Over 1,100 dancers [and still counting] are already booked into September at Southport and, sadly for some, we have to announce that we are now only accepting bookings from mixed couples and men only.

Sorry ladies, but next up is Scarborough in November and Southport in February. Not forgetting of course, BIG BANG at the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare in August.

See all again very soon.

I have done that a couple of times, doesn't really work - people don't keep them on

The only thing that really worked, was at MJC last year I gave everyone red sparkly wrist bands so we were all identified (and everyone else was jealous) - they were lovely too

It was great asking a 'wrist wearing person' what's your name on the forum etc ....

xXx:flower:

At Southport the organisers designate a room and a DJ for the forum reception. It usually has occurred on Friday evening and many of the forumites present gather and dance and chat.

It is not an exclusive gathering and anyone can enter and dance and many non forumites do. Although its amusing to see the looks on their faces when they keep getting asked "Who are you on the Forum?" or "whats your forum name?"

For many its a great place to meet old friends but for many its a first opportunity to put faces to all the forum names.

It can be very chaotic meeting so many new faces and names but it should be a great intro to the weekend and is usually followed upwith a BBQ on Saturday and loads and loads of dancing with everyone all weekend.

Not only Southport has had these occasions I am sure someone else will post where else....I know MJC had the wrist bands (thanks Minnie)and other events where many forum members are attending have had name badges.

Hope this helps.

At Southport the organisers designate a room and a DJ for the forum reception. It usually has occurred on Friday evening and many of the forumites present gather and dance and chat..........
It was a good idea but was far too early  who wants to start dancing at 9pm after a 5/6 hour journey and when you want to dance to the early hours :tears:

Note to J & W - can we make the forum meeting start at the earliest at 10pm in September please :D :flower:

It's called the forum reception, but I didn't notice anything which actually made it different from any other time at the weekend. So why does it matter when it is?

I wasn't there (too early) so I'm not sure what happened. In the past we hand out badges or stickers and introduce everyone, so we spend at least 10/15 mins chatting before starting dancing. The very first Southport forum gathering was a bit like that (when Bardsley did the badges), but there were a lot less of us then.

I don't mind doing the badges (have done it a couple of times) but people don't seem to want to wear them ??? In fact in Bognor I even had the avatars on the badges

I've been told though, that if you book with a boy as your dance partner, then there may be a chance???You don't need the man to be your dance partner, its just to even the numbers in the booking. You don't have to do any classes together or anything like that. So as long as its someone you can get on well enough with to share a chalet.

I am in a situation because my partner was going to have some surgery done and that would definately meant that I would not be able to go as I stayed with her to look after her post op. Now we have a new earlier date for the surgery. She will be well on the way to recovery by the time of Southport, so won't need me by her side, but will not be strong enough to tackle a weekender. So now I find myself in the situation of being able to go, but on my own, and there are no single chalets available. I will now have to try to find somone that I can get on with (won't be too hard as I will either be dancing or asleep) to share a room with (before all of those sell out as well).

Having a good time can sometimes not be as simple as one would llike.

We wish your partner a swift recovery Chef.

I think you misunderstand our singles policy which is:

"places for singles are available on a first come first served basis, and will be accommodated in either a Budget 1-bedroom apartment, or sharing a 2-bedroom apartment with another dancer of the same sex, subject to availability".

There is a big difference between sharing a bedroom with someone you don't know and an apartment. At Southport, singles always have their own bedroom but share the other facilities in an apartment.

Hope that is clear.

Currently, we are accepting bookings from men only for September and have about 80 places available.

Many thanks for the promt clarification. I have been contacted by another male and we are currently looking into booking a 2 roomed apartment (two rooms with singles in each) and offering the other two places to ladies that we know.

You say above that you are only accepting bookings from men. Would women be able to book if they were part of a gender balanced group?

Afraid not! As ladies know, we have ALWAYS had a gender balancing policy at Southport, work very hard to maintain it and successfully too. We do this in the very best interests of ladies enjoyment at Southport. If the position was the reverse, we would do the same for men too.

Ladies are always the quickest off the mark so to speak and men, on the whole, play catch-up. Doesn't make it easy for an organiser, and we don't like disappointing anyone.

Ladies [and men] but the former particularly, are already booking in for February & June 2007 to guarantee their places at Southport.

I've only been once, and it wasn't really to my taste. The social dancing was great, the music was fine, but it was the lessons - just found them a bit too large-scale for my taste. It's not that I think the event was in any way bad, more that it doesn't suit me.
If it were closer, we'd very likely pop over to do just the social parts (I assume that's an option) - but it isn't.

Fighting a rearguard action just doesn't seem to be working here   Yeah, sometimes you daren't be even slightly 'not for me' about things on here and you get jumped on! (I know, I was one of those who said about daytime and dancing vs workshops.)

I guess if you want small, focused workshops during the day, with dancing till about 1 or 2am, then Southport - or indeed any of the big weekenders - are not for you. But if you want maximum dancing time to a very good range of music, then Southport offers one of the best weekender options as the DJ line up is superb.

