Arguably this should be in the "revamp" thread (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8738), but it's my idea so deserves a real thread to die in...

What do people think of the idea of some kind of marketplace function (like a mini-ebay)ww, for forumites to sell / swap stuff in?

I'm thinking mainly dance-y things (DVDs, weekender tickets, that sort of thing), but I guess it doesn't have to be limited to those. Obviously, I dunno how this could best be implemented, but I wondered what people thought about it as a concept...

So - good idea? Bad idea?

Poll?

:innocent:

Not that I ever vote on most of 'em

It could work. The only other forum I read with any regularity is www.ukparents.co.uk, it has several 'buy and sell' boards which are very popular. They have quite strict rules about advertising however. Something for the moderators to consider perhaps?

Would we be allowed to buy (and sell) other Forum members?

Could be a problem, as you'd have to pay people to take some of us...

Fab idea !

I have a pair of dance shoes which I simply can't dance in cos the heels are too high - wanted to be tall and elegant for once  :tears: I want to sell them to someone who would appreciate them (and pay what they are worth)and can't think of a better place to advertise.

I am sure with a "the management accepts no responsibility bla bla bla" statement CEROC Scotland could just let it go ahead ? Hope so :flower:

We could always get together and have a great big car boot sale followed by a party :D and give the profit to charity ???

This sort of thing is pretty well established on one of my other forums where they have a members market place. it's regulated by the visitors with a locked sticky "Bad traders" thread.. i.e. if you do notpay / deliver and item you complain to a moderator who if the problem is not sorted out adds your name to the list of bad traders etc

there's also a thread were members put their paypal details so you just look up their name in the thread and it tells you if they accept paypal , world pay cheques etc etc.

I've bought/sold stuff on there from/to other members with no problems and less of the hassle of putting it on Ebay !

One was actually started off here (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showthread.php?p=201221#post201221) earlier this year but it never did take off.

Scorned by no less than the fabulous, nothing-if-not-inconsistent Mr DavidJames last time, so I see. Who says you have to have new people involved to have the same discussions with different opinions?

Hey, even DJ Mk I didn't say it was a silly idea, just that it might not be viable given the market size. He may be right :)

Many apologies to Ste for stealing his idea - I must have subconsciously retained it as an idea, but thought it was my own

A couple more thoughts:

I think, to be viable, it needs to be a functional section rather than a "For Sale" thread - there's a lot of infrastructure needed for transport, bidding, payment etc., which a normal thread doesn't have.

Also, from a business perspective, I think the only way to make it worthwhile running (given the overheads and the relatively small market size) is for the forum owners to take a reasonable commission - i.e. more than ebay-sized fees (ebay fees listed here (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/fees.html)). How much is a reasonable commission - 10%? 15%?

Next time you're looking at the "photopost" area (http://www.cerocscotland.com/photopost/), take a look at the web site for the company that created that software...
