I assume that they have a thin pipe to the continent.

as I've FINALLY been regraded.

I think I'm probably just a "little" to far away from the exchange with really old dodgy phone lines between me and there to get the full 8 meg broadband. Still I would have expected better than that :(

If it was just a test of my connection, surely I'd get the same answer from all of them?:confused:The concept of "your bandwidth" is fairly devoid of meaning until you say your "bandwidth with somewhere". You might be able to ship data at 8MBit/s between you and your phone/ADSL exchange but there's no meaningful data there for you to access at that speed (nor is there an easy way to measure it). So the test measures the speed you can ship data to/from servers in different locations. For nearby servers it's likely that your ADSL line proves to be the most significant bottleneck - but that's clearly not true for servers much farther away.