I have just come back from Beach Boogie and believe it or not I DID some classes:clap:

One was Nigle and Nina's performance (I think that's what it was called) I loved it, it wasn't a routine just concentrating on getting cretin moves right, and the class was small enough for them to give you 121 when needed.:respect:

Doning a class with rows of people in a large room with the teacher on stage does nothing for me:sad:

So what weekenders (if any) do you recommend that match what you describe? Rock Bottoms sounds pretty good, but I have yet to get to one (should make Liverpool next year though)

So what weekenders (if any) do you recommend that match what you describe? Rock Bottoms sounds pretty good, but I have yet to get to one (should make Liverpool next year though)I suppose it depends on the teachers available - some of the 'big' weekenders can afford to get teachers that a smaller event can't. But there is always going to be a trade off between quality of learning (not teaching) and class size at weekenders. Though I'm not sure it makes that much of a difference if there are 100 or 500 in a class, in terms of learning (unless there are space/visibility issues), esp if the numbers are relatively even.

I've tended to go for the bigger weekenders - smallest I've been to is about 300 or so and you still don't get the small class size you would be looking for. Sounds like Beach Boogie might have had that though.

Then again if you go to a smaller weekender, you then probably can't get 4 rooms of dance music on at the same time in the evenings (which you can at Southport). For me, having that choice of music and length of freestyle time is the draw.

Workshops - always go with the intention of doing at least 1 or 2, but can't tear myself away from the blues room. :waycool: I am sure I won't do anything different in Septmber.

Better than Camber? Franco's or the Ceroc ones? My biggest hassle with the Camber weekends i've been on is the number of people crammed on the dance floor. It's easier to mosh than Ceroc.

My experience is similar at Francos Camber.

Southport has the blues room which can get very busy at times but there is a bar, loads of seating which doubles as restaurant during day and has a fab outside decking area which can double as dance area when very busy . It also has the main room which is large, always well used but there is always plenty of room to dance. Then there is the Latin Quarter which again is well used but rarely overfull.

The benfit that SP has over Camber and Bognor is that the lay out of the building is such that you walk through a double door from main room to blues room and approx 50 yards across amusement arcade/reception to get to Latin quarter. All rooms are on ground floor and you do not have to go outside to move from room to room and thus no worries about your danceshoes outside

hope this helps!

To add to that, there is a 4th room - which you do have to go outside for but really not far, its the building right beside the main one - which plays music for ballroom dancing (and last time had a little tango music as well).

The blues room can be very busy at times - but as UP says the rooms are so close, the main room is just through swing doors to the blues room - that its no effort to go from room to room.

The blues room is smaller than Camber, but with the extra rooms I think there is more dance space overall.

But Mostlysane, the only way you can find all this out is to come along and see for yourself! :flower:

A couple of points not mentioned above, the location, which means we southerners get to mingle with the fabby dancers from Scotland, Ireland and North of England, we don't see darn sarf, often if at all. The range of superb teachers from outside of MJ - Ballroom, WCS, whatever. The fantastic mix of DJs, drawn from the same areas as the dancers. and the time of year, which means better weather, so you can dance outside on the decking and watch the sun go down - and then come up later and still be dancing!

There's more but I want to highlight the positives of Southport, rather than the negatives of other venues, most of which I have been to.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!

Due to his great success on the US TV show "So You Think You Can
Dance", Benji Schwimmer is unable to make it to Southport next month
(keep an eye out, Jive Addiction will have him in the future!).

Just announced by Jive Addiction today, they have got the equally
amazing Ben Morris and Melina Ramirez from California. Ben & Melina
partnered up in 2003 and have since won many titles together,
including two US Open Young Adult titles in 2003 and 2005. Still
Young Adults (18 and under), Ben & Melina put on amazing
performances and are great to watch on the social dance floor. Ben
is also an established lindy dancer, while Melina has 7 UCWDC
Country Dance World Champion titles to her name.

Ben and Melina are great and their new routine won't disappoint. Also having watched Melina freestyle she is the closest thing you'll see to Tatiana on a social floor. Ben and Melina are a great example of new generation of dancers about to break through into the senior comps. Benn already competes in the seniors for Strictly Swing and Lindy.

I have never seen them teach but if they teach the basics well and encourage people to take up the dance then all well and good. On top of that they have an inspiring routine which helps. It's also great to see the level attained by the teenagers of WCS. One off events always attracts dancers trying out a dance for the first time and with Ben and Melina representing part of the future of WCS I think they will make good embassadors.

I would love to read your feedback after the event on how they did.

