Can someone tell me what the tea dance is like on the HMS President? I'm staying over on Sunday night after hammersmith and was wondering whether it was worth checking out the tea dance.

What are numbers like/Atmosphere etc..

Hey, I'm in exactly the same situation!

I'm in London the day after hammersmith, and was wondering what was on

Do tell guys.... I've never been before... is it like Funky Lush? :na:

Paul L may not agree its like funky lush !. Its main stream music some tunes that have a bouncy feel. They have been talking of closing this 'fixed venue' for years but it continues.

I have a good time when im on the boat

It will probably be crowded

400/500 people with cakes and coffe (free)

well worth a visit :yeah:

I think i just may pop down :) hehehe.

I have a london - Admit one pass. Would that work on the HMS President freestyle?

The emphasis is on socialising!!!

There are lot's of lovely cakes and tea and coffee in abundance. ~This all takes place in a separate room from the dancing and has a relaxed and friendly feel about it.

If the weather's nice, you can wander outside and even dance on the deck, which is lovely. The views down the river are great.

The dance room/hall isn't very big and can get very crowded, (drops would be a BAD idea) the floor is a bit odd too, being a boat it curves down at the edges. I suggest taking a couple of different shoes with you, I went once and it was VEERY slow and another time and it was fast.

There's usually a 'fun' class to start.

I won't be there myself but you'll have fun, especially if you don't expect the usual dance format!

It is absolutely nothing like Funky Lush!

Youre on a Boat with loads of people trying dance, but not noticing the crowd around them! Music is your standard ceroc stuff. It couldnt be more different to Funky lush!

Hi Bobby/Marty,
I've been only once to HMS President and had a lovely time.

Class on that ocassion was taught by Simon Borland and he adjusted it, from the demo, to suit the abilities of the people there. It was busy, but there was room to dance and I did have a few dances on the deck outside. Erick was on the decks  and the music was great!

I went along on my own, meeting Lory later on  and was made to feel very welcome and got asked to dance a lot. I'd definitely recommend it.

I used to go regularly when I first started dancing, in the days when Mike Ellard :respect: did the teaching

If you have never been, it is well worth a visit, especially if the weather is good - remember it is £10 this bank hols though.

Whats the parking like really tho?
Its going to be a Bank hol monday!

My Hotel is actually just up the road from the Palais... Would it be alot more hassle free to simply tube it there, and back for the car???

Martin :na:

PS:
I'd love to do Funky Lush in Hammersmith later that day... but realistically need to be heading off home by that time!

I love the President.

I will be there on Monday, Marc is teaching on Monday so the lovely Rachel will be there, along with a few forumites

We normally go for a drink afterwards in the walkabout bar which has a live band on and room for more dancing.

The doors open at 12 this monday for chatting etc and the classes start around 2-30

Hope to see some of you there :D

Im guessing you mean me

and, no. Its nothing like funky lush.

Well, i have to say what i think about it now

Im going to be rather more diplomatic than last time. It is definately a venue where, if i were ever to go again, I would go to socialise rather than dance.

The atmosphere is good because lots of people know each other and can sit chatting. The bar sells tea and things which is nice. The other plus side is the novelty of it.

The bits i didnt like too much were the dancfloor (not finished well for a dancefloor), the floor in the bar/outside made my shoes useless for dancing, it was packed and its a small dancefloor (pics are flattering to say the least) - difficult to actually dance - oh and it is domed, the music was not music i like but thats totally subjective - others may love it, it took me bloody ages to get to (again not same for everyone), it was really hot as the dancefloor is housed in a low ceiling cabin type thing.

Its horses for courses at the end of the day. Its not my cup of tea but you may love it. I say go for it. What have you got to lose?

I agree, it's lovely in the summer to sit and catch up with people but also have a little dance now and then

:yeah: but ........... if you have never been before it is a MUST ! You can then make your own opinion

I always enjoy the President, but more for a social than the dancing :flower:

:yeah: to both above.

Go along, have a chat and maybe a dance now and again. See what you think.
It is good for the novelty of it too.

I've only been a couple of times, and agree with all that's been said already. Its a really nice afternoon of socialising, drinking tea and eating cake, with the occassional dance on an overcrowded and bad dancefloor. Don't let the quality of the dance floor or lack of space put you off though, its such a great atmosphere, and sometimes they even lay on proper food (pasta, salad etc.) too, all included in the entry fee. If the weather's good, its even better!

Oh, and parking is never a problem round there, not on a Sunday or a Bank Holiday. No Congestion charge, no parking fees, and loads of parking within very short walkable distances, if not right outside.

Looks like HMS is a possiblity this Mon then! :na:

I'll probably be pretty wiped out from the night before, so it would be nice to just chill out on top deck in the Sunshine. (Just checked the weather tho - London is suppose to be Rainy on Monday - hope thats wrong!)

Thanks for the heads up tiggs - If I do go... I reckon I'll drive in as well :D I checked the Tubes (Hey, I'm not a local... ) 30mins to get from Hammersmith to Embankment. Please... I'm much rather get hopelessly lost, and all stressed about parking etc

Tempel (nearest station to the boat) is usually closed on sunday so assume will be also closed on a bank holiday

so its a good 10 min walk from Embankment (9th boat on the right, roughly)

or 7 mins from Blackfriars ?

Hey hey, Someone else who is willing to admit not fancying London inner City traffic on a Bank Hol! :na:

Cool!... Bobby, is your brother coming along along as well? What time do you think you will be tubing it? You got my number, give me a buzz, and maybe we can all go down together? :nice:

I'm aiming for a late night Sunday, get up...late... on Mon, do a Breakfast/Lunch... THEN saudering down for the Tea dance. Realistically, there is no chance of getting an easy early bird parking space I reckon....

Cheers
Martin