OK folks now it is nearly the time - anyone for the Journey picnic and the BBQ by the rocks (as per June)
M6 Junction 14 - STAFFORD approx. 1pm
http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showpost.php?p=230274&postcount=290

It is the one with a Marks & Spencers - Hopefully the weather is good, if not there is a large cafe area

ASA the picnic is concerned, if you could bring a disposable BBQ or some BBQ food - I will do the kitchen stuff. I am sharing with Mrs. McGregor (Sue) Andy can't make it, and 'Jiver' (aka Phil G)

Lory did a list (need a Harper Link) on all the things you need
- take first aid stuff incl. blister plasters and arnica creme and tablets
- dancing clothes (obvious)
- casual stuff for picnic & BBQ
- BBQ stuff (buy it on the journey)
- Sarnies for the picnic(or buy stuff in M&S when you have parked up)
- wine etc.
- tea clothes as well as towels (if you are not in a top chalet)
- umbrella or hoodie or sun creme :D

There is a big Tescos about 3 miles from the camp so if you have forgotten anything you can stock up there

There is a reasonable restraurant there, but it is a lot cheaper to cook and there is a small shop there but it is more expensive (especially bottled water)

and don't forget to bring extra money for new shoes !!!!

Hopefully some kind person will find the link to Lory's list :flower:

Hope to see you at the motorway picnic

whoops - forgot .....
Fancy dress outfit for Saturay night (I think is a Western theme - as in cowboys etc) and something glamerous to change into

If you have an empty car, take what you want - eg: Northants Girly takes her footbath with her
I always keep a rubber shower hose (the one you stick onto the taps) just in case I get a bath only

Bring your own kitchen tools if you intend to do lots of cooking - well at least a small sharpe knife

Lynn

Lory did a list (need a Harper Link) on all the things you need I think it might have been a Camber thread, somewhere, but there is a link from another Southport thread as well. We should copy it into a thread called 'Weekender list' or something so we can find it more easily next time!

and there is a small shop there but it is more expensive (especially bottled water) And not a good range of fruit. We always arrive by train and have no car so are sort of stuck with what is available on site.

and don't forget to bring extra money for new shoes !!!! :yeah: I'm not buying any this time (just bought a new pair last week!) but might be acting as a 'shoe consultant' for friends.

However, I am a little concerned about their teaching capabilities :flower:

These two teach on a regular basis with Ben teaching both WCS and Lindy a couple nights a week. They are also a part of a DVD series that incorporates some of the top WCSers in the US. I'm confident they'll not only do a great job teaching the WCS crowd here in the UK, but also put on an amazing cabaret and be great fun on the social floor. Can't wait for the event and to get a dance with Melina and all the other WCSers that are coming along.

As a well travelled oik from the midlands, may I take this moment in time to suggest that anyone travelling North in the near future i.e. 18-19 days away
avoids the M6 in the Brum area like the plague.

You may be lucky and fly through the road works but my experience would suggest that you are going to have a sore arse from sitting still so long

So, do we think it's going to be doors open and the same open air, chilled dancing option in the blues room as it is in mid-summer. Or is it going to be a more 'cosy' affair :nice:

I really hope it's nice enough for the doors open. That's one of the things that sets it apart for me.

Does anyone believe the 10 day forecasts (when we're within 10 days of course!)

I hope it's gonna be a doors open affair as it gives the blues rooms a really nice atmosphere - not that I spent much time in there but I have promised myself I absolutely must Blues this time around. Hardly done any before - so relying on some nice guys to show me their moves :nice: (no thanks to the guy who bounced me around mad ceroc stylie in the blues room last time - no wonder I didn't stay in there, it was highly embarrassing!)

I really hope it's nice enough for the doors open. That's one of the things that sets it apart for me.This will be my 6th time at Southport and there hasn't yet been a weekend when the doors aren't open for at least part of the day/evening.

Does anyone believe the 10 day forecasts (when we're within 10 days of course!)It depends on who is providing the forecasts. Many of them, no, I wouldn't put too much faith in them. I've actually been looking into a good weather forecast service for our fieldworkers and the one that we are looking at is good, but you have to subscribe to it.

There are so many variables in weather though, that's its hard to be sure.

There's no Sunday-lush this month, but I will be spending the time putting some truly lushious Southport sets together for the Latin, Blues, Jive and Tango rooms.
Next opportunity to get your FunkyLush fix is the FL dance party on Sat 23 Sept, then another FL dance party on Sat 28th Oct.

Having a specific 'discipline' for a room seems a bit OTT given the very small percentage of people who actually do Tango.

The Southport Dance Den is being set aside for various amounts of disciplining:eek: throughout the weekend. From 9.30-11pm on Friday night it is dedicated to "Mainly Tango with DJ Kenobe" (at other times/days DD and Roger have Ballroom Latin sets and Marc a Tango/Milonga set). If enough people are interested I can start earlier - at maybe 9pm to give Tango lovers a full 2 hour fix - of course you'd be missing Lampert in the Blues room  - any takers???

I've never been to Southport for a dance weekender, but what is the cheapest ticket you can get?

That depends when you book. For example, if you are attending Southport next week [15-18 September] you can get a "ticket" for the February [02-05] weekend for only £69 sharing budget accommodation. At Southport you're not crammed in to an apartment either and, all car parking is absolutely FREE!
